3 Days In Split Croatia: A Perfect Split Itinerary!

Last updated on February 26th, 2026 at 01:49 am

If you’re wondering how to spend 3 days in Split, here’s the perfect Split itinerary covering the iconic sights, scenery and hidden gems I’m sharing for anyone who wants to make the most of their stay in this incredible city!

Split is known as the gateway to the islands, and it’s one of the places in Croatia where I’ve spent a lot of time, due to the convenient airport and easy access to Hvar, Vis and Korcula Islands, the most popular in Dalmatia (and my personal favourites), but also because this city is beautiful and vibrant!

You can easily spend 3 days in Split getting to know the old town, Diocletian’s Palace, palm-tree-lined Riviera and nearby sights such as heritage towns, waterfalls and nature parks, Split is certainly worthy of three days or longer before heading off to the islands!

I’ve put together this perfect Split itinerary, to show you how to spend your three days and maximise your time – this is exactly what I would do if I were visiting for the first time. You’ll definitely have a wonderful start to your Croatia trip!

WHERE TO STAY FOR 3 DAYS IN SPLIT CROATIA

For three days in Split, the best place for you to stay is the Old Town, including the Riva and Marjan Hill, they are all incredibly convenient bases with beautiful settings where you can easily wander to the city’s main sights and stay in the best accommodation (the boutique hotels are especially fantastic here), choosing the right spot can totally elevate your itinerary!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 1

Explore Diocletian’s Palace & Old Town

One of the best ways to begin your 3 days in Split is by exploring UNESCO Diocletian’s Palace in the Old Town, it’s the real heart and soul of Split, where all the bustle and atmosphere takes place, I would describe it as a ‘living Palace museum’, as nowadays it’s filled with shops, restaurants and beautiful boutique hotels.

Diocletian’s Palace itself is not massive, but it is impressive to look at and wander around, straight away the first thing that will grab your attention is the Cathedral and Bell Tower, which you can climb for incredible Old Town views, a must-do in my opinion and while your there, grab a drink on one of the terraces and watch all the bustle unfold with an excellent view – I love doing this!

My favourite part of Diocletian’s Palace is the Peristyle, a must-see central square with impressive Roman columns and arches – and a few creepy cellars underneath. This is all that remains of the original Palace, so if you were expecting an actual palace, you might be disappointed, as there’s not even a drop of gold here!

If you want to split your time between wandering the cobbles and getting to know the real city’s history, I can’t recommend this short guided walking tour enough, it’s especially good for first-time visitors who want to delve into the Roman past and discover the gems; it really brings it all to life!

Have Lunch at Uje Oil

After a couple of hours exploring the old town and climbing up the bell tower, it’s time for a fantastic lunch at Uje Oil, a family-run olive oil bar and restaurant in the heart of the atmospheric old town!

Split has a great restaurant and cafe scene and some of the settings are just as impressive as the food, Uje Oil Restaurant is in the middle of a picturesque cobbled street, I stumbled upon it on one of my wanders and every table was full!

They have a great-looking menu and make some of the best fig and ricotta flat bread I’ve tasted and not only that, but you can also do some local wine tastings here, I have eaten here many times – always ordering the same thing, but I don’t regret it, it’s so tasty!

Stroll Along Riva Promenade

After lunch or drinks, find your way back through Diocletian’s Palace and the Peristyle, where you’ll exit at the main Bronze Gate to the Riva and start of the gorgeous promenade, which leads you to Marjan Hill, this is my favourite place for strolling, it’s much more breezy and less intense than the Palace!

Split’s Riva is super attractive and lined with grand Venetian buildings, palm trees and snazzy restaurant terraces, there’s always a real buzz in the air and aside from the restaurants, there’s also sunny benches to sit and gaze at the sea – without paying for anything – see below pic!

The Riva is also another desirable area to stay in Split and one of my personal favourites, it captures the best of both worlds in terms of stunning location and sightseeing, inevitably you’ll likely end up on this Riva front a few times during your 3 days in Split, especially for sunset drinks and breakfasts – more on that next!

Visit Colourful Republic Square

Before you reach Marjan Hill, take a walk around Republic Square to the right (also known as Trg Republike) you can’t miss this huge space, especially as the colourful buildings really stand out, infact it wouldn’t look out of place in Italy!

It is one of the main squares in Split and often holds outdoor concerts in the summer, which transforms the area, but when there isn’t a performance, you’ll get to see the real surroundings!

