Tulum Pueblo Overview

Tulum Pueblo is the main town of Tulum Resort, it’s located 15-minutes by car or a 30-minute cycle ride from the centre of Tulum’s 10-mile beach on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

In Tulum Pueblo you’ll find smaller boutique hotels in the centre and exclusive 5-star hotels with good-sized pools just on the outskirts, these hotels are more desirable to stay for amenities, space and peacefulness – I’ve listed my favourite three below!

In this location, there are coffee houses, rooftop bars and authentic restaurants to explore and you’ll be closer to the local freshwater cenotes, it’s a good base if you’re exploring the Yucatan independently!

HOTELS IN TULUM PUEBLO TIPS

WHEN TO VISIT

Visit Tulum in the low season, November or February to April, the prices are lower and it avoids the rainy season and seaweed from late April until October.

You’ll want to avoid the holiday season in December, Easter and Mexican holidays as the whole area gets busy and expensive!

BOOK EARLY

Book your hotel in Tulum Pueblo at least 6 months in advance, to secure the best rates and availability, especially during peak season, which falls December until early February. Tulum’s hotels typically have fewer rooms (as little as 8) and fill up fast!

TRUSTED BOOKING APPS

Use official platforms for reservations and bookings in Tulum, websites that I use are Expedia and  booking.com for hotels Viator for best day trips and experiences. Each has its own flexible booking options, offers and dedicated customer service line!

HIRE A BIKE

Cycling is the best way to get from Tulum Pueblo to the beach and other attractions in Tulum – it’s an popular mode of transport.

You can visit lots of places and save a tonne of money on taxi fares (one of my favourite things to do in Tulum is cycle along the Beach Road)! I recommend renting a bike with Ola Bike Tulum.

Note: at night you’ll need a taxi as the roads are not very well lit and become unsafe with traffic!

BRING CASH

The currency in Tulum is Mexican Pesos, but most places accept US Dollars. Cash and local currency are best for smaller cafés around Tulum Pueblo, taxis, buses and entrance fees.

If you have to pay anything at your hotel, choose the local currency in cash it will work out better, trust me!

HOTEL EXPECTATIONS

Luxury hotels in Tulum Pueblo are not your typical hotel! 5-Star’s here are more rustic with an eco-look including wood and natural materials that blends perfectly with the jungle environment.

COMPLETE YOUR TULUM TRIP!

If you’re wondering what to do in Tulum Mexico, there are tonnes of incredible natural wonders and attractions that will elevate your trip!

You can easily include one or two experiences to your Tulum itinerary whether you’re visiting for 3 days or a fortnight – from ancient Mayan ruins to luxury sunset sailing or natural crystal clear freshwater pools – cenotes “sink holes” deep in the Mayan Jungle.

Why not start or end your trip with a few days on Tulum beach? Staying on the beachfront, feet in the sand, is the best experience you can have in Tulum! Find your favourite beachfront hotel in Tulum in my complete guide to the very best beach hotels in Tulum Mexico.

GETTING FROM TULUM PUEBLO TO THE BEACH

How do I get from Tulum Pueblo to the beach?

One of the most important things to know beforehand is how to get from Tulum Pueblo to the beach, here’s the best options plus tips!!

CYCLING

Due to the spread-out nature of Tulum and the extremely long beach road, cycling is usually the preferred mode of transport! It will take you around 30 minutes to cycle along the footpaths and beach road from Tulum Pueblo to the beginning of the private beach – and there are secure and manned bike racks to lock your bike up!

Bike hire is around $7 per day or complimentary – if you’re staying in a good hotel!!

TAXI / PRIVATE DRIVER

You can hop in a taxi from Tulum Pueblo to the beach, this is the quickest option, a 10-minute drive, but the fee is around $25-35 each way, keep this in mind! Taxi’s or private drivers are essential for the evening as the roads are not well-lit for cycling or walking.

WALKING

If you’re staying closer to Aldea Zama, you can walk along the footpath, it’ll take you about an hour – and be aware that the beach road that runs behind Tulum’s main private beach doesn’t have a pavement!!

Note: Entry to the beach is via a hotel, pick a hotel like Coco Tulum or a beachclub if you want to be central on the private beach!

HOTELS IN TULUM PUEBLO FAQ

Why stay in Tulum Pueblo?

Here’s where you can find a luxury hotel in Tulum at an affordable price without sacrificing quality or that true boho Tulum feel – and you don’t have to go far for a great breakfast or a good night out!

What are the best 5-star hotels in Tulum Pueblo?

If I had to choose just one best 5-star hotel in the Town of Tulum it would of course be Hotel Bardo! I loved my experience from start to finish, it’s super bohemian-luxe! Followed by Una Vida, Laya Tulum and Muare – all stunning 5-star hotels in Tulum Pueblo!

What are the best luxury hotels in Tulum Mexico?

There’s no shortage of luxury hotels in Tulum, from 5-star barefoot luxury to beachfront luxury boutiques! For first-time visitors I always recommend The Beach, it can’t be beat for location and facilities! Other best luxury hotels include Hotel Bardo and luxury hotels in Tulum beach; La ValiseEncantada, Xela and Mezzanine!

Are there any all inclusive hotels in Tulum Pueblo?

Tulum Pueblo is more like a small town, there aren’t any hotels in Tulum Pueblo all inclusive. You’ll find them further along on the beachfront towards Cancun, such as Secrets Akumal Riviera Maya and the adult-only Unico Hotel Riviera Maya.

What are the best things to do in Tulum Town?

In Tulum Town, you don’t need a Tulum City Guide or anything like that, it’s not a city with lots of attractions! You have to go on day trips to see attractions around Tulum like the local ruins and cenotes – otherwise you have the beautiful beach, beachclubs and cool restaurants – that’s the main attraction of Tulum!

Tip! Pick one of the downtown Tulum hotels with a pool area and facilities- like Hotel Bardo!

Best budget hotel in Tulum Pueblo?

Casa Pueblo (not on this list!) in the centre of Pueblo Tulum is one of the best budget hotels – fully designed by creatives. It’s clean and minimalist and has a courtyard and pool. Take a look here – this is the hotel if you want that authentic community vibe!

What are the best restaurants in Tulum Town?

Now, in my experience, the best restaurants in Tulum are mainly concentrated within the Hotel Zone. Upscale Tulum Pueblo restaurants are pretty scarce! You will encounter more breakfast hotspots and coffee shops such as Alma Verde for brunch, Delicio, Botanica and Raw Love.

Where to go out in Tulum Pueblo?

In Tulum downtown my favourite places are Nana’s rooftop bar for evening drinks and popular Bateys for mojitos and live music.

What are the airports near Tulum Mexico?

There is a new airport by Tulum Mexico (TQO) it’s 35 minutes outside of Tulum Centro – servicing just a few selected international destinations, you can find out more details here.

The vast majority of visitors will be flying in and out of Cancun International Airport – a 2hr commute and will organise a taxi or the Ado Bus – conveniently the Ado bus station is in Tulum Pueblo.
