Split is a vibrant coastal city, just bursting with historic charm and beauty, and there are tonnes of things to do in Split to keep your interest for a few days, from sipping wine along the Riva to exploring cosy cobbled lanes and sunset viewpoints!
Croatia is my favourite country to explore in Europe, and I’ve spent many summers island-hopping from Split, it’s an incredible base, but more than that, a beautiful place in its own right, there are many attractions in the UNESCO old town and gems nearby that warrant an overnight stay – or longer!
I’ve invested hours exploring the palm-tree-lined Riva and wandering the labyrinth of cobbled streets in Diocletian’s Palace, but there’s definitely more beneath the surface, you’ll want to get to know the wine tasting spots, heritage sights, waterfront gems and nearby islands!
So, if you’re in the midst of planning your trip to Split, here’s the best things to do in Split, plus insider tips you don’t want to miss!
Top Hotel Picks For Split:
Planning your trip? Here’s my top hotel picks!
- Hotel Ambasador Split – top hotel, rooftop pool & epic Riviera views!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN SPLIT CROATIA
1. EXPLORE DIOCLETIANS PALACE (Top things to do in Split)
You have probably already heard about Split’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site Diocletian’s Palace, it’s the heart and soul of the city, and one of the best things to explore in Split! You can actually walk through this Palace ruin and discover charming restaurants, boutique shops, and several fantastic historic hotels, it’s certainly been developed over the years into something totally unique!
Diocletian’s Palace is one of the most visited sights in Croatia, where you’ll see ancient columns and arches of the Peristyle (main square) and underneath a huge kind of creepy basement structure, some of which is used as a local souvenir shopping area, and parts of it were also featured in Game of Thrones, just like in Dubrovnik Old Town!
The Palace is of course the busiest spot in the whole of Split, especially in the afternoons when the day trippers descend, so I recommend visiting in the morning for a crowd-free experience, but don’t forget to stroll through at nighttime when the atmosphere really ramps up!

Short on time? If you’re visiting for the first time, jump to my 3-day Split itinerary or see where to stay in Split for the best locations.
2. WANDER SPLIT OLD TOWN LANES (My favourite things to do in Split Croatia)
Split Old Town is completely car-free and wonderful to walk around, and one of my favourite things to do in Split is get lost amongst the shiny old town lanes, the most charming and maze-like part of the city, and it’s where you’ll discover the best kept secrets!
Beyond the palace, there are lots of narrow cobbled lanes with towering traditional stone buildings and green shutters, where you can find cute cafes, wine bars and local restaurants – such as historic Uje oil bar, the best spot in town for a class of wine and tapas!
You will get to know the lanes really well by the end of your stay, and it’s a good idea to visit at different times of day, especially at night, when sightseeing gives way to romance, lantern-lit streets, and more doors opening, revealing gems like Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar- a must-visit!
If you’re planning to spend a few nights here, I’ve rounded up the best boutique hotels and places to stay in Split Old Town in my accommodation guide.

3. EXPLORE SPLIT’S CATHEDRAL & CLIMB THE BELL TOWER
Split’s old town is absolutely layered with history and landmarks, and none is more prominent than the cathedral and bell tower that leans over the entire town. It’s the tallest structure in the historic square and a must-visit!
Climbing up to the top of the bell tower is the best part of the cathedral, you get to see a wonderful panoramic view over the palace and orange rooftops across the town, probably even better than the official Marjan Hill viewpoint, but the stairs are totally rickety and spiralled, so watch your step!
If you want to know more about the history of Split’s main historic sights, I recommend a short guided walking tour through the old town, it’s especially good for first-time visitors, a guide really brings it all to life!
4. STROLL ALONG THE RIVA PROMENADE
Strolling along the vibrant Riva is one of my favourite things to do in Split at any time of the day, I love the vibe and Mediterranean aesthetics, and it’s located right in front of Diocletian’s Palace, so you can easily wander from one to the other when exploring the old town.
Split’s waterfront is really one of the most beautiful in Croatia, similar to Trogir or Hvar Town, where you’ll find rows of palm trees, stunning Venetian buildings, inviting restaurant terraces and a harbour full of boats, its a great spot for morning coffee or sunset cocktails!
You will love this area of Split, it always has a good vibe about it, but the best place to enjoy it all is from the Olive Tree terrace right in the middle with a perfect sea view, it’s by far the ideal location for sipping Aperol Spritz and watching the Riva bustle, even locals do it!

