WHEN TO VISIT CROATIA BY SEASON & WEATHER
Croatia’s weather is the one of it’s biggest draws with mild springs and autumns and hot summers, Hvar Island is even known as the sunniest Island in the Med, each season comes with it’s own vibe, so it’s worth knowing what to expect throughout the year!
SPRING (April–June)
Spring is a lovely time to visit Croatia with mild weather, blooming bougainvillaea and by the end of May there are already highs of around 29 degrees, which will suit many, it really is one of the best months to visit Croatia – it’s the ideal mix of good weather and fewer crowds, I’ve always enjoyed it the most!
April is cooler and quieter and best for exploring Dubrovnik Old Town, while all restaurants and beach bars on the islands will be waking up from the first week in May. Hvar especially is perfect from mid-May to early June, you’ll find the best boutique hotel availability during this time!
SUMMER (July–August)
Summer is Croatia’s peak season, it’s hot and sticky and walking around the old towns might be a drag, but island-hopping and cooling off in wonderful secluded bays can be a fun experience – popular Hvar and Korcula islands are in full swing!
Dalmatian hotspots between Dubrovnik and Split will be busy as it gets and hotels are often booked out weeks in advance, I recommend locking in your accommodation early for the summer months to avoid disappointment – you’ll always pay the August premium no matter what!
AUTUMN (September–October)
Autumn is an underrated time to visit Croatia, early September is still very much like summer, lively and hot – over 30 degrees most days and the sea is the warmest, which all quietens down as the month goes on – the islands really wrap up in October, I’ve seen bars and restaurants vanish!
The sweet spot for visiting Croatia in Autumn is the last week in September to the first week in October, the weather is perfect, not too hot, the summer crowds have gone and you can get better rates for those lush boutique hotels!

WINTER (November–March)
Winter is well and truly the off-season in Croatia, small coastal towns and islands offer very little with reduced services, hotel and restaurant closures, they are like ghost towns – and probably best saved for travels between May and September!
But Dubrovnik and Split are still worth a visit if the weather is good (it ranges from mild to rainy and cold), you can get some great hotel deals – some waterside restaurants maybe closed and attractions like the cable car in Dubrovnik old town – the central tourist office will find you some alternative sights!
Best Time To Visit Croatia Overview:
- Best for beaches & swimming: July – August
- Best for fewer crowds: May, June & September
- Best for value & lower prices: April & October
- Best for island hopping & boat tours: June – September
- Best for sightseeing (Dubrovnik & Split): May & October

BEST MONTHS TO VISIT CROATIA (Month-by-Month)
The best time to visit Croatia depends on what you’re looking to do, if you’re after warm and sunny weather without the intense heat May and mid-September to early October are ideal, while April and October are great for city sightseeing without the crowds! Here’s what each month brings!
APRIL IN CROATIA
April is quieter month to visit Croatia, the tourist season hasn’t quite arrived yet and there are very few cruise ships passing through making it ideal for exploring Dubrovnik Old Town in particular you can walk around the historic sights and the walls without side-stepping other people!
Boat excursions may be limited and the islands and some of the small towns are still in hibernation in April with very little open or transport to get there – also, the weather can be mixed and the evenings cooler!
MAY IN CROATIA
May is the best month to visit Croatia, with long sunny days, mild evenings and it’s the beginning of the season where the islands, idyllic waterfront restaurants and stylish beach clubs are just opening after the long winter break – and you don’t need to pre-book!
I also love travelling to Croatia in May, this warm and flower-filled month is ideal for Split, Dubrovnik and visiting popular islands like Hvar without the full summer crowds, by mid-May everything should be open and the vibe nice and relaxed!

