15 Best Things To Do In Dubrovnik Old Town (2026 Guide)

Last updated on December 14th, 2025 at 09:14 pm

Dubrovnik old town is the most popular destination in all of Croatia, famed for its historic sites, orange rooftops and striking views over the Adriatic – it’s one of those special places that lives up to the hype!

I’ve visited the old town of Dubrovnik dozens of times; it’s one of the most jaw-dropping towns in Europe, packed with incredible activities and landmarks to explore! Some of my favourite things include walking the city walls and enjoying lunch with a stunning harbour view!

In this post, you’ll discover the best things to see and do in Dubrovnik old town, based on my personal research, from must-see popular sights to hidden gems, so you can plan your own perfect itinerary!

Here’s my top 15 best things to do in Dubrovnik old town, plus tips!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

1. WALK THE FAMOUS CITY WALLS

I’m sure you’ve heard about the famous walls and might be wondering if they’re worth it?! Well, if you want to see the best view in Dubrovnik old town and UNESCO World Heritage Site, this is the place to be! Walking along the Dubrovnik walls is a must-do activity for breathtaking views. You’ll see the city’s layout, orange rooftops and soak in the panoramic views of the Adriatic and the islands!

The full circuit from either Pile or Ploce gate is 2km, which takes around an hour (or longer depending on how many pictures you take!). I recommend going in the evening for the best light, you’ll beat the midday crowds and intense sun!

Tickets at the gate for the walls and fortress entry cost €40 per person, or free if you buy the Dubrovnik City Pass, which includes many more attractions and transport in Dubrovnik old town – worth it!

2. GO ON A GAME OF THRONES WALKING TOUR

If you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones show, you will love this walking tour! It truly feels like you have wandered on set! Dubrovnik old town holds a lot of the famous scenes and filming locations, such as Cersei’s walk of shame down the stone staircase, which is actually the Jesuit Stairs near the cathedral.

Taking a Game of Thrones tour will ensure you visit all the important filming locations! We have no regrets booking this GOT tour for behind-the-scenes details and exact spots – it’s a fun thing to do and you get to see some unique and scenic areas! Read about the locations and more in my Game of Thrones Tour post!

3. WANDER DUBROVNIK’S OLD TOWN LANES

Dubrovnik old town is a charming place to walk around, I recommend reserving an hour or two to explore all the cobbled lanes, alleyways and flower-filled stairs! You’ll soon discover hidden gems, beautiful buildings, courtyards and restaurants such as Bota Sushi Bar and Lucin Kantun tapas, which is one of my favourite finds!

During the daytime, the lanes are pretty quiet as most day trippers mainly head towards the Stradum and bigger sights and attractions like the Fotress and Pile Gate, leaving the lanes peaceful to wander! The evenings bring out a lively atmosphere, twinkling lights, and attentive waiters; the transformation is incredible!

4. STROLL ALONG THE STRADUN (MAIN STREET)

You’ll stroll along the Stradun many times as it’s the main thoroughfare of Dubrovnik old town. I think it’s beautiful, there’s just something special about the smooth, shiny limestone floor and ancient walkway!

If you’re staying in either Ploce or Pile you can access the Stradum through either draw gate and walk from one end to the other, it will take you around 30 minutes, I always stop for a coffee halfway along at the oldest cafe; Cafe Festival, it’s excellent for people watching!

5. RIDE THE CABLE CAR FOR STUNNING VIEWS

For the most spectacular panoramic view over Dubrovnik old town and Lokrum Island you must take a ride on the cable car to the top of Mount Srd – it’s only five minutes long!

To make your visit even better, I recommend making a reservation at the restaurant Panorama at the top in advance, either for lunch or sunset – it offers a nice Mediterranean menu. You definitely pay for the view, but the experience of looking down at the rooftops is worth it. (PS. you can also just sit at the cafe with a nice iced coffee if you’re short on time!)

From March to October the Cable Car costs €27 for a round trip.