5. WALK UP TO MARJAN HILL VIEWPOINT (unique things to do in Split Croatia!)
Marjan Hill is another fantastic sightseeing spot situated at the end of the Riva and Republic Square, which boasts the best panoramic view of the old town and waterfront, but don’t worry, the walk is not as far as it looks, it takes around 15 minutes!
And it’s even easier to locate, you just follow the Marjan Hill signpost, and there’s only one set of stairs to navigate, which leads you past a few traditional stone houses, and then it’s nature all the way to the top, where you’ll get a sweeping view right across the city!
Arriving in time for the sunset is one of the most popular things to do in Split, which I haven’t done yet, but I have sat on the Vilidica terrace with a drink and I’ve stayed at the best hotel in town Hotel Ambasador right below Marjan Hill, where you get an equally good view from the rooftop!

6. STAY IN A BEAUTIFUL BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN SPLIT OLD TOWN
One of the things I love most about Split Old Town is the atmosphere, which you get to appreciate even more if you stay in a beautiful boutique hotel, the setting is just magical, once there, you will agree with me!
I’ve stopped here more than anywhere else, it’s super convenient, utterly charming and close to all the best attractions and transport, plus you’ll get to enjoy a private breakfast on a pretty square or rooftop every morning!
For me, the best boutique hotels are Judita Palace Hotel set within Diocletian’s Palace and Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia, where I stopped last, a super hotel, situated on the best looking square with a lovely rooftop!

7. VISIT THE GOLDEN GATE & GREGORIOUS OF NIN STATUE
The Golden Gate marks one of the main entry points to Diocletian’s Palace. It makes for a great photo op, with not too many people in the background (except for a couple of Roman soldier stand-ins), and from this spot, you can also see the ancient walls much more clearly!
Right by the entrance, you’ll also come across the huge Gregorious of Nin statue, which is said to be a hero of Croatia and a good luck symbol, I’m not sure how much of this is true, but if you rub the toe, which is already bright gold from previous visitors, it will make you return and bring you luck!
8. SPEND AN ATMOSPHERIC EVENING AT THE PERISTYLE
An evening at the peristyle listening to acoustic music and sipping wine in Diocletian’s Palace is a fantastic and totally unique experience, the atmosphere alone really draws you in, it’s one of the best things to do in Split at night!
I especially love seeing the columns lit up and sitting on the little red cushions, with makeshift tables dotted around the stone steps, it’s really impressive and you also get table service from restaurant Lvxor, so you don’t even have to move!
9. HAVE BREAKFAST AT BRASSERIE NO 7
If you’re on the lookout for a good brunch place, you are going to love Bistro No 7, it’s hands down the best breakfast spot right along the most attractive part of the Riva among the Venetian buildings and palm trees, and even if you’re unbothered by breakfast, go for coffee, it’s fabulous!
Bistro No 7 is well known for its eye-catching pink flower-filled terrace (see below), it really is a lovely way to start your day and it’s not all for show there’s also a great menu where you can pick all your favourites from smoothies to eggs and acai bowls!
And the best thing is it’s available until midday, but I recommend arriving earlier, so you can linger and enjoy the views – my favourite day in Split is pairing this breakfast with an incredible afternoon cruising the Blue Lagoon!

