Hvar is a hotspot in Croatia, a stunning island to visit with some of the best scenery around! Its appeal lies in the pine-covered mountain terrain, crystal clear waters, authentic heritage towns, vineyards and the jewel of the island, glam Hvar Town – it really is the full package!

There are some lovely areas to stay in Hvar and no shortage of quality accommodation that will make your visit even more incredible, whether you opt for the main hub Hvar Town or a smaller quaint village or even a private villa!

In this post, I’ll share my best finds, from top hotels to beautiful suites with stunning sea-view balconies. I’ve travelled to Hvar Island dozens of times since 2012, it’s my favourite island in the Med, so you can be sure only the best will be highlighted!

Hvar Town is the island’s best-known and most beautifully located historic town in Croatia and possibly the Mediterranean – it’s long been my favourite place to stay! The entire town is nestled in a picturesque cove with high mountains, a fortress and a historic Venetian-built square.

Amongst all the scenery, you will fill your time enjoying the bustling restaurants, walking along the glamorous Riviera or hiking up narrow steps leading to spectacular viewpoints! If you’re looking for atmosphere, a long promenade, a small beach club or two and quick access to many other little islands then Hvar Town’s your best place to stay in Hvar Croatia!

Hotel Moeesy

Hotel Moeesy, a stylish new coastal retreat set within beautiful grounds – this romantic five-star property offers three sea-facing swimming pools, a lovely garden, sauna and multiple sea-view luxurious terraces. It’s an updated hotel, just a ten-minute stroll to the old town centre – truly the most idyllic beach location imaginable! By far one of the best boutique hotels in Hvar, perfect for couples!

Beach Bay Hvar Hotel

Beach Bay Hvar, a chic boutique hotel in Hvar on the quieter side of town with fresh neutral decor and balconies overlooking an attractive bay and Franciscan Monastery. If you’re looking for a seafront location, Beach Bay Hotel hits the mark – we stopped here when it first opened and recommend the double room with sea view – what a view!

Palace Elisabeth Hotel

Palace Elisabeth Hotel, an iconic and sophisticated 5 star hotel in Hvar on the attractive square with harbour views. It is the grandest hotel in Hvar, a 13th-century palace with Venetian architecture and marble interiors! It offers a top-rated restaurant and beautiful rooftop terrace, pool and spa – a stay here would be an incredible experience!

Adriana Spa Hotel

Adriana Spa Hotel is a stylish and luxurious hotel in Hvar overlooking the picturesque harbour! Rooms are spacious and minimalist, and to relax, guests have access to a rooftop pool, lounge, and spa. There’s also a wonderful Mediterranean restaurant with excellent service! You are very well looked after at this pampering and romantic Hvar Hotel!

Riva Marina Hvar Hotel

Riva Marina Hvar Hotel is set within a prime spot on the vibrant Riva with lovely sea views! The interiors blend charm and modern elegance, creating a stylish and relaxing stay, perfect for couples looking for a luxurious getaway! One of the best features is the waterfront terrace and cool bar, I’ve enjoyed this spot many times – watching the yachts at sunset!

Heritage Hotel Park Hvar

Heritage Hotel Park Hvar is an affordable luxury hotel situated in the same spot as Palace Elisabeth at the end of the vibrant Riva with lovely harbour views. It boasts elegant rooms with sea views and super popular restaurant and terrace decorated with bright flowers, it’s a great spot night and day, I love the live jazz in the evenings!

Hvar Top View Apartments, a stylish and modern hideaway in Hvar Town, just minutes from the bustle while offering a quiet retreat with incredible sweeping views of the Pakleni Islands! I stopped here in 2022 and chose the wonderful double balcony room, it’s well worth the upgrade – if this room is available, just book it!

Good Vibrations Apartment

Good Vibrations, a stunning and spacious one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Hvar Town with top-quality furnishings and amenities. Recent renovations feature two bathrooms and a gorgeous balcony terrace overlooking the mountains and fortress. It’s quite incredible and comes highly recommended!

