If you’re looking for the best things to do in Trogir Old Town, this charming UNESCO-listed coastal gem is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Croatia, packed with history, scenery and atmosphere!

Trogir Old Town is one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Croatia, with incredible architecture, a Riviera full of palm trees, and enticing restaurant terraces and while it’s often visited as a day trip from Split, staying overnight or longer is a wonderful experience!

It’s one of my favourite spots in the region. I absolutely love the picturesque setting and relaxed atmosphere, where you can happily wander the cobbled lanes, have long lunches on the vibrant waterfront, and beach-hop around the Blue Lagoon!

Whether you’re staying in Trogir or visiting for a day, this charming UNESCO-listed town is well worth exploring along the Dalmatian coast, here’s the top things to do in Trogir Old Town!

BEST THINGS TO DO IN TROGIR OLD TOWN

1. WANDER THE NARROW MEDIEVAL STREETS

Trogir Old Town is a heritage gem, surrounded by the bright turquoise sea, with a cool drawbridge entrance to the mainland, which makes it feel like a little island, and being pedestrianised only adds to the charm!

It has the same appearance as many heritage towns along the Dalmatian coast, with its familiar stone houses, green shutters and heritage sights, even Dubrovnik Old Town, only on a much smaller and cuter scale, and one of the best things to do in Trogir is get lost among the cobbled passages!

You can easily find quiet corners and gems such as the gorgeous FRANKA restaurant along one of the best-looking cobbled lanes, which is still my favourite spot in Trogir Old Town for lunch or dinner!

2. CLIMB THE BELL TOWER OF ST LAWRENCE CATHEDRAL

The centre of Trogir Old Town is absolutely layered with history and crumbly historic buildings, and the most prominent is St Lawrence Cathedral, right in the heart of the main square, which is the tallest structure in town and one you cannot miss!

It’s usually the busiest landmark, but it’s still worth going inside to explore the Cathedral’s ancient interiors and climb up to the top of the bell tower for the best panoramic view across the orange rooftops and square below!

The bell tower, similar to the one in Split’s Diocletian’s Palace, is the real reason to get excited about the cathedral; it’s the best thing to do in Trogir Old Town square, and you’ll come away with incredible photos!

3. ADMIRE THE CLOCK TOWER ON THE PIAZZA

Trogir’s Piazza is the town’s central social hub, where everyone seems to gather, and it’s one of the most beautiful and buzzy places to spend time, surrounded by heritage sites and restaurant terraces!

As well as the Cathedral, there’s also the Clock Tower opposite with its iconic blue dial – you get a cracking view of it from the Bell Tower, but one of the best ways to enjoy this atmospheric square is to take a seat at Corte Bar for coffee and a spot of people watching!

It actually feels like you’re in Italy, and if you are visiting in the morning, definitely grab an almond croissant and absorb the lovely setting from your royal blue chair!

Hot Tip! If your base is Split, I recommend visiting Trogir Old Town on your third day, it’s so easy to slot into your Split itinerary and this guide shows you how!

4. PEEK INTO THE HISTORIC MONASTERY

Very surprisingly, little Trogir even has its own Benedictine Monastery, which is a thousand years old and holds a few things worthy of a quick look, including a cute church, a tranquil courtyard and a museum, although there aren’t many artefacts to boast about – you might be better off at the actual Museum of Trogir.

This is one of the quietest cultural landmarks, as I don’t think many visitors know it exists! But, it’s worth checking out if you want to see more of Trogir’s history and keep your eye out for Kairos – a symbol for good luck in Trogir!

5. VISIT THE CITY MUSEUM OF TROGIR

The Trogir Museum is housed in a palace and showcases the town’s main artefacts and cultural exhibits dating back to the 3rd century, making it the place to be for history buffs or anyone wanting to delve a little deeper into the town’s history.

But don’t feel bad if you skip it and save all your museum-going for the bigger events in Dubrovnik Old Town, if that’s where you’re headed, I think you can get heritage burnout, so pace yourself!

6. STAY IN THE BEST HOTEL IN TROGIR

A real highlight of Trogir is staying in a boutique hotel on the waterfront and waking up to a beautiful view with peaceful surroundings every morning – and being the first to explore or sip coffee before trippers arrive!

I highly recommend two or three nights to really enjoy the slower pace this heritage town brings and it’s a wonderful place to come back to after exploring the Dalmatia coast, I’ve stopped here twice before and love it as a base, it feels authentic and is just utterly charming!

Brown Beach House is an unbeatable hotel to stay with a stylish pool, elegant rooms and spacious terrace, I particularly liked the gorgeous coastal setting – from my personal sun lounger, you’ll have a wonderful experience here!

7. SHOP IN ARTISAN BOUTIQUES & GALLERIES

Amongst the narrow alleyways and squares of Trogir Old Town, you’ll find lots of tiny hidden-gem boutique shops and artisan stalls filled with all sorts of handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, and Croatian art souvenirs!

And along the Riviera, there’s Trogir’s main open-air market and individual stalls with art, all the usual lavender products and more – you’ll definitely come away with something here, and it helps the small community!

8. CHECK OUT GOTHIC CIPIKO PALACE

Just to the west of the Plaza, you’ll spot this striking Gothic building and popular attraction, which is the Cipiko Palace, a 15th-century building and the former home of a noble family of the same name, who have truly left their mark on the square!