Tip! If you’re planning on staying for more than a day, check out my Split itinerary for how to properly organise your time to see all the sights and attractions!
10. ENJOY TAPAS AT BEAUTIFUL BOKERIA RESTAURANT
Wine and tapas at the beautiful Bokaria restaurant is a must-do in Split’s old town, you’ll find this stylish spot on the corner of an attractive square, the building is absolutely stunning and through the huge arched windows you’ll see displays of Aperol Spritz and cool decor!
Bokaria is a good place to eat and drink at any time of the day from breakfast to late in the evening, there’s a little outdoors terrace, which is always busy, you’ll have to act like a ninja to grab a table at lunchtime especially, but the best reason to eat here is the quality of food and presentation, its top notch!
11. BOAT TRIP TO THE BLUE LAGOON & ISLANDS (Top things to do in Split)
Split is perfectly situated for island-hopping boat trips, and while there are an overwhelming number of options, I highly recommend the dreamy Blue Lagoon and smaller islands just off Split’s coast!
On this amazing half-day Blue Lagoon and islands boat trip you’ll swim in azure waters, full of hidden bays and coves, totally out of sight and away from the bustle, in my experience it’s one of the best things to do in Split over the summer!
I know it’s easy to spend all of your time hanging around the old town, but a half-day boat trip is well worth going on!
Take a look at the full details and availability of this private Blue Lagoon and Islands boat trip here!

12. COOL DOWN ON SPLIT’S LOCAL BEACHES
If you want a quick swim between sightseeing, I recommend heading to Split’s smaller beaches around Marjan Hill, especially if you are visiting in the summer months, the old town can get super hot in the afternoons!
You can walk to some of the beaches from the Riva and lay your towel pretty much anywhere, but I recommend grabbing a five-minute taxi to Kasjuni Beach, a small, scenic pebble beach cove with clear water and a forest backdrop, and there’s a small beach bar (Joe’s) for renting sunbeds and umbrellas for shade!
There are more beaches in Split further along the coastline all the way up to La Meridien resort, which is the most luxury spot for sunbathing!
13. VISIT MARVLVS LIBRARY JAZZ BAR FOR WINE & JAZZ
Marvlvs Jazz Bar is one of those hidden gems in the old town, situated along a narrow cobbled street with the smallest of signs and tucked behind an oval wooden door, in the day time you’ll walk right past it!
But in the evening, this former home to the founder of literature opens up and comes alive with jazz and cocktails, it’s very cool and the only place like it in Split, I loved the atmosphere the minute I entered!
I found this jazz bar by chance, a few years ago, and I imagine it’s more recognised and popular in 2026, so I would arrive a little earlier in the evening to snag a table!
14. TAKE A DAY TRIP TO KRKA NATIONAL PARK & WINE TASTING
Krka National Park is one of the most popular day trips from Split in the summertime, the waterfalls, lakes and natural landscapes are a fantastic escape away from the bustle of the old town, it’s one of the best destinations to visit in Croatia!
I highly recommend this scenic Krka tour, which includes walks around the best part of the park and a visit to an authentic Dalmatian farm for wine tasting, especially if you’re staying in Split for three days or more. It’s one of the best experiences from Split and hassle-free, as all the logistics are taken care of!
If you’re keen to know more about the beautiful Krka falls and wine tasting, take a look at the tour details and availability here!

15. EXPLORE PRETTY HERITAGE TOWN TROGIR
Trogir is a wonderful small coastal UNESCO World Heritage town just a 40-minute drive from Split, and it really is the most idyllic place you’ll see along the coastline, with a cathedral, a central square, cobbled lanes, and a picturesque palm-treelined waterfront – very reminiscent of Split!
There are several ways to get there, and you’ll only need half a day to see it all, which makes it one of the easiest trips! For a detailed guide on visiting, including transport options and the best things to see once you’re there, read my full Split to Trogir guide.

TIPS FOR VISITING SPLIT CROATIA
When To Go To Split
Split is best from May until September, when the weather is glorious, and Riva is at its most vibrant! And there’s more to do in the summer, from alfresco dining to boat trips and beach days! July and August are the peak – super crowded months! AVOID the Ultra Festival.
How Long To Stay In Split Croatia
Two days is enough for highlights, but 3 days in Split is ideal if you want to include the beaches or a boat trip! (I prefer to spend 2-3 days in Split, then spend 5-7 days on an island; it’s a great combination.)
How To Get Around Split Croatia
Everything in and around the Old Town, such as the Riva and Marjan Hill, is completely walkable; buses, taxis and cheap Ubers cover the beaches in Split easily. The bus station is at the end of the Riva opposite the port, for going slightly further afield.
How To Get To Split From Split Airport
Split Airport is around 35 minutes from the Old Town by taxi, Uber or airport bus – or for a quick and easy journey, book a private transfer to save time and money ahead of time!
