TOP Things To Do In Dubrovnik Croatia (Beyond The City Walls)

Last updated on October 9th, 2025 at 01:04 pm

If you’re visiting Dubrovnik and are looking for the best things to do in Dubrovnik beyond the old town walls, I’ve got you covered!

Dubrovnik is beautiful, it’s one of the best places to visit in Europe, the charming UNESCO Hertiage town is the main draw, but beyond the old town walls there’s islands, Riviera’s, stunning beach coves and my personal favourite spot Cavtat bay!

I’ve stayed in Dubrovnik many times and have never gotten bored with the number of things to do right on the doorstep, including this scenic boat trip and swimming in the crystal clear water beaches that are definitely worth staying extra days for!

In this guide, I’ll show you the best things to do in Dubrovnik Croatia, to make the most out of your trip and help plan the perfect itinerary!

Let’s get to it!

THINGS TO DO IN DUBROVNIK – Beyond The Walls

1. TAKE A TRIP TO LOKRUM ISLAND

Lokrum is the closest island to Dubrovnik old town. If you have taken a walk along the ancient walls or sunbathed at Banje Beach, you will have seen a pretty good view of it! From the harbour, you can take a short, 10-minute ferry to explore the island or a private boat (if you want to avoid the queues).

At the island, there are a number of rocky areas in which people sunbathe and swim (to the left as you approach the dock) and further inland, you’ll find a cactus garden to wander, roaming peacocks and a restaurant next to the Benedictine Monastery.

We stopped for lunch at Eden Garden restaurant, it’s very good for a light bite (we shared a pizza) or glass of wine and the terrace is a tranquil oasis, I do recommend it if you’re going to the island, whether you end up there independently or on the Game of Thrones Tour (yes, this is another filming location).

Just bear in mind the island is very rustic and only takes an hour to walk around, so if this is your only activity on the water, I would recommend a visit to Cavtat or a boat tour instead of Lokrum for a more worthwhile experience.

Tickets to Lokrum Island are from €27 per person; you can get them on the day directly from the harbour kiosks.

2. EXPLORE THE ELAPHITI ISLANDS & BLUE CAVE

The Elaphiti Islands are a small group of islands scattered around Dubrovnik’s coastline; a few of them have villages, such as Kolocep, while others are totally natural. Among them are inviting vineyards and the type of restaurants you swoon over!

A private boat trip from Dubrovnik town harbour is the best way to explore, as a lot of the group tour options are limited and crowded, but with a private boat, you have flexibility and can see as many things as you like. It’s seriously one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik!

Our experience of this Elaphiti boat trip was incredible, away from the tourist trail and surrounded by nature, we visited the magical Blue Cave, secluded bays and the clearest water for swimming. We also opted for wine tasting and a stop at gorgeous BOWA private beach, which was the highlight of our trip!

It’s ideal if you have only 3 days in Dubrovnik, as you can do this trip on your third day after you’ve seen all the sights of the old town!

3. VISIT MOUNT SRD FOR PANORAMIC VIEWS

Just outside of Dubrovnik old town, Mount Srd offers a stunning backdrop and views across the burnt orange rooftops, patchwork of lanes, the bright blue sea of the Adriatic and Lokrum Island!

You can hike up to the top and follow the ‘unofficial’ path to get there, which is rugged with rocks, it will take you about an hour. Alternatively, a more straightforward way to reach the top is by taking the 5-minute cable car outside of Buza Gate, located at the back of the town.

The view is unbelievable, so I recommend lingering here longer, there’s an excellent Mediterranean restaurant called Panorama with a fantastic terrace, which is definitely worth making a reservation for in advance, either for lunch or sunset – it offers the best 360 panorama in Dubrovnik!

From March to October the Cable Car costs €27 for a round trip.

4. DISCOVER COASTAL GEM CAVTAT BAY

If you’re looking to spend the day somewhere truly beautiful, Cavtat offers a tranquil harbour, pretty terraces, a typical small heritage town and a stunning coastline. It’s one of my favourite places to visit in Dubrovnik!

Cavtat is only 25 minutes away from Dubrovnik old town harbour by taxi boat, which arrives right on the waterfront. The water glistens and the area is peaceful in comparison to bustling Dubrovnik Town, it’s worth coming just for the scenery and lunch on the waterfront.

I love the views from the coastal walk around the bay, you find the clearest turquoise water and small pebble beaches for swimming, there’s a little beach bar called Star, which is a nice spot for a drink.

I have detailed all my Cavtat tips in this full guide to Cavtat from Dubrovnik

5. RELAX AT DUBROVNIK’S BEST BEACHES & CLUBS

A day by the sea is a definite must-do! Dubrovnik’s peninsula is surrounded by calm pebbly beach coves and scenic shallow-water beaches.

Banje Beach is the most popular beach as it’s located right next to the city walls and offers views of Lokum Island, and further along the coastline, there’s Sveti Jakov, a quieter natural beach cove that can be reached by taxi boat from the harbour.

My favourite spot to spend the day is the chic Coral Beach Club set within a stunning bay (see below pics), where you can relax on daybeds, sip cocktails and later enjoy DJ sets until the sun goes down – it really is a complete vibe!

