If you’re looking for a beautiful day trip from Split, the picturesque coastal heritage town of Trogir is one of the best places to visit along the Dalmatian coast, and planning your Split to Trogir day trip couldn’t be easier!
Split is one of my favourite places in Croatia, it’s an exciting and stunning region where you can easily reach gorgeous places like Trogir and spend the day walking along a palm-tree-lined Riviera, lunching next to the shimmering water and finding gems in the charming old town.
A day trip from Split to Trogir can effortlessly slot into your itinerary, this picturesque heritage town may be pocket-sized, but it will leave a lasting impression!
Why visit Trogir from Split?
Trogir is one of the most rewarding day trips from Split, a refreshing change of pace from bustling organised tours and with only a 30-minute journey, it’s one of the nearest!
All the sights within the UNESCO World Heritage town can be covered in a couple of hours, leaving you plenty of time to enjoy lunch on the Riva or visit a beach club on Ciovo Island, it ticks all the boxes for culture, charm and scenery!
I was so impressed with my first visit, I have even returned and stayed in Trogir more than once, it’s a lovely alternative place to be situated!
Prefer a guided day trip instead? I recommend this highly rated Trogir and Blue Lagoon speed boat tour from Split, exploring the islands and Trogir for the perfect experience!
HOW TO SPEND A DAY IN TROGIR
EXPLORE TROGIR OLD TOWN LANES & SQUARES
Trogir Old Town immediately transports you to another time, and the first thing you will come across is the ancient drawbridge entrance, which links the mainland to the old town, just like the entry to Dubrovnik Old Town!
You’ll notice straight away that it has a similar look and feel to Split’s Old Town, with its same traditional shutters and carved stone walls, only Trogir is much more compact and less busy (dare I say cuter?), you’ll easily whip around the charming, shiny cobbled lanes and squares!
Roaming is one of my favourite ways to spot the gems and potential lunch spots, but do stop to admire the beautiful buildings, most of which are from the 14th century, and a few have been transformed into stylish boutiques!

Tip! If you’re thinking of staying overnight, I’ve shared the best places to stay in Trogir Croatia, from Old Town boutique hotels to waterfront stays.
ST LAWRENCE CATHEDRAL & BELL TOWER
St Lawrence Cathedral is the prominent attraction in Trogir Old Town, which is situated right on the pretty plaza in the centre of Trogir and is well worth venturing inside! As part of your entry ticket, you’ll see the Cathedral’s interior, and one of the best things to do is climb the Bell Tower for beautiful panoramic views across the rooftops and clock tower opposite!
I’m slightly obsessed with exploring Croatia’s old towns, especially from a beautiful Cathedral, like the one here or in Split Old Town. It really gives you a better sense of your location and cracking photo ops! Afterwards, I recommend stopping for a coffee at Corte Bar in the square to soak in your surroundings, and people watch, you can’t beat this vibrant central spot!
Trogir’s tiny Old Town is packed with historic squares and interesting architecture, I’ve shared all the highlights in my detailed post on the best things to do in Trogir Old Town.

Tip! If your base is Split, I recommend visiting Trogir on your third day, it’s so easy to slot into your Split itinerary, and this guide shows you how!
STROLL ALONG THE PRETTY TROGIR PROMENADE
Trogir’s waterfront is super attractive, similar to many smaller coastal heritage towns in Croatia like Hvar Town and Cavtat, a mini Riviera with a palm-tree-lined prom, gleaming white yachts and plenty of inviting terraces to sit and peruse, it really is postcard-perfect!
You will fall in love with this spot, strolling next to the sparkling blue sea and gorgeous Venetian architecture. I adore the Riva vibe, it’s buzzy but never overly busy or touristic, and it stretches the length of the old town, which begins at the gates to the harbour and finishes at Kamerlengo Castle ruin!
If you’re a fan of ruins and viewpoints, Kamerlengo Castle is worth popping in for the spectacular harbour views from the top – if you don’t mind climbing narrow ladders to get up there!

ENJOY LUNCH AT CHARMING FRANKA
Lunch in the charming old town is one of the best things to do in Trogir, especially when on a day trip from Split and while there are dozens of restaurants to choose from, there’s none better than FRANKA, in my opinion the best restaurant in Trogir!
FRANKA offers a gorgeous terrace tucked away in the most authentic part of the old town lanes, away from the bustle and other run-of-the-mill restaurants. You will enjoy a peaceful meal in attractive surroundings as well as some of the tastiest food I’ve tried in Trogir – it’s the perfect spot for a tuna steak and a glass of Croatian white wine!
CROSS TO CIOVO ISLAND FOR LAGANINI BEACHCLUB
If you have more time to spare on your day trip from Split to Trogir, I recommend hopping over to Ciovo Island opposite Trogir Old Town. You can grab a 10-minute Uber across to the other side of the island and have cocktails or a swim on the beach at the small luxury boho club Laganini – the only place like it in the area and nicer than the ones on the beaches of Split!
Laganini is one of my favourite spots to relax and be next to the open crystal clear blue water (see images below), it has a good vibe and is busy across lunchtime, especially, so a more relaxed sundowner may just be the perfect way to end your time in Trogir!

How long do you need in Trogir?
Trogir is very walkable and easily accessible (within 30 minutes) by bus, car or boat, which makes it an ideal half-day trip from Split. In just a morning or afternoon, you can see the highlights of the Old Town and enjoy a lovely lunch, but most visitors wish they had stayed longer!
Thinking of staying in Trogir instead?
If you’re considering staying for a night or two instead of visiting on a day trip, Trogir has some beautiful boutique hotels, including Hotel Brown Beach House, I couldn’t imagine staying anywhere else, it’s right on the waterfront with stylish terraces, a pool and sea views!
