THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN DUBROVNIK CROATIA

DUBROVNIK CITY WALLS

Walking along the Dubrovnik walls is a must-do activity for breathtaking views in Dubrovnik old town, you’ll see the city’s layout, orange rooftops and soak in the panoramic views of the Adriatic and the islands!

The full circuit from either Pile or Ploce gate is around 2km, which takes around an hour of your time (subject to taking lots of pictures and gazing at the views). I recommend going in the evening for the best light, you’ll beat the midday crowds and intense sun!

Tickets cost €40 per person, or free if you buy the Dubrovnik pass, which includes a lot more things to see in Dubrovnik old town – recommended!

DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

Dubrovnik old town is the main iconic hub of Dubrovnik and Croatia, a postcard-perfect town where burnt orange rooftops meet the cobalt blue sea! Exploring the historic streets is one of the best things to see and do in Dubrovnik, you can walk for hours among the cobbles and steep stone stairs, getting lost in the maze of narrow lanes!

You’ll come across the main historic sights of Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace and Stradun (main street) as well as boutique cafes, gelato shops, courtyards and squares, perfect for people watching and soaking up the city’s atmosphere!

If you’re a foodie, this is also where you’ll discover some of the city’s best places to eat. Don’t miss my guide to the best restaurants in old town Dubrovnik for wine bars, seafood spots, and charming local favourites!

DUBROVNIK BOAT TOUR

One of the best ways to experience Dubrovnik is from the water! A boat tour gives you a whole new perspective of the city’s walls before whisking you away to nearby gems like Lokrum Island or the Elaphiti Islands. For something extra special, you can jump on this private boat tour and spend the day swimming in hidden coves, but do not miss BOWA – we loved this overwater gem!

It’s a must-do if you have the time, and booking ahead is worth it, especially in summer. You can browse trusted options on GetYourGuide or Viator, or read my full guide to the best Dubrovnik boat tours to find the trip that suits you.

If you only have 3 days in Dubrovnik, here’s a full itinerary for how you can squeeze in a boat trip!

GAME OF THRONES

Now the Game of Thrones is a hot topic in Dubrovnik since it holds a lot of the famous scenes and filming locations such as Cersei’s walk of shame down the stairs – which is actually the Jesuit Stairs in the centre of Dubrovnik’s old town.

If you’re a fan of the show, it feels like you have wandered on set! Taking a Game of Thrones tour will ensure you visit them all! We have no regrets booking this GOT tour for behind-the-scenes details and exact spots – it’s a fun thing to do and you get to see some unique and scenic spots! Read about the locations and more in my dedicated Game of Thrones Tour post!

FORT LOVRIJENAC

Another stunning viewpoint, Fort Lovrijenac or St. Lawrence Fortress, sits on a huge rock at the end of Pile Gate towards to the West Harbour and offers different views from the city’ walls, and feels like a less touristic area.

Pile Gate is a nice area to stroll through, you can walk across the harbour front, where you will see a couple of small local ‘beaches’ (more stone and concrete than beach) and some nice terraces along the way. Entrance to the Fort is included in the Dubrovnik Pass, otherwise it’s €15 per person.

DUBROVNIK’S BEACHES

A day by the sea is a must in Dubrovnik, it’s surrounded by calm pebbly beach coves and shallow water beaches that are worth spending your time on!

Banje Beach is the most popular, it’s the city’s most famous stretch of sand, with views straight across to the Old Town walls and there’s a beach club where you can hire sunbeds and umbrellas. Further along, Sveti Jakov is a quieter natural beach cove that can only be reached by steps or a taxi boat.

You’ll also find hidden coves dotted all along the coast that are ideal for a quick swim in turquoise waters, especially if you head out to Cavtat!

BEACH CLUBS

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more stylish, Dubrovnik is also home to chic beach clubs where you can sip cocktails, lounge in daybeds, and enjoy DJ sets as the sun goes down. Cococabana Beach Club and Coral Beach Club are beautiful spots to spend the day – especially Coral Beach Club, it’s stunning! (Arrive early and avoid July and August!)

Coral Beach Club one of the best things to see and do in Dubrovnik

CABLE CAR & MOUNT SRD

A ride on the cable car to Mount Srd is one of the best things to see and do in Dubrovnik! It offers the most epic panoramic view across the entire old town, Lokrum Island and sea beyond; it truly is a sight to behold!

The cable car is just outside of Buza Gate, which costs €27 per person and whisks you up in 5 minutes. It’s well worth it, but what makes it even better is stopping for lunch at the Panorama Restaurant, where you can linger for longer and enjoy the views – reservations are a must!

CAVTAT BAY

Cavtat is a stunning heritage town and bay, around 25 minutes by taxi boat from Dubrovnik’s old town harbour, it’s one of the best things to do in Dubrovnik! It is authentic and tranquil and a very picturesque spot to visit for the afternoon or even longer!

You’ll find a charming heritage town, a waterfront full of nice restaurant terraces and a beautiful coastal walk leading to small pebble beaches and ‘Little Star’ bar! Don’t miss my guide to Cavtat from Dubrovnik for the full details!

You’ll find Cavtat Bay and other gems in my guide to the top things to do in Dubrovnik Croatia – outside the city walls!

Gradska Kavava Arsenal is situated on the old town harbour of Dubrovnik, it’s a fancy historic restaurant with two terraces, one facing the old town and the other with harbour views. Service is top-notch and the menu offers Mediterranean dishes – I also love this spot for breakfast!

Lucin Katun

Lucin Kantun is a gem in Dubrovnik old town, it’s my go-to place for a tasty light lunch or tapas in the early evening. The food is always amazing and presented well – try the spinach filo pastry or the black risotto – it’s meant to be one of the best in town!