6. EXPLORE THE FRANCISCAN MONASTERY

The Franciscan Monastery is an interesting building, I was surprised to learn that it’s actually a 14th-century pharmacy, one of the oldest in Europe and it is still stocked with goods to buy if you want to peak inside!

You’ll find typical stone columns and a small museum at the back if you’re keen to learn all about the history of it. So far, I’ve skipped the Monastery, having already seen a lot of historic buildings, so I can’t comment if it’s worth the €6 entrance or not, but if you have the Dubrovnik City Pass it’s included.

7. VISIT RECTOR’S PALACE

Rector’s Palace is housed within a beautiful Gothic-Renaissance building with arched courtyards, carved staircases and preserved rooms that show off 15th-century architecture. When I was there in the morning, a wedding photographer was taking beautiful photos of newlyweds; it was so romantic!

The palace is also the city’s Cultural History Museum and another Game of Thrones location! Entry is included with the Dubrovnik City Pass or costs around €15 if you purchase it individually. (Full disclosure, I’m not sure if the entrance fee is worth it alone, I was only inside around 10 minutes!)

8. ADMIRE DUBROVNIK CATHEDRAL & CHURCHES

Dubrovnik old town has plenty of small churches and a fabulous Baroque cathedral to admire, which is completely free to go inside – this is incredible in itself! It’s located just off the main square and it’s very striking (just take a look at the picture of me and the cathedral below), dating back centuries – you’ll easily spot this cathedral on your walk around!

If you prefer a guided tour around the historic attractions of Dubrovnik old town without the Game of Thrones element, this 1.5 hour walking tour comes highly recommended!

9. WINE TASTING IN DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

Wine lovers will be happy, I have located the best spots for local wine tasting along the charming lanes of the old town! M’arden is a wonderful romantic wine bar offering quality pairings within a lovely atmosphere (although these days it’s verging on a restaurant so I advise to get there quick before it changes!)

For something more cosy, you can check out wine bar Skar or D’vino, both have a few tall tables and chairs outside along the maze of alleyways, perfect for sipping wine and relaxing!

10. VISIT SCENIC LOVRIJENAC FORTRESS

Fort Lovrijenac is just outside of the Dubrovnik old town walls and it’s another famous Game of Thrones landmark and stunning viewpoint! It sits on a huge rock at the end of Pile Gate towards the West Harbour and offers sweeping views of the city’s sloping walls, town and sea below – you can even spot the kayak tours – it’s one of my favourite views.

It’s a nice walk along the shoreline, where you’ll pass small beaches and terraces, then there’s just a short hike to the top. If you have booked the Game of Thrones tour or Dubrovnik City Pass, it’s already included – and you’ll learn a bit more about the location and Dubrovnik history!

11. KAYAKING IN DUBROVNIK CROATIA!

Kayaking is a fun way of seeing the old town of Dubrovnik and all its surroundings right from the blue Adriatic! It’s one of the most popular activities to do and only takes around 2.5 hours of your time, which covers a great view of Lokrum Island and Batina Cave for swimming.

I went on a morning kayak tour to beat the midday sun (I don’t recommend an afternoon tour – it’s busy and hot!). You are equipped with a dry bag and there’s a choice of double or single kayaks, I found the pace easy, all you have to do is follow the leader and enjoy the scenery!

Tip! Wear a long-sleeved top to go under your life jacket, it will be more comfortable, a swim/sunblock one is best!

12. VISIT DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN’S BANJE BEACH

Just a short stroll from Ploce Gate, Beach Banje is Dubrovnik old town’s proper and closest beach; there’s no concrete to be found anywhere! It’s located right on the edge of the town with fantastic views across to Lokrum Island, you’ll be blown away with your beach bed view – definitely one of the best places to relax in Dubrovnik!

The water here is surprisingly crystal clear and the beach is made up of small white stone (which makes the sea clear!). There is a public area and a beach club area, I prefer to rent a sunbed right along the water’s edge in the early morning (10am) for an unobstructed view and before it fills up! In May and mid-September, it is tranquil and lush, the restaurant terrace is also nice for drinks or lunch – but service can be hit and miss!

