WHERE TO STAY IN TULUM – OVERVIEW
If you’re in the midst of planning your trip and are wondering where to stay in Tulum, let me explain, as it can be confusing if you’re not familiar with the unique layout and the location of your hotel can totally shape your experience, especially if it’s your first time visiting!
Tulum covers a large part of the Yucatán Peninsula, and is roughly divided into two areas: Tulum Beach (the quintessential area) and Tulum Town with a few neighbourhoods in between, all of which offer a totally different vibe!
To give you an idea of the scale, the beach alone is 6-miles long, stretching from the North by the ruins to the bohemian South near Sian Kaan Biosphere reserve – and it will literally take you all day to walk from Tulum South Beach to Tulum Town!
For me the beach is ideal for couples, solo travellers or anyone who wants to be in the middle of everything – or if you want to make the most of your time, I’ve outlined the best areas to stay in Tulum, plus my favourite hotels below!
Best Areas In Tulum Mexico – At A Glance
Tulum Beach
The beach is by far the best area to stay in Tulum for first-time visitors to experience the real ambience of Tulum – the luxurious beach clubs, stunning boutique hotels (you won’t find big beachfront hotels here), beautiful restaurants, nightlife and more!
Tulum Town
Tulum’s Town or Tulum Pueblo, is the main local area with some nightlife, cafes and sun-bleached buildings surrounded by jungle (the best hotels are in the jungle part of town) – it’s 30-minute cycle to Beach Road.
Veleta
Veleta is a new neighbourhood, set in the jungle, more remote with a cool hippy vibe and a handful of social hangout spots – a digital nomad area, furthest from the beach.
Aldea Zama
Aldea Zama is set between the town and the beach, a developing upmarket area with lots of apartments and long-stay condos, quiet and modern vibe, stylish restaurants and terraces.
Tanka Bay
Tanka Bay is located in a quiet area beyond the Tulum Ruins, perfect for a relaxing stay, luxury hotels, larger pools and ideal for romantic couples and privacy.
BEST AREAS TO STAY IN TULUM MEXICO
TULUM MIDDLE BEACH

Tulum Middle Beach is the main area of Tulum and most sought-after spot on the beach, it’s ideal if you want to be close to the most stylish beach clubs, restaurants, best boutique hotels (iconic thatched roofs, cool sculptures) and a lively hipster atmosphere!
As a result of all the fancy boutiques and amenities, it is the priciest area, but what you get is an unbeatable location and convenience, you’re steps away from everything without the need for extra taxis, etc.
This area of Tulum is especially popular with first-time visitors, couples and social travellers who appreciate luxurious boutique stays and dreamy beachfront terraces with bags of personality, the vibe here is magnetic!
Where to stay In Tulum Middle Beach, top hotel picks:
Hotel Maxan’ab
Located in one of the best areas to stay in Tulum, boutique Hotel Maxan’ab sits right on the beach front, boasting spacious ocean view suites, a private beach club and an infinity pool – the setting is dreamy! Definitely one of the most attractive 5-star hotels in Tulum Mexico – if it’s available book it!
Check availability at Hotel Maxan’ab
Ahau Tulum
Set right on the sand with a relaxed vibe, Ahau Tulum is known for its fantastic location and cool, organic design. This hotel is the best place to stay in Tulum if you want a little atmosphere, that true Tulum design (with iconic sculptures!), smoothie bowls on tap and direct access to the sand!

TULUM SOUTH BEACH

Tulum South Beach is the best area to stay in Tulum for quiet luxury. It’s the most desirable place to escape to for those looking for that true boho-lux barefoot Tulum vibe – hammocks between palm trees and cool rustic decor!
From personal experience, this area of Tulum is the perfect spot if you’re visiting in high season. You can enjoy a quieter, relaxing day on the widest and most beautiful part of the white sand beach and head to other places for livelier nights out (if desired)!
Not only is South Beach lined with yoga studios, juice bars, like the infamous Mama Matcha, cool boutique stores, but you’ll also find some of the best vibey jungle restaurants in Tulum here, such as stunning NU!
Where to stay in Tulum South Beach, my favourite hotels:
La Valise
A classic on South Beach, La Valise Tulum is a true Tulum boutique that blends boho-chic with intimate luxury. It offers iconic ocean-facing suites with private plunge pools and curated interiors that feel like your dream Tulum escape – perfect for couples or anyone looking for a stylish beach stay.

