Slovenia is one of the most underrated places to visit in Europe, sandwiched between Croatia and the Balkans this destination really wows with its alpine scenery, turquoise lakes, fairy-tale castles and old towns as I found out on my week-long venture!
After dozens of trips to Croatia, I’d decided to branch out to neighbouring Slovenia, and I was blown away by this small country. It has managed to pack in an incredible amount of beauty into a very compact space and this trip turned out to be one of my favourite travel experiences.
You can easily spend a week getting to know the highlights, such as Ljubljana, Piran and Lake Bled, not to mention all the in-between castles and mountains and getting around is super easy by rail, so if you’re planning a trip to Slovenia this summer, here are the places I’d visit, plus tips I learned along the way!

WHAT TO SEE IN SLOVENIA: BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT!
A week hardly seems long enough to visit a whole country, but with the short distances, where talking 30 minutes between sights, Slovenia makes it easy to hop from one place to another!
So from Ljubljana and its incredible old town to the serene shores of Lake Bled, I’m sharing the best places to visit in Slovenia, including lakes, charming cities and coastal towns, plus the top things to see in Slovenia for a perfect summer trip!
LJUBLJANA
Ljubljana is Slovenia’s award-winning green capital with an irresistible blend of charming old town cobbled lanes, elegant bridges and lively riverside cafés. It’s a beautiful place to start exploring Slovenia – and exactly where my own trip began!
I started my week-long trip in the picturesque old town, following a scenic train journey from Zagreb in Croatia to Ljubljana, and I was blown away when I laid eyes on the gorgeous pastel buildings, greenery and river that flows through the core of the town – just minutes from leaving the train station!
And, staying in a boutique hotel in the oldest and most attractive part of town makes your visit even more magical in Ljubljana! You’ll be a stone’s throw from the best sights, including the 16th-century hill-top Ljubljana Castle, the triple bridge and sunny riverside restaurants.
Ljubljana makes for a vibrant and friendly base – I highly recommend stopping for three days to absorb it all and get acquainted with all things Slovenian, including the lovely white wine and rich food, from Italian influence to Balkan potatoes!
Where To Stay In Ljubljana Slovenia
If you’re staying two or three nights, Heritage Hotel Ljubljana is a beautiful boutique option right in the old town with elegant rooms and an unbeatable location for exploring the city.

LAKE BLED
Lake Bled is arguably the star attraction of Slovenia, when I arrived, I could see why, it’s beautiful and a photographer’s dream with incredible mountainous landscape and chocolate box houses in every direction you look!
Unbelievably Lake Bled is only 40 minutes on the train from Ljubljana, which makes it popular for day trippers, but I definitely recommend staying longer than a day, this is one of the best places to visit in Slovenia for stunning scenery, and the Alpine-style hotels are gorgeous!
You can walk all the way around the lake, stopping to admire the majestic church in the middle at different angles or even canoe around it and in summer, the banks of the lake turn into cool sunbathing spots with plenty of options to lunch by the waters edge – where I spent a lot of hours!
As well as gawping at the landscape and joining walking trails, one of the must-dos is hiking up to Bled Castle for panoramic views and having a slice of traditional Bled cream cake – it’s famous in this area!
Where To Stay In Lake Bled Slovenia
Lake Bled has charming Alpine-style accommodation, and Villa Pomona is one of the most attractive places to stay (at least three nights), with elegant rooms and a pool for hot summer days. It’s the perfect base!

TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK & LAKE BOHINJ
Triglav National Park is the heart of the Julian Alps and is a scenic area of Slovenia with beautiful views and unmissable experiences and the best things is it’s only a 30 minute drive away from Lake Bled!
While Lake Bled is in my opinion the best place to visit in Slovenia, this national park offers access to a quieter environment with natural waterfalls, gorges and stunning Lake Bohinj, making it a perfect day trip, where you’ll hardly see any other tourists, even in the peak summer months, it’s so vast!
You can also try your hand at hiking Vintar Gorge for stunning views (one of the top things to see in Slovenia), paddleboarding or bike riding around the lake’s chalk-paths – these are just some of the active (and fun) ways to spend your time in Slovenia’s alpine countryside.
It’s a great location to explore if you have your own car and if you don’t, I highly recommend this easy organised day trip from Lake Bled, which is the next best option to see the highlights – public transport is a no-go for this enormous area!

PIRAN
Piran is a pretty coastal town with a totally different vibe from Ljubljana and definitely Lake Bled, this small laid back heritage town on the seafront is much more similar to the Croatian coastline, especially Trogir, where the orange rooftops meet the deep blue sea!
Piran still feels like a hidden gem and all the better for it, you can easily spend a day or two here wandering around the narrow lanes of the old town, strolling the prom and soaking up the atmosphere in the beautiful Tartini Square – which wouldn’t look out of place in Venice!
Speaking of which, Venice is only across the water, four hours away, which explains all the Italian restaurants and extra friendly wait staff – I told you the vibe was different here and there’s rows of beautiful Venetian Gothic Architecture to admire – some of these are wonderful boutique hotels!
Piran is one of the best places to visit in Slovenia for Adriatic views and to see the best panorama I highly recommend walking along the old town wall – then you can relax with a Gelato along the rocky shoreline!
Where To Stay in Piran Slovenia
For overnight stays, Hotel Piran is a beautiful boutique option right on the seafront with spacious rooms, fantastic breakfast and an unbeatable location for exploring this pretty coastal heritage town.

POSTOJNA CAVE & PREDJAMA CASTLE
Postojna Cave is the second largest cave in Europe and well worth a day trip! Once inside the cave, you’ll see why, there are all sorts of incredible rock formations to admire, and you’ll pass them all on a guided underground open-air train – it’s spectacular!
And just a 30-minute scenic drive away, there’s one of the other wonders of Slovenia, the castle built into a cliff face known as Predjama Castle – a former hideout for Robin Hood-type characters and typically there’s plenty of scenic views and photo ops along the way!
Most visitors drive from Ljubljana to see both sights in one day, as they are so close to each other, you can even get a shuttle between the two, which works well if you are travelling by train, I personally took a day trip as the overall journey time was quicker!