Best places to stay in Hvar Stari Grad – Hvar Islands charming old town!

STARI GRAD

Stari Grad is the best area to stay in Hvar for charm and relaxation, it’s the cultural pared-back version of Hvar Town – 35 minutes away by car. It is best known for its rich history and its cobbled and rustic centre, where you’ll enjoy long lunches, local wine, and wandering between boutique shops and picturesque squares.

It’s a lovely authentic area and Stari Grad Plain has lavender fields and olive groves, but it lacks the dramatic scenery, stunning Riva and coastal walk of glam Hvar Town. However there’s less accommodation, lower prices and it is relatively tourist-free throughout the day!

Maslina Resort

Maslina Resort a beautiful nature-filled resort on the west coast of Stari Grad designed for a tranquil stay. At Maslina you will receive five-star service and enjoy top facilities, including a spa, two pools and a lovely lounge deck and each room includes a balcony. If you’re looking for the top hotel with relaxation in mind book Maslina!

Places Hvar Hotel

Places Hvar Hotel is a lovely modern and boho vibe resort in Stari Grad set on a stunning beach promenade with sun loungers and a sea-facing pool. Features include tennis courts, bar and terrace and popular restaurant. Guests can catch the water taxi – five minutes to the centre of Stari Grad!

Town House Rosario

Town House Rosario,  a traditional stone house boutique in the heart of Stari Grad Hvar with 5 lovely rooms to choose from and stone wall features, modern facilities and charm! This is where I stopped for one night and had a great experience; it’s super central in the atmospheric old town.

Revelin Hvar

Revelin Hvar, an immaculate 5-bedroomed stone house situated in a historic location in Stari Grad with high-end details and earthy-toned furnishings. It’s a great place for a relaxed and independent stay, just moments from the waterfront and restaurants.

Dolce Terra

Dolce Terra, a tranquil and luxurious 3-bedroomed stone villa with stunning terrace and pool set within a scenic location. It’s beautifully designed with upscale amenities and boho-luxe quality – definitely my pick of Stari Grad properties for groups – you can’t beat it!

JELSA

Jelsa is a hidden gem on the North of the Island of Hvar, an rural area surrounded by nature, including mountains, vineyards and natural beaches backed by pine trees.

It is the best place to stay in Hvar for nature lovers, you can spend your days hiking, swimming or cycling through the vineyards! Some of the best places to stay include apartments and villas, which make it perfect for families and a tranquil escape!

Casa Barbiere

Casa Barbiera, a stunning, well-decorated new villa within walking distance to the village of Jelsa! Guests love the seasonal swimming pool and terraces, the style is amazing and there’s three bedrooms suitable for groups!

Villa Riva

Villa Riva, is a beautiful stone-walled villa with charming blue shutters offering a range of rooms right on the waterfront with lovely views. I recommend upgrading to the double deluxe room with a sea view – it’s perfect for romantic couples!

Sea View Apartment

Sea View Apartment, a fantastic family apartment with two bedrooms and bunk beds and lots of space to relax and enjoy the sea view from balcony! Every room has been thoughtfully decorated to a high standard and it has all the mod-cons and amenities for a great stay next to the harbour and town!

Best places to stay in Hvar Vbroska – Hvar’s canal gem!

VRBOSKA

Vrboska is situated to the north coast of Hvar, the part of the island with rolling hills and scenery, it’s the best place to stay in Hvar for those looking for hidden gems and to see another side of the island for a couple of nights!

This ancient village is known for its numerous bridges and canals and cobbled lanes, it’s pretty to walk around and visit, some of the best beaches in Hvar are not far from Vrboska, and Hvar Town is 35 minutes away. Vbroska is super quiet, so I recommend short stays, also there are few accommodation options!

Apartment Marin

Apartment Marin, a spacious one-bedroomed apartment with a terrace next to the beach of Vbroska, one of the best on Hvar Island. It is modern, stylish and light-filled, lovely for a short stay in the area!