Coral Beach is located near Lapad, 25 minutes from Dubrovnik Pile Gate, you can grab a taxi or bus number 12 – both drop you off at the top of the hill. I also recommend booking a sunbed online and arriving early – I’ve visited at 10am in early May and it was perfect!

6. TAKE A GAME OF THRONES LOCATION TOUR

If you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones show, you will love this walking tour! It truly feels like you have wandered on set! Dubrovnik features in a lot of the famous scenes and filming locations, beyond the old town, such as Fort Lovrijenac (aka the Red Keep) and Lokrum Island, which was rented out in its entirety for the Qarth scenes!

Taking a Game of Thrones tour will ensure you visit all the important filming locations! We have no regrets booking this GOT tour for behind-the-scenes details and exact spots – it’s a fun thing to do and you get to see some unique and scenic areas! Read about the locations and more in my Game of Thrones Tour post

7. SEE STUNNING KOTOR IN MONTENEGRO

For a day of adventure, I can’t recommend Kotor enough, it’s only two hours along the cost from Dubrovnik old town and the drive alone is worth doing, it’s super mountainous and the scenery is jaw-dropping!

We took this Kotor tour, which I recommend if you want to see more of the country’s top sights like iconic Sveti Stefan, the UNESCO Bay of Kotor and Perast, which is a pretty coastal town with spectacular mountain and sea views!

Our guide made this trip incredible, balancing sightseeing with history and included lots of time on our own to explore on foot (which is the best way), walking to viewpoints and stopping for lunch. It was well organised and one of our favourite trips – just take a look at the picture below!

8. VISIT UNESCO MOSTAR & KRAVICE WATERFALLS

If you’re spending 4 days or even a week in Dubrovnik you might want to put UNESCO Mostar and Kravice waterfalls on your itinerary, it is a popular day trip from Dubrovnik!

Mostar day trip is perfect for history lovers and for those who want to see more of the surrounding area, including a visit to another country in old Yugoslavia. Mostar is a beautiful and historic town in Bosnia, a World Heritage Site and the main highlight!

Mostar town has plenty of cobbles and traditional stone buildings, great places to eat and drink and absorb the atmosphere of the ancient Mostar Bridge, which is what most people come to see. But, I also recommend a visit to nearby Kravice waterfalls, which you can do with this highly rated Mostar Tour, for a fascinating day of history and nature!

WHERE TO STAY IN DUBROVNIK (BEYOND THE WALLS)

If you’re planning more than just a quick visit, staying outside Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a great idea! You’ll often find more space, easier beach access, and better value – while still being only a short distance from the historic centre. Here’s my top three picks!

Ploce Gate Area

Steps from the Old Town entrance, great for first-time visitors. You’ll have restaurants, bars, and sights on your doorstep without staying inside the walls. Stay at Villa Allure.

Cavtat

A beautiful coastal town and Riviera, 30 minutes away from Dubrovnik’s old town harbour. Cavtat offers tranquil vibes, clear waters, and fab sunsets. Stay at Hotel Croatia Cavtat.

Lapad & Babin Kuk

Located a short bus ride from Old Town, this area is home to sandy coves, waterfront promenades, and family-friendly resorts. Stay at Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik.

PRACTICAL TIPS FOR EXPLORING BEYOND THE WALLS

Exploring outside Dubrovnik’s city walls is easier than you might think – but a little planning and prep goes a long way. Here are some practical tips to help you make the most of your time:

Getting Around Dubrovnik

Boats

From Dubrovnik’s old town harbour, ferries and private charters are the easiest way to reach the islands. Regular ferries run to Lokrum and a couple of the larger Elafiti Islands, while private boats give you the flexibility to swim, snorkel, and explore more hidden gems away from the crowds.

Check out the best Dubrovnik boat tours if you’d like a guided option – recommended!

Buses

For nearby towns like Cavtat or Coral Beach Club, Dubrovnik’s local buses are cheap and reliable. Services run frequently from Pile Gate, making it a stress-free way to explore the coastline without hiring a car and looking for parking!

Tours

If you’d prefer everything organised, booking a half-day or full-day excursion can save time and hassle. Popular picks include Elaphiti Islands and Montenegro adventures.

I’ve rounded up my favourites in this guide to the best Dubrovnik day trips.

Water Taxi

Water taxis from Dubrovnik’s old town harbour are a fantastic option for Cavtat, running a regular hourly schedule from 9:30 am, and you’ll see lovely coastal scenery along the way.

How Many Days In Dubrovnik

I personally recommend staying for a minimum of 3 days in Dubrovnik to see all its magic and squeeze in a boat trip!

  • 1–2 days: Focus on the Old Town and one nearby activity (e.g., Lokrum or Mount Srđ).
  • 3–4 days: Add in a boat tour or day trip to Cavtat or the Elafiti Islands.
  • 5+ days: Mix sightseeing with relaxation at beaches and beach clubs.

So that wraps up my guide to the best things to do in Dubrovnik Croatia, that takes you beyond the city walls! Dubrovnik may be world-famous for its Old Town, but spending more time here exploring the area really pays off!

From lazy afternoons at hidden beaches to nearby islands and heritage towns, this city is so much more than a day trip. Personally, I have never stopped for less than four nights. Trust me, the extra days are worth it; this region is stunning!
