A Brief History of the Alcazar of Seville
Did you know the Alcazar Palace wasn’t always a Palace? The Alcázar Seville, originally a 12th century fortress, evolved into a lavish royal palace under Don Pedro in the 14th century.
Over the centuries, it has been home to Spanish monarchs, blending architectural styles from Gothic palaces to 17th century Baroque.
BUT beyond its historic halls and grand courtyards, it is the gardens that truly steal the show!!
Exploring the Alcázar Gardens Seville
Stepping into the Alcázar Gardens feels like entering an oasis in the middle of town, you’ll easily spend an hour or two walking around the 8 hectares, the gardens in Seville are pretty extensive!
The Alcazar Gardens includes palm-tree lined walkways, intricate fountains and orange-tree patios plus there’s exotic plants and even a few peacocks!
Here are a few highlights of the Alcazar Gardens you won’t want to miss!!
Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens) – One of the most eye-catching spots inside the palace, this courtyard features elegant arches and a serene reflecting pool, showcasing classic Islamic design – just see my stunning gold image above!!
(P.S. If you are hoping to get photos of these arches without anyone in the background, I recommend going as early as possible!! You can even book a VIP Experience and be there before the gates open!!)
Jardín de la Danza (Dance Garden) – A hidden gem with shady pathways, beautiful tilework, and a peaceful fountain. Legend has it that royalty once enjoyed music and dancing here!
Jardines de Mercurio (Mercury Gardens) – This vibrant space is home to the stunning 16th century Mercury Fountain, surrounded by neatly trimmed hedges and manicured orange trees.
Jardín de la Cruz (Cross Garden) – If you love symmetry and historic design, this garden is a must-see. Its neatly arranged flower beds and tiled pathways are my favourite spots to wander!
The Hall of Ambassadors – Though technically inside the palace, this room is worth a mention! With its intricate gold ceiling and detailed tilework, it’s one of the most spectacular spaces in the Real Alcázar.
Whether you want to explore every corner or just find a quiet bench to sit and admire, the Alcázar Gardens Seville offers a magical escape right in the heart of the city.
Book this 1.5-hour top guided tour for a deeper dive into the history!

Alcazar Game of Thrones Connection
If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’re in for a treat! The Alcázar Seville was transformed into the stunning Water Gardens of Dorne, the palace of House Martell. With its sun-drenched patios, intricate Islamic architecture, and lush gardens, it was the perfect real-life setting for the exotic kingdom of Dorne.
Some must-see filming locations inside the Real Alcázar include:
The Mercury Gardens – Featured in scenes with Prince Doran Martell and Ellaria Sand.
The Ambassador’s Hall – Where the royal family held court beneath its breathtaking gold ceiling.
The Courtyards and Fountains – Perfect backdrops for tense conversations and dramatic moments!
Even if you’re not a Thrones fan, this section of the Alcázar Gardens Seville is still a must-visit. But if you are, get ready to walk in the footsteps of the Martells – minus the drama!
(You’ll learn more about this and other fun facts if you do an Alcazar Guided tour in Seville! More on that below)!
