Why stay on the beachfront?
Without a doubt the beachfront is the ultimate location in Tulum, if you stay in this spot you’ll be near all the very best restaurants, nightlife, spas, yoga and fantastic boutique shops. Almost all of the photogenic places that are advertised for Tulum can be found in what’s known as ‘the hotel zone’ and dusty Beach Road. It’s absolutely ideal if you have a good budget and plan on spending more time relaxing and dining with your feet in the sand!
How to choose a beach hotel in Tulum?
How to choose between ALL the beautiful beach hotels in Tulum? Well, one thing to note is that even an 3 or 4 star hotel will be on the pricier side and the look and feel of a five-star hotel might appear rustic, but that’s the style and part of the boho vibe in Tulum. Often the natural materials blend in with the jungle backdrop and by law, there are zero high rises like you see in the rest of the Yutacan Penisula coastline.
So this narrows your options down to facilities and preferences, think about the type of trip your are after for example is relaxation and a spa important? Chance to do a spot of yoga with a sea view? Below I’ve highlighted the top beach hotels in Tulum that cover this and more!
Good To Know:
There are roughly four areas of the beach offering different experiences:
- North Beach (quiet, relaxation, near the ruins)
- Public Beach (affordable area, near the ruins & Av.Coba)
- Middle Beach (restaurants, beach clubs, nightlife)
- South Beach (romantic, yoga, near Sian Ka’an)
Note: unless you are staying at one of the beach hotels in Tulum within the private beach area you will be charged around $40-70 to hire a sunbed – another reason to stay at the beachfront for a few days!

TIPS FOR BOOKING A BEACH HOTEL IN TULUM
Here are a few tips worth knowing before you book your trip to Tulum!
BOOK EARLY
Hotels in Tulum Pueblo fill up fast! To secure the best price and availability, book at least 6 months in advance, especially in peak season late November until early February.
WHEN TO VISIT
Tulum is an all-year destination, however, the wettest months are June, September and October and the best months are November then mid-February until March. I visited in early February and found that the temperature was perfect and it wasn’t over-crowded at all.
BRING CASH
The currency in Tulum is Mexican Pesos, but most places accept US Dollars. Cash is best for smaller local cafés and eateries around Tulum Pueblo, taxis, buses and entrance fees and also for hotel bills – if you pay on your card you will be subject to all kinds of extra fees including unfavourable hotel exchange rates!
HOTEL EXPECTATIONS
Luxury hotels in Tulum Pueblo are not your typical hotel, they are more rustic looking with an eco-feel and blend in perfectly with the jungle environment – a complete contrast to the large white-washed resorts found further along the coast.
OTHER ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN TULUM
While Tulum’s beaches are undoubtedly the main attraction, there’s more to explore nearby and beyond, from ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea to the natural crystal clear water cenotes “sink holes” below the ground unique to Mexico, not to mention the iconic sculptures and fascinating ritual experiences.
Take a look a The Complete Guide To Tulum for the unmissable highlights.

Tulum offers a paradise-like setting with some of the best beach hotels in the world! Explore every inch of the beach, beautiful restaurants, beach clubs and the wellness ventures of this stunning destination, you could easily spend a week without ever leaving the beachfront and soak up the Tulum vibe.