Unfortunately, this building is not actually open to the public, but it’s still worth checking out on your wander around the town, it’s one of the best looking examples of Gothic workmanship, with its intricate carved windows!

9. STROLL ALONG THE STUNNING WATERFRONT (one of the best things to do in Trogir)

Trogir’s waterfront is lined with palm trees, yachts and buzzing restaurant terraces. It stretches the length of the old town, and there are some cool entry points via huge ancient doors joining the passageways to the pretty Riviera!

It’s one of the most picturesque settings in Dalmatia, similar to Hvar Town and Cavtat, and my favourite thing to do is walk along the prom for sunset and coastal views, admiring the sparkling blue sea and gorgeous Venetian architecture, the atmosphere is fantastic!

Boat tours also leave from the waterfront, which is convenient for exploring nearby scenic islands and the dreamy Blue Lagoon – a must-do in this area!!

If you want to know more about the Blue Lagoon, view the best boat tour from Trogir here!

10. VISIT KAMERLENGO FORTRESS FOR PANORAMIC VIEWS

If you want to see the best view over the Riva you must visit Kamerlengo Castle, which sits at the top end of Trogir’s Riviera, past the palm trees and offers sweeping views over the town and mountains beyond, it really gives you a better sense of your location!

Even though the castle itself is an empty ruin with not much to see inside, the views and observatory level more than make up for it, but you will have to climb up some actual ladders through a narrow opening first, so remember to wear shorts and trainers to save your blushes!

11. CHOOSE YOUR GELATO FLAVOUR AT BAR BELLA

A stroll in the early evening isn’t the same without a gelato from Bar Bella, the best proper homemade gelato bar in town, popular with locals and tourists alike and the best thing to do in Trogir or anywhere in Croatia after a hot summer’s day!

It’s not fancy, just a little hole in the wall place near the entrance to the old town with a pink bicycle parked outside, and there’s always a small queue, but it’s worth the wait, I highly recommend a scoop of the pistachio, fig and ricotta, don’t miss it if you’re craving a gelato!

12. EAT IN THE BEST RESTAURANT IN TROGIR OLD TOWN

If you’re looking for a fantastic place to eat, FRANKA is the best restaurant in Trogir Old Town in my experience and a must-visit for cosy lunches or atmospheric dinners!

FRANKA is a family-run hidden gem offering a Dalmatian and Mediterranean menu in a pretty setting along a quiet cobbled lane, tucked away from the main thoroughfare. I particularly like the evening ambience and super fresh tuna steak with Croatian wine!

And not only does this restaurant create amazing dishes, but it also provides stylish accommodation, you can read the write-up in my ” Where to Stay in Trogir guide“!

13. HAVE SUNSET COCKTAILS AT DIONIS ON THE RIVIERA

Grab an egg chair and settle down for the sunset with an Aperol Spritz on the attractive terrace of restaurant Dionis right on the waterfront, it’s one of the best things to do in Trogir Old Town in the evening, the Riva is super vibrant at this time!

Dionis feels very Mediterranean, surrounded by Venetian architecture, palm trees and turquoise sea, which is really beautiful (see below). You can sit here for hours and relax, the service is so laid back, and it’s never too busy! (Plus, you can watch all the people in their yachts!)

14. TAKE A SCENIC BOAT TRIP TO THE BLUE LAGOON

Any trip to Trogir or visit to the region is vastly improved with a trip to the Blue Lagoon, it’s totally unique and a real highlight of the area, and you can take a half-day boat trip right from Trogir’s harbour!

I’ve previously booked this boat tour from Split and really enjoyed the sights and scenery, especially swimming in private beach coves and recommend it for those who love exploring crowd-free picturesque islands with the most vivid blue sea!

From Trogir this half day Blue Lagoon trip is all you need to experience the magic of the Blue Lagoon, the most convenient and scenic excursion with views to die for!

Check availability & book the half-day Blue Lagoon boat tour from Trogir here!

15. SWIM & SUNBATHE AT LAGANINI BEACH CLUB

Once you’ve explored all the attractions of Trogir Old Town, I recommend spending some time relaxing at the best boho-luxe beach club on Ciovo Island, Laganini, just a short 10-minute taxi ride away across the bridge!

Laganini Beach Club is the best place to go to for luxury lounging by the sea, it’s my personal favourite spot, I especially like the dreamy white decor, I’ve visited a few times in the morning, just as it opens at 10am, to pick the best seats and enjoy the quiet moments before the afternoon crowds arrive, it’s so beautiful – see the set-up below!

You can actually book a cabana in advance if you’re going to be there a while or just turn up for drinks and a casual swim, even some boat tours from Split come and visit this spot after island-hopping!

Trogir’s Old Town is fully pedestrianised, so you won’t be able to park here, but there are parking lots outside the old town, just a 10-minute walk away and if you’re staying here, I recommend a hotel on Ciovo Island, where there’s hotel parking.

When To Visit Trogir

The main time to visit Trogir is between May and September, but for the best experience, great weather and fewer crowds, I recommend May-June or September. Personally, I prefer the beginning of summer, when the evenings are lighter, the beaches are just opening up, and you can visit the Croatian Islands!