House Tia

House Tia, a two-bedroomed traditional stone house in the heart of Vbroska with plenty of space and modern interiors and amenities for groups or families. It is a lovely home – a taste of Dalmatian life and there’s some nice beaches just a stones throw away!

Plage Cache Glamping

Plage Cache Glamping, is for those open to a luxurious glamping experience while staying on Hvar Island! Each of the 4 luxury tents are fully equipped with private bathrooms and decking areas as well as boho-luxe furnishings. You’ll be situated amongst the pine trees on the edge of a lovely tranquil beach cove – around 10-minutes from Vbroska town.

Casa M Hvar is just a short dive from Hvar Town and is by far the best villa for groups on Hvar Island!!

WHEN TO VISIT HVAR

The best time to visit Hvar Island is the shoulder months of May to early June and September to early October. The best areas to stay in Hvar will be crowd-free and the weather will be warm and sunny, but not hot hot – plus the beaches in Hvar will be lovelier!

WHEN TO BOOK HOTELS

Hvar is a very popular and busy island! I recommend booking accommodation for peak season travel well in advance, basically as early as possible! Earlier means more options and not getting stuck with an overpriced apartment – the best places to stay on Hvar Island fill fast!

HOW MANY DAYS IN HVAR

Hvar is a stunning island, the best in the Mediterranean, so ideally to do it justice 5 days minimum is the perfect amount of time to see the highlights including exploring the nearby Pakleni Islands and crystal clear waters!

LOCATION IS IMPORTANT

Location is extremely important when deciding where to stay on Hvar Island. Due to the mountains and winding roads, the distances are much further apart between towns than they look on a map! Hvar Town to Stari Grad is 35 minutes by bus. Other areas like Jelsa, Vbroska and Sveta Nedjelja in the mountains really require a car!

PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION

In recent years, there has been an influx of boutique hotels in Hvar due to a surge in popularity, however, there are still more apartments to rent (especially in Hvar Town) and most are privately owned!

Note: It’s common to find condo’s and converted houses of locals rather than business-owned – and you can get some great deals for longer stays this way.

HOW TO GET TO HVAR

Split is the major transfer hub for getting to Hvar and there 3 direct ways to get from Split to Hvar including; ferries, car ferries and private transfers.

Ferries

Ferries leave Split port several times per day in the peak summer months from 8.30am until 19.30pm, the quickest time is 50-minutes.

Car Ferry

The Jadrolinija car ferry leaves from Split port to Stari Grad (Hvar Old Town) 6 times per day between 5am and 20.20pm.

Private Transfer

Private transfers take 1 hour and includes a private car transfer from Split Airport to the port and private speedboat that accommodates 4 people with luggage – door to door luxury service at any time!

GETTING AROUND HVAR

Getting around Hvar and the small towns is quite simple!

Walking

In the towns, you can walk around easily without any transport, in Hvar Town, you can walk to the Fortress, beaches, Riva and coastline!

Public Transport

Public transport – local buses link Hvar Town, Stari Grad and Jelsa, it is affordable and offers a regular schedule in peak summer months. Hvar Town’s bus station is conveniently located behind the cathedral.

Car Rental

Car rentals or mopeds can be a convenient way of travelling around Hvar Island for longer stays – book well in advance for summer!

Taxi

Taxi’s are available on Hvar island – at Stari Grad ferry port and Hvar Town – outside of the old town near the Cathedral, there isn’t many and they are pricey!

Yes! Hvar is worth staying, it’s stunning and there’s lots to explore and do, I recommend 5 nights or more, a day trip from Split to Hvar is possible, but only if you are very short on time!

How long to stay in Hvar Croatia?

You could easily spend a week or more exploring Hvar Island, it has a lot to offer and is one of the most beautiful islands in Europe. I’ve stopped here multiple times for no less than 5 nights, but even that feels too short!

I know many visitors will be day-tripping or island-hopping as part of a bigger itinerary, but a few days is not enough to experience it fully, a week would do it justice!
