BEST THINGS TO DO IN SPLIT CROATIA
1. EXPLORE DIOCLETIANS PALACE (Top things to do in Split)
One of the first things to do in Split is visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Diocletian’s Palace, the real heart and soul of the city! It’s exactly like walking around a ‘living museum’, and it plays an important part in the old town, where you’ll find Roman ruins, atmospheric restaurants, shops and several fantastic boutique hotels!
You can’t miss St Domnius Cathedral, it’s easy to spot wherever you are, but I do recommend climbing to the top of the bell tower for stunning old town views and photo opportunities – if you’re not afraid of rickety spiral staircases!
My favourite part of Diocletian’s Palace is the Peristyle, a must-see central square with impressive Roman columns and cellars underneath. It’s mostly occupied by restaurant Lvxor – you’ll spot the little red cushion seats on the stone steps, at night it’s extremely atmospheric with live acoustic music – don’t miss it!

2. WANDER SPLIT OLD TOWN (My favourite things to do in Split Croatia)
When you’re in Split Old Town, the best way to experience it is by wandering the narrow cobbled lanes, which go beyond Diocletian’s Palace. You can’t get too lost as it’s not a huge area, but you will find hidden gems like cafes, wine bars and restaurants – even people-free lanes if you’ve wandered far enough, and my favourite thing is that it’s all pedestrianised!
You will get to know the lanes really well by the end of your stay, and it’s a good idea to visit at different times of the day. Split really transforms from day to night, where sightseeing is replaced by romantic evening meals, cosy corners and lantern-lit streets and more doors open, revealing Jazz bars like Marvlvs Library and courtyards!
If you are there on a Saturday, the Green market aka Pazar takes over the east part of the old town and sells anything from clothes to hats, honey and of course lots of lavender-related things, you’ll see the local life in action! I came away with the summery white embroidered dress (pictured) and still wear it to this day!

3. JOIN A WALKING TOUR OF SPLIT
Split old town is absolutely layered with history, quirks and landmarks and walking around the Peristyle and breezing past the columns and cathedral really only scratches the surface of this interesting city, there’s a lot more to discover beyond these main highlights, which can only be found and explained with an expert guide!
If you want to split your time between wandering the cobbles and getting to know the real city’s history, I can’t recommend this short guided walking tour enough, it’s especially good for first-time visitors who want to delve into the Roman past; it really brings it all to life!
I felt like I could uncover the secrets of the city without wasting any precious time, I would never have found the hidden passages, ancient stairs or known some fun Game of Thrones trivia . It’s an ideal little activity to do on day one!
4. STROLL ALONG THE RIVA PROMENADE
Strolling up and down the gorgeous Riva is one of my favourite things to do in Split at any time of the day, I love the vibe and Mediterranean aesthetics, and it’s located right in front of Diocletian’s Palace, so you can easily wander from one to the other when exploring the old town.
What I appreciate most of all are the rows of pretty palm trees and the attractive terraces, stretching the length of the old town. You’ll often catch me relaxing with a glass of wine, watching the bustle with a perfect sea view, and while there are many spots to choose from, I highly recommend the Olive Tree, right in the middle!
As well as strolling and chilling out, it’s also one of my favourite places to stay in Split, the Venetian buildings house many apartments, where you’ll always have a sea view, a glorious sunset and be within a short walk of everything!
Tip! Don’t miss Republic Square to the right of the Riva, below Marjan Hill, it’s one of the largest and most colourful in Split!

5. EXPLORE MARJAN HILL VIEWPOINT (Cool things to do in Split Croatia!)
During your visit, you must walk up to Marjan Hill viewpoint in the city, which boasts the best panoramic view over the old town and islands. I’ve wandered up there more than once, I think it’s well worth the short hike, and you’ll pass by Veli Varos – the oldest neighbourhood in Split!
I’m a fan of any viewpoint and scenic walk, and this one handily joins on from the end of the Riva, it’s super easy, there’s even a signpost for it, and only one street to follow, so you can’t go wrong! The walk up should only take you 15 minutes and at the top, there’s a viewing balcony and Vilidica terrace.
My favourite experience was just before sunset, this spot is exactly where the sun goes down and you’ll see a nice golden glow over the Riviera, I recommend staying for a sunset drink on the terrace!
Tip! At the Hotel Ambasador at the end of the Riva next to Marjan Hill, you will actually get fantastic view from the incredible rooftop terrace and infinity pool – a great reason to pop in or stay here!

5. STAY IN A BEAUTIFUL BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN SPLIT OLD TOWN
One of the things that I love most of all about Split Old Town is the atmosphere, especially the peaceful mornings and at night, the lanes, lanterns and wine bars bring out a romantic side of the city and staying amongst it all is just unbeatable!
I highly encourage you to stay in one of several boutique hotels in the old town or inside the palace itself, the settings are magical! I’ve stopped here more than anywhere else, it’s super convenient, close to all the best attractions and transport and not only that, you’ll get breakfast on a pretty square or private rooftop every morning!
For me, the best boutique hotels are Judita Palace Hotelor Vestibul Palace, set within Diocletian’s Palace and Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia, where I stopped, it’s a super hotel, situated on the best looking square with a lovely rooftop!

6. BREAKFAST AT BRASSERIE NO 7
If you like a good brunch place as much as the next person, then you are going to love Bistro No 7, it is still my favourite breakfast spot in Split, right on the most attractive part of the Riva!
I know it’s an obscure thing to add, but it really is one of the best experiences in Split, I love starting my day with breakfast on the gorgeous pink flower-filled terrace, with a backdrop of Venetian buildings and a sea view, it’s unbeatable!
And not only is the setting on point, there’s also a great menu, you can pick all your favourites from smoothies to eggs and acai bowls and excellent coffee and the best thing is it’s available until midday, I recommend arriving earlier though to linger!
P.S You can also just have coffee if breakfast is included in your hotel!