Proto Fish Restaurant

Considered one of the best seafood restaurants in Dubrovnik old town, Proto has been serving traditional Dalmatian cuisine since 1886! You’ll find everything from lobster to seafood pasta, it’s a beautiful place and there’s a secret rooftop terrace!

If you’re looking for a fine dining experience in Dubrovnik, then Nautika is the place to go. Located just outside the city walls, Nautika offers stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, Fortress and Lokrum Island – it’s romantic and offers two Michelin stars!

BEST BARS IN DUBROVNIK

Buza Bar

A simple bottle-only hole in the wall bar with just outside the old town wall, with balconies and little round tables and chairs overlooking Lokrum Island – Buza is a chilled spot to while away the hours!

D’Vino Wine Bar

A popular and cosy wine bar on the cobbles in the old town that has the largest choice of local wines! Grab a seat outside the narrow passage and take your selections with a sharing board to kick start your night!

Fratellos Prosecco Bar

Fratellos Processco Bar – it’s the best bar in Dubrovnik with three levels and sweeping views over the blue sea. It offers ambience, jazz and a selection of great cocktails! I found this gem just a 10-minute walk outside of Pile Gate.

PLAN A DAY TRIP FROM DUBROVNIK

Dubrovnik is surrounded by amazing places less two hours away! I recommend exploring beyond Dubrovnik’s town walls and jumping on a boat or a day of adventure into neighbouring Bosnia or Montenegro!

Elaphiti Islands

A trip to the Elaphiti Islands is a Dubrovnik must see; they are the small group of islands nearest Dubrovnik old town. I definitely recommend a full-day private speed boat tour, our day out was an incredible experience, away from the bustle and surrounded by nature, secluded bays, caves and crystal clear water for swimming, wine tasting and a stop at gorgeous BOWA private beach!

Kotor & Perast – Montenegro

Kotor in Montenegro is an incredibly scenic place and the drive to get there from Dubrovnik is also amazing! You’ll have an epic day on this Kotor and Perast tour exploring the UNESCO old town, pretty coastal town Perast and hiking to the viewpoint for spectacular mountain and sea views – trust me Kotor is not to be missed!

Mostar & Kravice Waterfalls- Bosnia

A Mostar day trip from Dubrovnik is perfect for history lovers. Mostar is a beautiful and historic town in Bosnia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site! It has plenty of cobbles and traditional stone buildings, great places to eat and drink and absorb the atmosphere of Mostar Bridge and it’s a perfect location to combine with Kravice waterfalls.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIPS FOR DUBROVNIK

When To Visit Dubrovnik

For the best experience, great weather and fewer crowds, May to early June and September to early October are the best months to visit Dubrovnik, which are the shoulder season months. Mid-May is my favourite time, as the evenings are lighter and the beaches are just opening up!

How Long To Stay In Dubrovnik

I recommend staying for a minimum of 3 full days in Dubrovnik or 5 nights for a more relaxing time and to visit the nearby beaches and islands, and go on an epic day trip from Dubrovnik!

How To Avoid Cruise Ship Crowds

Dubrovnik is stunning, but it can feel a little overwhelming when multiple cruise ships dock at once. Suddenly, the narrow Old Town streets are packed and it’s hard to enjoy the magic in peak summer months.

I recommend checking the cruise schedule and avoiding the peak times in the old town between 10am and 3pm. You can also escape to the islands – take a boat trip and swap crowds for crystal-clear water and secluded coves!

How To Get Around Dubrovnik

Walking

If you’re staying close to Dubrovnik’s old town, such as Ploce or Pile Gate you can easily get to the main attractions on foot. Dubrovnik is a very walkable place; the old town is surrounded by a wall and cars cannot access it.

Taxi

Dubrovnik’s white and green (metred) taxis are outside of Pile and Ploce Gate – although expensive! You can also use Uber in Dubrovnik, which is the most affordable and quickest way to travel to and from things like beach clubs and the ferry port.

Local Bus

Local buses will take you to Port Gruz (no 8) for onward travel to the Islands, Cavtat (no 10) and Lapad (no 12), including Coral Beach Club. The main bus stand is just outside of Pile Gate.

Car

Renting a car is a great way to travel around Croatia, it gives you freedom and flexibility to stop at interesting places and travel at your own speed. Car rentals are as low as €20 per day, making it economical. I recommend Discover Cars for the best rates.

Water Taxi & Private Boat

And for an adventure? A water taxi or private boat from Dubrovnik’s old town harbour is the best way to travel, especially if you’re heading to beautiful Cavtat or the Elaphiti Islands.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN DUBROVNIK TIPS!

WHAT TO PACK

Bring the essentials:

WHAT TO BOOK

Dubrovnik is the most popular place to visit in Croatia. Booking your accommodation in advance is essential, and to avoid disappointment, I recommend securing your day trips and transportation, like ferries and private transfers for onward journeys at least 2 weeks in advance!

When planning your itinerary for Dubrovnik, it’s a good idea to reserve things like top restaurants for evening meals and beach club sunbeds online !

HOW TO BOOK

I highly recommend booking excursions with Viator and Get Your Guide. Their customer service and flexible booking options are fantastic. For example, if your plans change with Get Your Guide, you can cancel or change with just 24 hours’ notice – book your day tours in Dubrovnik securely and in advance!

DRESS CODES

If you’re walking through Old Town Dubrovnik, I recommend dressing a little chic. It is the upmarket area of Croatia, and you won’t see anyone walking around like they just came off the beach, definitely not in swimwear – you’ll likely get a fine!
