3 Days In Split Croatia: A Perfect Split Itinerary!

Last updated on April 1st, 2026 at 09:01 pm

If you’re wondering how to spend 3 days in Split, here’s the perfect Split itinerary covering the iconic sights, scenery and hidden gems I’m sharing for anyone who wants to make the most of their stay in this incredible city!

Split is known as the gateway to the islands, and it’s one of the places in Croatia where I’ve spent a lot of time, due to the convenient airport and easy access to Hvar, Vis and Korcula Islands, the most popular in Dalmatia (and my personal favourites), but also because this coastal city is beautiful and vibrant!

You can easily spend 3 days in Split getting to know the old town, Diocletian’s Palace, palm-tree-lined Riviera and nearby sights such as Trogir heritage town, Krka National Park or the stunning Blue Lagoon, Split is certainly worthy of three days or longer before heading off to the main islands!

I’ve put together this perfect Split itinerary, to show you how to spend your three days and maximise your time – this is exactly what I would do if I were visiting for the first time. You’ll definitely have a wonderful start to your Croatia trip!

WHERE TO STAY FOR 3 DAYS IN SPLIT CROATIA

For your three-day stay in Split, the best place for you to book accommodation is the Old Town, including the waterside Riva and Marjan Hill locations, which are unmatched for beautiful settings, boutique hotels and convenience – you’ll literally be a few minutes’ walk to the city’s main sights and everything I’ve mentioned in this Split itinerary!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 1

Explore Diocletian’s Palace & Old Town

The best way to begin your first day in Split is by exploring the main event, UNESCO Diocletian’s Palace in the Old Town, it’s the real cultural heart and soul of Split, where all the bustle and atmosphere takes place, I would describe it as a ‘living Palace museum’, as nowadays it’s filled with shops, restaurants and beautiful boutique hotels.

Diocletian’s Palace itself is not massive, but it is impressive to look at and wander around, straight away the first thing that will grab your attention is the Cathedral and Bell Tower, which you can climb for incredible Old Town views, a must-do in my opinion and while your there, grab a drink on one of the terraces and watch all the bustle unfold with an excellent view – I love doing this!

My favourite part of Diocletian’s Palace is the Peristyle, a must-see central square with impressive Roman columns and arches – and a few creepy cellars hidden underneath (since made into a Game of Thrones location). This is all that remains of the original Palace, so if you were expecting an actual palace, you might be disappointed, as there’s not even a drop of gold here!

If you want to split your time between wandering the cobbles and getting to know the real city’s history, I can’t recommend this short guided walking tour enough, it’s especially good for first-time visitors who want to delve into the Roman past and discover the gems; it really brings it all to life!

Have Lunch at Uje Oil

After a couple of hours exploring the old town and climbing up the bell tower, it’s time for a fantastic lunch at Uje Oil, a family-run olive oil bar and restaurant in the heart of the atmospheric old town!

Split has a great restaurant and cafe scene and some of the settings are just as impressive as the food, Uje Oil Restaurant is in the middle of a picturesque cobbled street, I stumbled upon it on one of my wanders and every table was full!

They have a great-looking menu and make some of the best fig and ricotta flat bread I’ve tasted and not only that, but you can also do some local wine tastings here, I have eaten here many times – always ordering the same thing, but I don’t regret it, it’s so tasty!

Stroll Along Riva Promenade

After lunch or drinks, find your way back through Diocletian’s Palace and the Peristyle, where you’ll exit at the main Bronze Gate to the Riva and start of the gorgeous promenade, which leads you to Marjan Hill, I love strolling along here with the sea breeze – and it’s less intense than the Palace!

Split’s Riva is super attractive and lined with grand Venetian buildings, palm trees and snazzy restaurant terraces, there’s always a real buzz in the air and aside from the restaurants, there’s also sunny benches to sit and gaze at the horizon – see the pic below, not a care in the world!

The Riva is also another desirable area to stay in Split and one of my personal favourites, it captures the best of both worlds in terms of stunning location and sightseeing, inevitably you’ll likely end up on this Riva front a few times during your 3 days in Split, especially for sunset drinks and breakfasts – more on that next!

Visit Colourful Republic Square

Before you reach Marjan Hill at the end of the Riva, take a walk around Republic Square to the right (also known as Trg Republike) you can’t miss this huge space, especially as the colourful buildings really stand out, in fact, it wouldn’t look out of place in Italy!

It is one of the main squares in Split and often holds outdoor concerts in the summer, which transforms the area, but when there isn’t a performance, you’ll get to see the real surroundings!