TULUM NORTH BEACH

Tucked away from Tulum’s bustling Hotel Zone, Tulum’s North Beach is a total haven and best area to stay in Tulum for those seeking a peaceful escape away from nightlife and crowds!
North Beach is also the newly formed Jaguar National Park, which includes Mayan Ruins and the three beach coves Playa Paraiso, Tulum Ruinas and Las Palmas, it offers natural beauty, clear sea and craggy rocks – you can hear the birds tweet here!
As this area is now a national park and there is a fee to access, there are fewer hotels and restaurants (except for the hotel’s own) and the accommodation is more private; it’s ideal if you plan on staying at your resort more and using the on-site facilities – you get the park included!
For peace and quiet and exploring the ruins and national park beaches this area is perfect and you can easily cycle to the South Beaches in 10-15 minutes along the beach road.
Where to stay in Tulum North Beach, standout hotels include:
Mezzanine
Perched on the rocky North Bay with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea, Mezzanine Tulum is a chic adults-only boutique escape designed for couples and style-seekers. Its intimate atmosphere, Balinese-inspired décor and stunning sunsets, I recommend it for romantic getaways!

TULUM TOWN

Tulum Town (aka Tulum Pueblo) is the best suited for those looking for an affordable boutique, or you could splash out on a luxury hotel in the jungle for a fraction of the cost of those on the beachfront!
Downtown Tulum is utterly different from the Hotel Zone, and definitely has a lived-in local vibe with taco stands, sun-bleached buildings, day-to-day shops and some souvenir stalls, there’s not much boho Tulum style or even holiday atmosphere here, except for a handful of funky bars (infamous Mojito bar), it’s not my favourite.
But as the town expands there are now several stunning luxury hotels with pools situated on the outskirts of Tulum Town within the peaceful jungle area, which truly reflect the Tulum style. This would be a great option if you don’t mind being a little remote or cycling 30-minutes to reach the beach!
Where to stay in Tulum Town, my top hotel picks:
Akra Tulum
Akra Tulum is a brand new luxury hotel in Tulum Pueblo with spacious and stylish rooms for adults only all centred around lush tropical gardens and a pool. It’s one of the best places to stay in Tulum Town for couples, near attractions – but with luxury jungle atmosphere!

Hotel Bardo
One of the most sought-after boutique hotels in Tulum Town, Hotel Bardo is known for its lush courtyard, private plunge pools and refined, adults-only atmosphere. It’s perfect for indulgent couples or for anyone wanting boutique luxury without staying on the beach.

Una Vida
Creative, colourful and full of character, Una Vida Tulum blends rustic bohemian design with a laid-back, social vibe. Expect unique rooms, a tranquil restaurant scene and great value for money – ideal if you want a stylish base in Tulum Town that still feels intimate, relaxed and welcoming.

Zenses Wellness & Yoga
Tucked away in a quiet corner of Tulum Town, Zenses Hotel is small adults-only wellness retreat with a jungle feel, pool, rooftop yoga and stylish suites. It’s ideal if you want to stay close to town without the noise – I stopped for a week and would recommend it if you just need a handy base – but wouldn’t choose it over a beach stay!
Looking to stay in Tulum Pueblo?
If you’re leaning towards a more affordable, foodie-friendly base, Tulum Town has some beautiful boutique stays too. I’ve rounded up my favourites in a dedicated guide:

ALDEA ZAMA

Nestled between Tulum’s town centre (Pueblo) and the white-sand beaches, Aldea Zama is one of the best areas in Tulum for longer stays and is suited for those looking for an affordable apartment or cool condo, ex-pats love it!
This brand-new suburb offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by jungle greens and contemporary architecture – a real highlight for me was discovering the boutique shops and cafes, such as the lush Alma Verde brunch spot and garden!
Aldea Zama is perfect for travellers who seek privacy, but still want convenient access to some of the best things to do in Tulum – you can easily cycle to the beach (via the main road Av. Coba, which meets the Beach Road) in 15-minutes!
(The only thing to note is that this area is still under development, so noise in the daytime might occur).
Where to stay in Aldea Zama, my top hotel picks:
Kimpton Aluna Resort
Kimpton Aluna Resort is a luxurious hotel with two pools and a beautiful boho-lux restaurant and terrace. It’s situated close to the beach and near the upmarket Hunab Lifestyle Centre – my go-to brunch spot in Tulum, it’s perfect for couples and quiet luxury seekers!
Check availability at Kimpton Aluna Resort
Secrets Resort
Secrets is the only adults-only all-inclusive Tulum resort located within the jungle of Aldea Zama and has everything you would want for a relaxing 5-star stay. It’s the largest resort in all of Tulum (300 rooms) – you will want for nothing at this hotel!
View availability at Secrets Resort
Copal Tulum
Copal Tulum is both a hotel and apartment; it’s one of the best places in Tulum for families wanting more space and privacy while being a stone’s throw from the attractions and beach in Tulum. The outdoor pool area is beautiful!
See rooms & rates at Copal Tulum
LA VELETA