JUNE IN CROATIA
June is another one of the best months to visit Croatia, with hotter temperatures lighter nights and a livelier atmosphere, just before the peak summer crowds, by late June you’ll see a shift in vibe, Dubrovnik and Split will be busier and Hvar Town buzzy, but not overwhelming!
This month is perfect for beach-hopping, swimming and boat trips around the smaller islands- they will be lush green and quieter, great for dining waterside in peace!
Visiting in June? It’s an ideal time to book a boat tour from Split or Dubrovnik – you’ll get the full experience, without the peak season crowds.

JULY & AUGUST CROATIA
July and August is the absolute peak of the summer season the hottest and busiest months to visit Croatia, the coastline is vibrant, Dubrovnik old town bustling and the islands are full of atmosphere, Hvar especially – the beach clubs are lively and the evenings energetic!
Even smaller towns like Trogir can’t escape the day trippers, it can be fun, but also crowded and expensive, I recommend doing your exploring first thing and booking a hotel with a private pool or beach location for the best experience!
Visiting in July or August? It’s worth booking your beach hotel early to secure the best locations – take a look at my guides to the best beachfront stays in Split and Dubrovnik.
SEPTEMBER IN CROATIA
September is usually the best month to visit Croatia for most people, it offers the perfect balance of warm weather, fewer crowds and a more relaxed atmosphere – even the sea is still warm great for beaches and taking boat trips from Hvar, Dubrovnik and Split to nearby gems like the Blue Lagoon and beautiful Pakleni Islands.
Early September will still feel like summer, but it calms down after the second weekend in popular spots like Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik – with better availability at some of the most sought-after boutique hotels!
Tip! If you can be flexible with your dates, September is the ideal time to visit – take a look at my where to stay guides to find the best boutique hotels across Croatia.

OCTOBER IN CROATIA
October is similar to April, one of the best times to visit Croatia for quieter and crowd-free experience, which is perfect for exploring historic cities like Dubrovnik and Split and you’ll also enjoy better rates on luxury hotels across the coast – last minute deals especially!
There will be warmer sunbathing days earlier in the month then beach hotspots wind down for the season and after the first week in October the islands are deserted and services packed away, but for city sightseeing and dinning, October is a lovely time to visit!

BEST TIME TO VISIT CROATIA FOR…
BEACHES & SWIMMING

SAILING & BOAT TOURS
The best time for sailing and boat tours is between June and September, you can expect long sunny days, reliable weather and lovely sea temps, this is when popular boat trips from Dubrovnik, Split and Hvar run daily to Blue Lagoons, private beach coves, secluded over-water restaurants and more!
Visiting in June or September? This is the perfect time to book a boat tour, with fewer crowds and better availability than peak summer!
DUBROVNIK WITHOUT CROWDS
If you want to experience Dubrovnik at it’s best, visit in the shoulder months of April to mid May and October, even the end of September is a nice time for exploring the city walls, old town lanes and waterfront restaurants without the big crowds – it’s still warm, but not boiling hot, making it much more enjoyable!
Planning a quieter trip? Take a look at my Dubrovnik itinerary and where to stay guide to find the best areas and boutique hotels.

LOWER PRICES
If you’re looking for better value, the best time to visit Croatia is May and late September to the first week in October, you’ll still enjoy warm weather, open restaurants and hotels, but with fewer crowds and more availability – making it the perfect time to book affordable boutique stays in Dubrovnik like Boutique Stari Grad!
WHEN TO AVOID VISITING CROATIA
The month of August is the height of the tourist summer season and see’s thousands more visitors, packed waterfronts, old towns and restaurants, locals are frantic and the vibe is busy and hectic, I personally would avoid August – and it’s inflated prices!
My personal pick!
If I had to choose my favourite time to visit Croatia I would absolutely pick late May to early June or second week in September, quite specific as I’ve experienced six different months in the top areas (Hvar, Dubrovnik, Split, Trogir, Korcula and Vis) and it strikes the perfect balance!
You’ll get gorgeous sunny days and balmy evenings, warm sea temperatures, especially September and best of all, the Islands are in full swing, but not overly busy, boutique hotel prices are reasonable and you can walk around the old towns in peace!