Walk Up Marjan Hill Viewpoint

Marjan Hill is your last sight-seeing stop of the day, it’s situated at the end of the Riva and Republic Square, which boasts the best panoramic view over the old town and islands, but don’t worry, the walk is not that strenuous at all!

At this point in your Split itinerary, you will have already done plenty of walking around the main sights, but this viewpoint at the end is well worth making the extra bit of effort for, it’s one of my favourite tranquil spots of the city!

From the Riva, you can get to the top of Marjan Hill viewpoint in 10-15 minutes, depending on how many stops you make to take photos, there are views the whole way – and the sounds of birds and crickets, that’s something you don’t get in the old town!

As well at the panoramic view, you’ll also find Vidilica Terrace where you can reward yourself with a spritz – don’t miss this off your itinerary!

Early Evening Drinks At Olive Tree

Olive Tree is one of my favourite spots for an early evening drink along the Rivieria, I’ve spent many hours relaxing here by the waterfront with the perfect sea view and aesthetics, this place should be on everyone’s Split itinerary!

You’ll easily spot it in the centre of the Riva, it has Mediterranean looks and actual olive trees for decoration. I’ve sat here at all times of the day, even for coffee in the morning, but the evenings, especially near sunset is the most popular and vibrant time to go, it’s seriously one of the best things to do in Split if you’re just looking for a nice spot and a drink!

Evening Meal At Restaurant Zoi – Amazing Rooftop Terrace

After a little pre-drink at Olive Tree and all that walking in the daytime you are probably ravenous! I recommend a nice evening meal at Zoi, which is also on the Riva, but a rooftop terrace this time and one of the few in town – compared to Dubrovnik, there’s hardly any rooftops at all!

But as this is one of the few, and it’s your first night, this elegant terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a bit of Split hospitality away from the bustle and usual tourist restaurants. At Zoi, you’ll be presented with options from a set three-course menu. I loved the risotto – order it if it’s still on the menu and being on the coast, this restaurant specialises in fish dishes. You’ll have to reserve a table on the terrace, this restaurant is popular!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 2

Breakfast At Brasserie No 7 – Seaview Terrace

On the morning of your day 2 Split Croatia itinerary you should treat yourself to an amazing breakfast at Brasserie No 7 right along the best part of the Riva! Enjoy the seaview and flower-filled terrace as you dive into pancakes with fruit, egg-white omelettes, acai bowls, fresh coffee and more!

Brasserie No 7 is the best restaurant in Split Croatia, for breakfast! It has been a favourite of mine for a long time, it’s one of the reasons why I love visiting Split so much, I always include this terrace in my Split itinerary! It’s such an incredible start to the day and the breakfast menu runs until midday, so you can linger!!

Browse Pazar Market Stalls

After breakfast, head towards Split’s main open-air market – Pazar Market (also known as Green Market). You’ll find it just to the east wall of the Palace, it’s a great place to do a little souvenir shopping and the atmosphere is quite fun, you get to see a bit of the local life in action.

It’s open all day every Saturday and it sells all sorts from clothes to hats to honey and lavender-related things – Croatians LOVE lavender!

I’m not a huge shopper when away, but I did get the white dress that’s featured in many of the photos in this post, I’m often complimented on it! It was a great purchase, but don’t haggle, I tried this and was promptly told off!

Relax At Split Beaches

At this point in your 3 days in Split itinerary, you will already have seen the best things in the area, so I recommend hitting Split’s beaches for a few hours in the afternoon, depending on how you’re feeling!

Marjan Hill is a good spot for beaches, my favourite’s are Kasjuni Beach (featuring Jo’s beach club with cabanas for hire) and Kastelet Beach, which is quieter, but this all very much depends on the day and month you’re visiting!

You can catch the number 12 bus from the end of the Riva to Marjan Hill beaches or an €5 Uber. Alternatively, you can visit the best beach club in the area for a little luxury, Mistral beach and restaurant, which belongs to the Radisson Blu!

Not a beach fan? Head to the beautiful heritage town of Trogir from Split, it’s the easiest day trip and only 30 minutes away!!

Wine & Tapas At Bokeria

For your second evening, I highly recommend reserving a table at our favourite tapas restaurant in Split Croatia! Bokeria wine and tapas is phenomenal, the lush decor, ‘drinks wall’ and ambience are unbeatable!