Walk Up Marjan Hill Viewpoint

Marjan Hill is your last sight-seeing stop of the day, it’s situated at the end of the Riva and Republic Square, which boasts the best panoramic view over the old town and islands, but don’t worry, the walk is not that strenuous at all!

At this point in your Split itinerary, you will have already done plenty of walking around the main sights, but this viewpoint at the end is well worth making the extra bit of effort for, it’s one of my favourite tranquil spots of the city!

From the Riva, you can get to the top of Marjan Hill viewpoint in 10-15 minutes, depending on how many stops you make to take photos, there are views the whole way – and the sounds of birds and crickets, that’s something you don’t get in the old town!

As well at the panoramic view, you’ll also find Vidilica Terrace where you can reward yourself with a spritz – don’t miss this off your itinerary!

Early Evening Drinks At Olive Tree

Olive Tree is one of my favourite terraces for an early evening drink along the Rivieria, I’ve spent many hours relaxing here by the waterfront with the perfect sea view and aesthetics, I think this place should be on everyone’s Split itinerary!

You’ll easily spot it in the centre of the Riva, it has Mediterranean looks and actual olive trees for decoration. I’ve sat here at all times of the day, even for coffee in the morning, but the evenings, especially near sunset is the most popular and vibrant time to go, it’s seriously one of the best things to do in Split if you’re just looking for a nice place to chill with a drink!

Dinner At Restaurant Zoi – Amazing Rooftop Terrace

After a little pre-drink at Olive Tree and all that walking in the daytime you are probably ravenous! I recommend a nice evening meal at Zoi, which is also on the Riva, but a romantic rooftop terrace this time and one of the few in town – compared to Dubrovnik, there’s hardly any rooftops at all!

But as this is one of the few, and it’s your first night, an elegant terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a bit of Split hospitality away from the bustle and usual tourist restaurants – you could easily go wrong in Split, there are so many choices!

At stylish Zoi, you’ll be presented with options from a set three-course menu. I loved the risotto, it was extremely well presented and being on the coast, this restaurant specialises in fish. You’ll have to reserve a table on the terrace, this restaurant is popular!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 2

Blue Lagoon & Island Hopping Boat Trip

After breakfast you’re going to head straight out on the water and explore the Blue Lagoon and smaller islands, which can only really be visited from Split, being just moments from the harbour, its the ideal half-day trip and break from the bustling city!

Blue Lagoon and the Azure-like waters are spectacular to see and swim, the natural islands are full of bays and hidden coves, it’s one of the more tranquil boat trips, and that’s the beauty of it! Just sit back and enjoy the effortless experience among scenic landscapes for a few hours – typically between 10am and 3pm!

This boat tour feels really special away from the crowds, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to spend your time after visiting the main sights of the old town, but you’ll need to book your spot in advance on this Blue Lagoon boat tour!

A boat trip is a must-do during 3 days in Split Croatia – see all my favourite private boat tours from Split

Relax At Split Beaches In the Late Afternoon

From your boat trip I imagine you’ll want to chillout for the rest of the day and unless you have a beach hotel in Split or a pool to go back to, I recommend grabbing a cab (it’s only a five-minute journey) to the attractive beach coves around Marjan Hill and enjoying the last couple of hours of the day by the sea!

Marjan Hill offers some of the best beaches in Split, just on the other side of the viewpoint, with an attractive backdrop of the nature park. My favourites are Kasjuni Beach (featuring Jo’s beach club with cabanas for hire) and Kastelet Beach, which is even more low-key, in the summer months you can stay until the early evening! Here’s my full guide to the best beaches of Split Croatia!

Evening Wine & Tapas At Bokeria

Bokeria Kitchen is one of the best experiences in Split for foodies or for anyone who appreciates a beautiful restaurant setting, well-presented food and bags of ambience! As far as I’m concerned, this restaurant is a must-visit, it quickly became one of my favourites, so much so that I stopped by two days in a row when I first discovered it!

It’s like a modern-day tavern, a real crowd-pleaser serving quality tapas day and night, I particularly like sitting on the outside terrace in the evenings by the enormous arched windows and inside is just as cool with an impressive Aperol Spritz wall and inviting decor, places like this are not easy to find in Split!

3 Days In Split Itinerary: Day 3

Breakfast At Brasserie No 7 – Seaview Terrace

For your third morning, I recommend a leisurely breakfast in the prettiest setting at Brasserie No 7, right along the best part of the Riva, I’ve always loved this spot! Enjoy the seaview and flower-filled terrace as you dive into pancakes with fruit, egg-white omelettes, acai bowls, fresh coffee and more!

