A Complete Guide To Where To Stay On Vis Island Croatia: Top Areas & Best Hotels In Vis!!

Overview Of Vis Island Croatia

Vis Island is part of the Dalmatia Islands chain in the Adriatic Sea, between the popular coastal cities of Split and Dubrovnik.

It is the furthest island from the shoreline of Split and neighbours vibrant Hvar, by comparison, Vis is a hidden gem, a peaceful island away from mass tourism, which makes it all the more alluring!

The four most popular areas on the island of Vis, which I will cover in this post are are Vis Town, Kut Village, Milna and Komiza!

How To Get To Vis Island Croatia

How to get to Vis Island depends on the rest of your Croatian itinerary!

If you are island hopping the two islands that you can get to and from are Brac and Hvar, the ferries depart a few times per week and Vis would be a great addition!!

However, if you were only travelling to Vis Island then flying into Split International Airport is the most common method with a few nights in Split before heading to Vis Island on the direct ferry, which departs several times per day!

Vis is a small island and does not have an airport!

Where To Stay On Vis Island Croatia: Breakdown By Area

Now that you have a feel for the island and how to get there, let’s get into the different areas and the best hotels in Vis to stay!

Vis is divided into a few main towns and villages around the island, and they are relatively close to each other, but tricky to get to due to lack of transport. For this reason, I highly recommend staying in an area with amenities and renting a boat or car to get around the island!!

Vis Town: Lively Port & Harbour

The first place we’ll cover is Vis Town! Vis Town is the main area on Vis Island, it’s where the harbour is and ferry port and will be your first arrival point to the island of Vis!

It leaves a fantastic first impression! Sweeping mountain views, small green islands dotting the sea and a lovely harbour to stroll with grand Venetian buildings and gleaming white yachts!

It sounds fancy and it is – Vis Town is the most upmarket place on Vis Island with a few nice bars, quality accommodations and restaurants. It’s also the primary departure point for the top boat tours in Vis.

If you stay here you will literally be able to walk to your accommodation and grab taxi boats, a bus to Komiza and even organise a car or taxi, it’s very easy and this is one of the reasons why I stopped here, the location is extremely convenient!

Kut Village: Charming Old Town

Historic Kut is a charming village situated at the end of the Vis Town harbour both places follow on from each other!

Kut is really the cultural heart of Vis Town and my top hotel choice San Giorgio Hotel is located there. It offers all the cutesy things: cobble-stoned paths, wrought iron balconies and up-market restaurants with candle-lit courtyards.

At the eastern side of Kut there’s a popular pebbly beach in Vis called Grandovac, which offers a nice relaxing spot and nearby there are local taverns and the attractive Restaurant Boccadoro, probably the best restaurant on the island of Vis!

Overall, Kut Village is a great place to stay if you want to be near a couple of the best beaches in Vis, a few nice places to eat and be within walking distance of the up-market harbour promenade- a lovely strolling spot!!

Komiza: Old Town & Mountain Scenery

Komiza is a pretty fisherman’s village just a 20-minute bus or car journey away from Vis Town (and vice-verse), but with a completely different feel!

The village of Komiza sits at the foothills of Mountain Hum and the landscape is very dramatic, the scenery is reason enough to spend some time in this town!

Along with the scenery you can find a few small pebble beaches at either side of a horseshoe bay with taverns and old stone townhouses and terraces, it’s certainly an attractive area of Vis Island.

The whole area is very picturesque, Komiza is a nice place to stop for a couple of nights, which is what I did!

Milna: Small Town & Luxury Villas

Last but not least we have Milna, Milna is a small bay and village situated on the southern side of the island of Vis in Croatia, it’s just 9 km away from the Town of Vis, but it could be a world away!

Milna is a place to go and get away from it all, you’ll be surrounded by nature and some of the best sand and pebble beaches in Vis such as Zaglav, the panoramic sea views are beautiful.

Milna is known for its natural environment and for hosting some amazing luxury apartments and villa rentals for groups and families, it’s a lovely spot to relax and rent a boat to see other nearby islands and stunning beaches and phenomena like the Blue Cave!

Note: Croatia is not known for its sandy beaches, however, the tiny pebbles at Komiza aren’t too bad on your feet. If you’re looking for a sandy beach, check out Milna area or hire a boat for beach hopping!
