Vis is one of Croatia’s untouched islands, with a gorgeous blend of rugged scenery, picturesque bays and charming taverns and there are some wonderful boutique hotels on Vis Island to make your stay even more magical!

Vis Town is the main place on the island and it’s beautiful, there’s a Venetian harbour, old town, waterfront restaurants and island scenery, I love strolling along the promenade and staying in boutique hotels in Vis like Hotel San Giorgio!

And giving Vis Town a run for it’s money is Komiza, the second area to consider when deciding where to stay in Vis and it offers even more old world charm – with a stunning bay framed by dramatic mountains and pretty stone houses.”

I have stayed in both areas of the island and each offer something different, they’re equally attractive and as a smaller, more tranquil island choosing where to stay is actually much simpler compared to busier islands like Hvar!

Vis Island is the most authentic and tranquil island in Dalmatia with rolling hills and mountains, lovely bays and scenic harbours, the setting is beautiful and the two main areas to stay, Vis Town and Komiza are very picturesque!

Visitors usually want to explore both of these spots and go on boat trips to the Blue Cave and iconic Stiniva Beach and the best thing is you can get to any of these places in around 20 minutes, and most of it falls under the UNESCO park!

Vis Town is the main area on Vis Island, it’s where the harbour and ferry port are located and will be your arrival point to the island of Vis and for most visitors this will be a convenient place to stay with more restaurants and boat taxis!

The entire town is situated on the waterfront with wonderful views of the islands, a long prom to wander and attractive Venetian architecture to admire, it feels classy, but also serene up until the yachts roll in – then it gets a little livelier!

If you stay here you will enjoy strolls along the waterfront, the old neighbourhood of Kut and dining on romantic terraces, it’s a lovely spot, great for getting around the island and has some of the best hotels on Vis Island like boutique San Giorgio!

Komiza is the smaller, more old-world and charming place to stay in Vis Island, packed with scenic mountains and traditional stone town houses as featured in the Mama Mia film, a quieter location than Vis Town and only 25 minutes away!

Arriving here is one of the best journey’s out of all the islands the road is super scenic and leads directly to the small horse-shoe bay with fisherman’s boats and cafes (which are lively in the peak summer months), it’s the spot to get direct water taxis to the Blue Cave and relax in an authentic Croatian village.

At either side of the bay there are small pebble beaches and a nice walk through the charming old town, it’s a very picturesque area, but if your looking for a place to stay, you will find mainly apartments and guest houses, the hotels on Vis are located in Vis Town.

Sea Pearl is a pretty town house right in the oldest part of town, with a cosy feeling and situated over three floors, the bedroom is in the roof, guests love the location and charming decor in particular. It’s a quirky place to stay in Komiza!

Apartments Mali Raj Komiza

Mali Raj offers large and modern apartments in the heart of Komiza, just a few minutes walk to anywhere, it offers full kitchens, separate loungers and charming stone wall details, a nice quiet retreat for slightly longer stays.

Seafront Rooms Koluna is a cute town house right on the harbour front, it offers just three nicely appointed rooms and each face the sea, I stayed on the top floor for four nights, the balcony view is the unbeatable and reason to stay – plus it’s very affordable, the entrance and breakfast wasn’t the best!

Vis Town vs Komiža: which is right for you?

For most visitors, the choice really comes down to Vis Town or Komiza, both fantastic and authentic places to stay in Vis, but with very different vibes, looks and attractions and they are only 25 minutes apart!

Vis Town is the ‘chic’ option and boasts more attractions, accommodation and quality restaurants, my favourite part is the stunning Venetian Riviera and harbour full of yachts and boats to take you around the island, there’s coffee shops and terraces on the waterfront and is overall the more convenient and popular place to stay in Vis.

Komiza is much smaller, more rustic and relaxed, with a charming maze of streets, old town houses, a picturesque mountainous landscape and small beaches, there’s a handful of restaurants and cafes along the harbour and the boat to the Blue Cave leaves directly from the harbour.

While Vis Town has the classy vibe, Komiza feels more like local village, which can spill over into the fisherman creating noise at night and surprisingly Komiza receives more day trippers than Vis Town due to the dramatic landscape and Mama Mia film connection!

Stay Around Vis Town If It’s Your First Visit

Stunning Vis Town is the most beautiful and best place to stay on Vis Island, especially if it’s your first visit to the area, and Boutique San Giorgio is a top hotel choice, perfectly situated for sea views and a short walk to restaurants and the harbour.

Best Time To Visit Vis Island

The best time to visit Croatia’s Islands is between May and September, but for the best experience, great weather and fewer crowds, I recommend late May-June or early September. My preference is the beginning of summer, when the evenings are lighter and you can swim and visit the Croatian Islands!

(Note: Vis is a quiet and seasonal Island, from October to April, most of it closes!)

Vis Island only has a handful of hotels, apartments and villas to choose from – and that is what makes this destination special and relatively peaceful even in the summer months, only two hotels are stand outs and these are Hotel San Giorgio and Pomalo Inn in Vis Town!

Many visitors arrive for a short stay before visiting the rest of the Dalmatian Islands, but as Vis is slightly off the beaten path and stunning, 3 or 4 nights is ideal to see the highlights and explore Vis beaches and take a boat trip from Vis Town – longer if you want more relaxation!

Vis Town Is Compact And Walkable

Vis Town is compact and very walkable, with a long shoreline and many pedestrianised areas, making it a hassle-free, easy-to-get-around, charming area to stay, just like Split Old Town, Dubrovnik Old Town, Korcula Town, Hvar Town and Trogir in the Dalmatian Region!

Getting Around Vis Island Is Easy

Vis Town and Komiza are mostly car-free and walkable areas, while car taxis, water taxis, buses and excursions are available to get around the Island’s beaches, vineyards and bays and from Vis Town harbour you can also get the ferry to Hvar Korcula, Dubrovnik or Split. It’s super convenient!