13. HAVE LUNCH AT GRADSKA KAVANA ARSENAL

The old town in Dubrovnik has no shortage of great terrace options for lunch with a view and the sea breeze. I highly recommend Grandska Kavana Arsenal is located right on the old town harbour, a perfect spot for watching the harbour activity with a lovely scenic backdrop!

You’ll need to reserve in advance and be sure to grab a front row table; they are usually the first to go! I also recommend this spot for a posh breakfast, they have a tiered option, which is fabulous and you can order it until 11.30am – this is one of the best restaurants in Dubrovnik!

14. WATCH THE SUNSET ON THE CITY WALLS

If you’re looking for a unique experience, try the hidden bars along the city’s walls, Buza Bar’s (there’s two) can be found at the top of Jesuit Staircase along the back of the wall. They are simple hole-in-the-wall bars with a stunning Adriatic view, especially at sunset!

For a more elevated experience, I definitely prefer Fratellos Processco Bar – it’s the best bar in Dubrovnik with three levels, sweeping seaviews and a lovely ambience! Instead of bottles, fish nets and plastic chairs, you’ll get jazz and a selection of great cocktails! I found this gem just 10-minutes outside of Pile Gate. Do not miss it!

15. GO ON A SCENIC BOAT TRIP

Finally, when staying in the old town in Dubrovnik, I 100% recommend this boat trip from the town harbour. It takes you around the Elaphiti Islands in a private speedboat, which is by far the best way to enjoy it (a lot of the group boat tours are overcrowded with limited sightseeing options, I went on the three-island tour once and it really didn’t wow me)!

Our day out on the private boat was an incredible experience, away from the bustle and surrounded by nature, secluded bays, caves and the clearest water for swimming. We also opted for wine tasting and a stop at gorgeous BOWA private beach, you can totally customise this tour, a boat trip will easily fit into your 3 day itinerary!

TIPS FOR VISITING DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

When To Visit Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik is best explored from May to early June or mid-September, avoiding the peak season (July and August) and crowds. If you’re visiting the old town in Dubrovnik for the day, early morning or late afternoon is ideal. The streets are quieter, the light is gorgeous for photos, and you’ll miss the peak cruise ship hours.

How Long To Stay In Dubrovnik

If Dubrovnik old town is your base, I recommend a minimum of 3 days in Dubrovnik, you can see the highlights listed above in a day (the boat trip will be day 3). However, there’s many incredible things to do outside of the old town walls, such as heritage towns, beaches, islands and more that justify at least 5 nights!

Dubrovnik City Pass

Grab the Dubrovnik City Pass if you’re staying in Dubrovnik for 1-2 days or more, it includes the city walls walk, Fort Lovrijenac, transport, galleries and museums. It’s well worth purchasing if you’re going to be visiting these attractions, the city walls alone is €40!

Dubrovnik Old Town Dress Codes

The old town in Dubrovnik is a classy place! Walking shirtless or in swimwear through the old town is disrespectful and can even earn you a fine and some strange looks! Cover up when you’re not on the beach or a boat!

Parking In Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik Centre Parking is €24 per day or €3 per hour, it is a 25-minute walk to Dubronvik old town, this is the best and least costly option. Near Dubrovnik old town there are park and display bays at Ploce or Pile Gate from €10 per hour.

Bring Cash & Cards

While Croatia uses the euro now, many small cafés and market stalls in the old city still prefer cash or may have minimum spends for cards. Cash is King as they say in Croatia!

WHERE TO STAY IN DUBROVNIK OLD TOWN

Staying inside Dubrovnik old town means you’ll wake up surrounded by centuries of history – cobbled lanes, baroque churches, and lively cafés right on your doorstep. The style of accommodation within the walls is boutique with lots of charm and character!

If you’d prefer more space, sea views, or easier access to beaches, look just outside the walls in Ploče or Pile – both are only a short walk from the Old Town but have more hotel options.