Grab a table outside on the attractive patio with a lovely setting and order a few starters and tapas to share with an Aperol Spritz and definitely the homemade bread for a light meal. Honestly, it is so good I’ve been to this place multiple times and the evenings are particularly special!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 3

Take A Day Trip From Split To The Islands!

As day one and two of your 3 days in Split itinerary are centred around exploring the old town and Marjan Hill, a day trip to the islands is the perfect way to spend your last day in Split!

You have many options, and a lot of Croatian Islands at your disposal, but I recommend one of the below two best boat trips!

Option 1) Hvar & Pakleni Island Boat Trip

Hvar is a stunning island just an hour from Split, with the most glamorous town and Riviera. Truly, the whole area is postcard perfect, there’s plenty of charm in the cobbled old town and perfect beaches around the long promenade!

On our first visit to Split we booked this luxurious full day Hvar and Pakleni Islands boat trip and it was one of our most memorable experiences in Croatia!

The tour starts from Split’s harbour and we stopped in some of the most jaw-dropping locations in the Adriatic from Hvar’s Riviera Town to Palmizana, Mlini, MarkinKovac and many hidden secluded beach coves and swimming spots – all to ourselves, it was a magical day!

Our highlights included:

  • Hvar Fortress for panoramic views
  • Drinks and stylish Hvar Beach Club
  • Coastal walk to Falko Beach
  • Coffee at Park Hvar St Stephen’s Square
  • Lunch at Laganini Palmizana Island
  • Swimming at Mlini Bay
  • QUALITY speed boat with shade!!

If this is your only chance to visit the best island in Croatia, the scenic Hvar and Pakleni island luxury boat trip is the best way to do it – and I wouldn’t hesitate to book it again!! Here is my full review for how to plan a day trip Hvar from Split!

Option 2) Island-hopping Boat Tour From Split

Island-hopping around the gorgeous islands is one of the best Split day trips, it’s a perfect introduction to the islands if you want to maximise your time!

On this 5 Islands Boat Tour, you’ll visit Blue Cave, Vis Island’s Komiza (Mama Mia film location) and iconic Stiniva Beach, the Pakleni Islands and super glam Hvar Town, these really are the highlights of the area!

This full-day 11-hour island hopping excursion is excellent value for money – and you spend just enough time in each location, so if your aim is to see as much as possible this speed boat tour is the best option for you!

Each stop has a very different vibe, you get a good feel for the islands and a great sense of adventure on this tour. Side note; you will be exposed to the sea, sun and bumpy waves on this boat, but it’s also fun!

Pro Tip! One of the best things about this tour is the booking options; it provides private or group experiences (maximum 12), so everyone is satisfied!

Good To Know: This is a hugely popular small group tour, especially during the peak summer months. Book it in advance to secure your spot!

Finish With Drinks At Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar

After a full day of exploring and adventure with whichever day trip you end up choosing, you’ve earned a few drinks in Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar! I found this place buried in the old town and instantly loved it, the ambience is spot on!

If you’re looking for nightlife in Split Croatia, you can’t go wrong with this cool little jazz bar that sometimes has live jazz musicians! It’s super friendly and the drinks menu is excellent – the perfect way to end your 3 days in Split Croatia itinerary!!

When To Visit Split Croatia

Split is best from May until September, when the weather is glorious, and Riva is at its most vibrant! And there’s more to do in the summer, from alfresco dining to boat trips and beach days! July and August are the peak – super crowded months! AVOID the Ultra Festival.

Book your hotel in advance

Split is the most popular destination in Croatia, and the best boutique hotels often sell out months in advance – especially from June to August. I highly recommend booking early for the best choice, rates, and to be close to the old town for your 3 days in Split. See my full guide to where to stay in Split.

Book boat tours and day trips ahead in summer

From June to September, the best boat tours and day trips book out quickly. If island hopping or waterfalls are part of your plan, it’s worth securing spots in advance (I share my favourites in my Split day trips guide).

How To Get To Split Croatia

Split Airport is around 35 minutes from the Old Town by taxi, Uber or airport bus – or for a quick and easy journey, book a private transfer ahead of time!

How To Get Around Split Croatia

Everything in and around the Old Town, such as the Riva and Marjan Hill, is completely walkable; buses, taxis and cheap Ubers cover the beaches in Split easily. The bus station is at the end of the Riva opposite the port, for going slightly further afield.