La Veleta is the best area to stay in Tulum for those looking to stay well away from the mainstream tourism of Beach Road – the vibe here is more low-key and hipster with coffee hangs, galleries and sociable terraces!
While there are plenty of apartments that are popular with the digital nomad crowd (mainly North Americans) who stay here for weeks at a time, there are also some luxury hidden gems – brand new hotels if you’re seeking a luxurious holiday vibe and jungle setting – a pool is essential in this area of Tulum!
You will need transport to get around and some of the streets are remote and rugged, due to the jungle location and newness, but there is a brand new road Avenida Kukulkan, which connects La Veleta to the Middle of Beach Road – 10-minutes via car!
Where to stay in La Veleta, standout hotels include:
Hotel Milam
A stunning NEW adults-only boutique in La Veleta, Hotel Milam is all about creative boho design and relaxed luxury. With elegant suites, a serene pool area and a peaceful atmosphere, it’s a great choice for couples who want a refined stay away from the busier beach zones (one of my new favourites)!
Check availability at Hotel Milam
Hotel Muare
Surrounded by jungle greenery, Hotel Muare Tulum feels like a hidden retreat in La Veleta. The luxury hotel is known for its spacious suites, private plunge pools and tranquil, design-forward setting – ideal if you’re looking for a quiet, boutique stay with a hint of seclusion.

Kan Tulum Hotel
Uniquely Tulum-designed, Kan Tulum Hotel offers a peaceful base in La Veleta with a strong focus on sustainability and slow living. Expect natural materials and a relaxed vibe that suits travellers who want simplicity, style and a calmer side of Tulum.
See availability at Kan Tulum Hotel
TANKAH BAY

Tankah Bay and a little further up the coast Soliman Bay, are a well-kept secret of Tulum (for now) and remain untouched from heavy development – you’ll find pristine white sand and coral reefs to snorkel!
It’s 15 minutes from the Hotel Zone by car, and this area has just a few boutique hotels on the beach (nothing else!). Although the beach is officially public, it’s designed so that nobody can find it, thus remaining tranquil with few visitors!
Soliman Bay on the other hand is well guarded and totally private, the only sunbathers are guests of the luxury hotel Jashita, both spots are perfect places to stay in Tulum to escape the crowds!
Where to stay in Tankah Bay, my favourite hotels include:
Jashita Hotel
Set on the calm, turquoise waters of Soliman Bay, 5-star Jashita Hotel is a gorgeous, adults-friendly boutique known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful sea-facing suites. With a private beach, exceptional service and a peaceful, romantic feel, it’s the ideal place to stay in Tulum for quiet luxury seekers!

WHERE TO STAY IN TULUM – INSIDER TIPS!
When To Visit Tulum
Tulum is hot all year round, but there are two distinct seasons – wet or dry! The main time to visit is between November to March, it’s perfect sunbathing weather, and it avoids the rainy months and seaweed between late April and October.
(I visited at the end of February, and it wasn’t overly busy; the peak tourist months are November to January!)
How Many Days In Tulum
I recommend staying in Tulum for a minimum of 5 nights to soak up that Tulum vibe and see the sights, longer of course if you are travelling from Europe or want a relaxing beach break! If you’re looking for that quintessential barefoot beachfront escape, 7-10 nights is ideal!
Best Time To Book
Book early! I recommend booking at least 4-6 months in advance as Tulum, especially the boutique beachfront hotels that are popular sell out fast – some only have a dozen or so suites! So if you have your eye on something, secure it today!
Know What To Expect
Luxury hotels in Tulum do not look like your typical 5-star hotel; you can expect cool designs, rustic looks and natural materials, such as thatched ceilings that blend harmoniously into the jungle backdrop. All the beachfront properties are low-rise (two-story bungalows at the most!)
How To Get Around Tulum
If you’re staying in Tulum Town, Veleta or Aldea Zama, you’ll need transport to access the main Tulum attractions, these areas are the furthest away from the beach – approximately 20-30 minutes bike ride or 5-10 minute taxi.
Hiring a bike is popular and cycling along the Beach Road, aka the ‘Hotel Zone’ is one of the best things to do in Tulum – but only in the daytime!
Taxi’s are plentiful but also expensive. A short journey, for example, from Tulum Town to the Hotel Zone is €30 one way.
For stays at the beachfront, you will only really need transport to see the Tulum Ruins, as you are already in the best spot, especially Middle Beach, the most central beach area!
In the evenings, use taxis to get to and from nightlife spots, (further away from your hotel) as walking/cycling in the dark is not safe.