Brasserie No 7 is popular, but if you go early, around 9.30-10am, the city is just waking up, which means it’s the perfect time of day to enjoy a coffee and all the best breakfast items you could wish for, which sets you up nicely for a more leisurely day ahead!

Take A Half-Day Trip To Gorgeous Trogir!

On your last day in Split I highly recommend visiting the UNESCO Heritage Town of Trogir, which is only 40 minutes away and one of the most rewarding and easiest day trips from Split! I have stopped in Trogir a few times instead of Split, it really is the most idyllic place you’ll see along the coastline!

I love the more relaxed, small-town vibe and sights including the beautiful Venetian town, Cathedral and prom, which rivals Split’s Riva, Trogir Old Town is truly attractive and it’s compact enough that you only need half a day to explore it all and stop for lunch, making it the ideal day trip!

You can visit Trogir from Split in several ways, including a quick taxi ride! For a detailed guide on visiting, including transport options and the best things to see once you’re there, read my full Split to Trogir guide.

If you’d rather explore further afield, I’ve also rounded up more wonderful day trips from Split, including Krka National Park and the islands.

Tip! If you’d prefer a quieter base, consider staying overnight – here are the best places to stay in Trogir Croatia, including Old Town hotels and beachside options.

Finish With Drinks At Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar

To finish your 3 days in Split, I recommend popping into the Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar! I found this little place buried in the old town, where there’s a small sign and a large oval door entrance, it’s the sort of gem you hope to find along the cobbles!

This is the only Jazz Bar, that I know of in Split, and I loved it the minute I entered, it’s super cosy and has a real grown-up feel about it – in comparison to some of the other nightlife bar choices and you’ll get a proper cocktail or gin here!

If you’re lucky, there might actually be a live jazz band, but even if there isn’t, it’s still worth going in – don’t miss this spot off your Split itinerary, it’s so special!

WHERE TO STAY IN SPLIT CROATIA

If you’re wondering where to stay in Split, there are some fantastic boutique hotel options within the charming walls of Diocletian’s Palace and just outside along the vibrant Riva with stunning sea views! Here’s my top picks:

Heritage Hotel Santa Lucia – is the best boutique hotel in Split Old Town, combining style and elegance, there’s also a wonderful rooftop terrace for drinks and stunning views!

Hotel Ambasador – top hotel in Split, featuring modern and spacious rooms along the stunning Riva offering a fantastic rooftop terrace and pool with epic views!

Golden Gate Rooms – beautiful, affordable-luxury rooms set within a unique UNESCO location – right within the walls of Diocletian’s palace!

For a full breakdown of boutique hotels, beach resorts and best areas, see my complete Where to Stay in Split Croatia guide.

Is 3 days in Split Croatia enough?

Yes! Three days in Split is enough time to see the main highlights and include a day trip without feeling completely rushed – it’s the sweet spot between sightseeing and relaxation, but if you can stay longer – great! You’ll have time to relax by the hotel pool or sea and visit more of the beautiful Croatian Islands and relax!

3 DAYS IN SPLIT CROATIA – USEFUL TRAVEL TIPS!

When To Visit Split Croatia

Split is best from May until September, when the weather is glorious, and Riva is at its most vibrant! And there’s more to do in the summer, from alfresco dining to boat trips and beach days! July and August are the peak – super crowded months! AVOID the Ultra Festival, this is for loud music and teenagers.

Book your hotel in advance

Split is the most popular destination in Croatia, and the best boutique hotels often sell out months in advance – especially from June to August. I highly recommend booking early for the best choice, rates, and to be close to the old town for your 3 days in Split. See my full guide to where to stay in Split.

Book boat tours and day trips ahead in summer

From June to September, the best boat tours and day trips book out quickly. If island hopping or waterfalls are part of your plan, it’s worth securing spots in advance (I share my favourites in my Split day trips guide).

How To Get To Split Croatia

Split Airport is around 35 minutes from the Old Town by taxi, Uber or airport bus – or for a quick and easy journey, book a private transfer ahead of time, it will save you time and money!

How To Get Around Split Croatia

Everything in and around the Old Town, such as the Riva and Marjan Hill, is completely walkable; buses, taxis and cheap Ubers cover the beaches in Split easily. The bus station is at the end of the Riva opposite the port, for going slightly further afield.