7. ENJOY TAPAS AT BEAUTIFUL BOKERIA RESTAURANT
Bokeria Kitchen is one of the best experiences in Split for foodies or for anyone who appreciates a beautiful restaurant setting and great wine! This restaurant is a real crowd-pleaser, a modern Dalmatian tavern serving quality tapas day and night, I particularly like the outside terrace in the evenings, it’s super atmospheric!
One of the things that drew me to Bokaria is the building itself, with large arched windows and an impressive alcohol display, which feels upscale, but it’s not all about the looks, the dishes are well presented and tasty too, places like this is what makes Split special!
8. RELAX AT GOOSHTER BEACH CLUB
Gooshter Beach Club is the best place to be for lounging by the turquoise sea in five-star luxury, it belongs to Le Meridien Lav Split and although the location is a little away from Split Old Town, the views and setting are totally worth it!
The funny thing is, Gooshter Beach Club isn’t even that well-known, but you can definitely visit as a guest and even hire a sun lounger, there are lots to choose from and beach cabanas right next to the water, I’ve stopped for drinks and a swim, it’s glorious!
You can easily grab an Uber to get there I recommend before noon for the best experience. It’s less than 15 minutes away and you won’t regret it, I’ve been many times, the scenery is stunning!
9. GO ISLAND HOPPING IN SPLIT (Unique things to do in Split)
Split is perfectly situated to do a boat trip right from the Riva, it couldn’t be easier, and while there are an overwhelming amount of options taking you as far as Vis – too far if you ask me, you will spend more time battling the waves (and the larger islands deserve a few nights stay), I actually recommend the dreamy Blue Lagoon and smaller islands just off Split’s coast!
My favourite boat trip experience was this private Blue Lagoon and islands boat trip, the Azure-like waters are spectacular, and we had it all to ourselves – away from the crowds! From the bustling harbour, you are transported to the most stunning, unspoilt islands and landscapes that are really only accessible by boat. It’s a fantastic and easy boat trip for discovering hidden gems on the water!
I know it’s easy to get sucked into the Old Town and spend all of your time there, but a half-day boat trip is well worth going on, it doesn’t eat into your time. I always recommend the Blue Lagoon from Split – it’s by far the best!

10. SUNBATHE ON SPLIT’S LOCAL BEACHES
If you want a quick swim break between sightseeing, I recommend heading over to Split’s smaller beaches around Marjan Hill, especially if you are visiting over the summer months, the old town can get super hot and there’s only a couple of hotels with a pool!
Kasjuni Beach is my favourite in this location, it is a small pebble beach cove with clear water and a backdrop of the nature park, it’s more scenic than it sounds, it actually looks like a mountain from your horizontal lounger position! I’ve sunbathed here a few times and always rented a sun lounger from Jo’s beach bar for the shade; otherwise, there is none.
I know it’s possible to walk to this beach, but I tried it once and gave up. You are definitely better off taking a taxi from along the Riva; the ride is only 5 minutes, much less hassle!

11. VISIT MARVLVS LIBRARY JAZZ BAR FOR WINE & JAZZ
Marvlvs Jazz Bar is one of those hidden gems in the old town that I was referring to earlier, you’ll probably walk right past it in the daytime as it’s situated along a narrow cobbled street with the smallest of signs and behind an oval wooden door.
But in the evening it opens up and comes alive with live jazz and cocktails, it’s the only place like it in Split and I loved it the minute I entered, it’s a cool space and the background story is that’s it’s home to the founder of literature, which is reflected in the menus and decor, it’s charming and a good vibe!
I found this jazz bar one evening by chance, a few years ago now, and I imagine it’s more recognised and popular in 2026, so I would arrive a little earlier in the evening to snag a table!
EASY DAY TRIPS FROM SPLIT CROATIA
12. KRKA NATIONAL PARK & WINE TASTING
If you’re staying in Split for three days or more, I recommend going on a day trip, there are some spectacular destinations, including nature ones nearby that offer a complete change of scene from heritage and bustle.
I’m a huge fan of Krka Falls National Park, which is popular from May to September and well known for its spectacular waterfalls, walks and tranquil boat tours through the lakes. It really is a great day out and is much easier to get to from Split, the distance is not so big, which allows you enough time to also visit Skradin for local wine and charcuterie tasting!
For this excursion, it’s better to be on a curated tour, since you are in such a remote location, I took this Krka falls tour, to skip the logistics and best of all it included a visit to an authentic Dalmatian farm for wine tasting and it was a great experience and one I highly recommend – you won’t get the same effect with a big tour group, especially if you visit is over the peak summer months!
If you’re keen to know more about the beautiful Krka falls and wine tasting, take a look at the tour details and availability here!

13. EXPLORE TROGIR OLD TOWN
Trogir is a wonderful small coastal heritage town just a 45-minute drive from Split, and it really is the most idyllic place you’ll see along the coastline, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first arrived here a few years ago, for somewhere so pretty it seemed totally under the radar!
I’ve since visited Trogir many times, I love the more relaxed, small-town vibe and sights; it’s perfect for sightseeing in a short amount of time. Trogir Old Town is actually a UNESCO World Heritage and has it’s own charming Riva, attractive square with a cathedral and set of waterfront terraces to explore – think of it as a mini Split!
You can visit Trogir from Split several ways, including a simple taxi if you are on a time crunch, and to see it all, you will only need a half day; it’s the easiest trip!
