What brought me to this list of solo female travel places in Europe? Each one of these interesting destinations have been personally vetted – some more than once! I am a massive champion for solo female travel and where better to share than the places I know so well. Not only do they tick all the boxes for solo female travellers, but are located in some of the most charming areas in Europe to visit.

Here are my 8 best places for solo female travel in Europe.

LAKE BLED, SLOVENIA

Lake Bled in Slovenia is a little off the beaten path gem that has the perfect amount of stunning alpine scenery and activities to explore for the intrepid solo female traveller. Loneliness will not be an issue, there is so much to do with your time here and all of it easy to manage on foot – even Lake Bled itself.

Walk, cycle and hike the scenic lake or simply grab a book and relax by the grassy shoreline, there are lots of ways in which to enjoy this amazing mountainous location! For lunch you are really spoilt for choice, but for the very best view in town, hike up to the castle and book a table at the Bled Castle terrace situated at the top with sweeping panoramic scenes – and ask for the lake bled cake, it’s the best one you will have!

Lake Bled is a peaceful and clean place with a nice friendly village vibe – it reminded me a lot of Austria, even the alpine style lodges – pick a lovely guest house and enjoy the beautiful surrounds and nearby villages and viewpoints.

KORCULA ISLAND, CROATIA

Croatia is a special country to explore, I’ve been travelling its stunning coastline for more than ten years, it’s easy going, safe, friendly and has an abundance of culture and cuisine to get involved in. One of the places I like to stay while island hopping Croatia is Korcula Island, situated around clear turquoise waters, mountains, little sand-stoned heritage villages and a fab old town reminiscent of Dubrovnik.

The restaurant scene is wonderful, you can take your pick of fresh seafood, Italian and tapas along the water’s edge, get lost down the narrow cobble streets and try the home grown wine. In the day time make a point of visiting the vineyards by guided bike or sail to a nearby beach or islands organized from the harbour, it really is a lovely Croatian island!

GRANADA, SPAIN

Granada quickly became one of my favourite locations in Spain after a week-long excursion via rail around Andalucia taking in Ronda, Seville and Granada. There were many highs, but Granada really stood out as a great all round destination for female travellers, the area is nothing short of a fairytale.

Located just below the foot hills of Sierra Nevada, Granada is surrounded by mountain peaks and wading above the town is the spectacular landmark; the Alhambra Palace. This Palace is famous in Spain, I recommend booking an advance ticket and visiting at the beginning of summer to see the flower displays inside the maze-like grounds, you could easily spend a day absorbing it all.

The food in Granada is tasty and authentic even more so around the narrow paths of the ancient white-washed Albayzin area, were tapas is plentiful – and free with most drinks. One of my favourite memories was at the top of the Albayzin listing to authentic Flamenco guitarists from Mirador San Nicolas whilst gazing at an a epic view of the Alhambra.

KOTOR, MONTENEGRO

If you’re looking to travel somewhere charming, but on a smaller budget Kotor is the place to be! It’s truly one of last hidden gems in Europe, there’s history, mountains, never-ending lakes, cobblestones and an array of interesting things to explore within the walled old town, you could easily spend a week in intriguing Kotor.

When I first arrived to Kotor I had few expectations, but I could never have imagined how much I would love this place in the short space of time that I had! A few of the highlights include walking around the maze-like old town, hiking up to the fortress viewpoint, visiting the small village of Preset with the most epic mountain backdrop and jumping on an day trip to Tara River and the black mountains.

Kotor Town is one of the most surprising but best places for solo female travellers to stay, it’s small enough to walk around and there’s lots of excursions to hop on taking you to some out of this world scenic places – I hope to return one day!

PAROS ISLAND, GREECE

Paros is one of the lesser known islands of the Cyclades group in Greece and for now it remains off the busy tourist radar. You will not see crowds like Santorini or Mykonos here, for one thing the nearest international airport is a boat ride away and amazingly cruise ships also by-pass Paros island!

For solo female travellers, upmarket Paros strikes the perfect balance – not too quiet or big on parties and thankfully you will be able to afford a nice place to stay somewhere lovely. On every corner you’ll find all the typical gorgeous characteristic of the Cyclades; white washed houses, stone paths, attractive taverns, amazing breakfast spots and sparkling blue sea were you won’t feel out of place with a good book!

Paros was the third island I visited on a Greek island (ferry) island hopping trip starting in Santorini before venturing to Mykonos and ending in Paros. All three were fantastic, but I instantly felt more at ease in Paros and walking around the two pretty towns of Parikia and Naousa. At the end of May there’s nowhere better to unwind – and swim!

DUBROVNIK, CROATIA

Dubrovnik is home to wonderful architecture, restaurants, wine, beaches, the glittering Adriatic and one thousand percent lives up to the ‘pearl of the Adriatic’ hype. Sure, it definitely has more than its fair share of tourists in the peak summer months, but it will forever be one of my favourite places in Europe.

Dubrovnik was the first destination in Croatia I visited alone, to say I was impressed is an understatement, I have travelled there many times since. It’s the perfect sized city for solo travellers who like to keep busy with sightseeing, day trips and a bit of bustle! Dubrovnik has the best terraces, maze of streets to navigate within the old town walls, fancy beach clubs and a fab hop on and off taxi boat service directly from the harbour.

Surrounded yourself with fairytale landscape and kind people!

Spend the day in lovely Cavtat or beach hopping in the Elaphite Islands before returning back for your culture fix within the old town. If you’re in time for the sunset head up to the cable car at mount Srd and take in the show stopping view over the orange roof tops, islands and deep blue sea!

HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA

Looking for the most beautiful village in Europe? This would be Hallstatt in Austria and not only is it stunning but also an excellent safe place for solo female travellers to roam. Hallstatt is full of old worldly charm, chocolate box houses, mountain peaks and plenty of fresh air!

You would need to fly into Saltzburg and take two trains and a bus, probably the most scenic public transport of our life, but it’s worth the extra miles, it really is an spellbinding place to spend a few days in. I stopped in the heritage town of Hallstatt with a front row view of the enormous lake for four nights on the guidance of a close friend and it couldn’t have been a more perfect spot.

It has everything, I would even suggest more days if you like waterfall hikes – straight from the old town, lunch overlooking the lake , easy e-bike trails, sunbathing – yes you even have sunloungers facing the mountains in summer – the whole experience is so unique you can’t even believe that your there!

SEVILLE, SPAIN

Seville is one of the most charming cities to visit in Andalusia Spain, the whole area is pretty from the cobbles of Santa Cruz to the elaborate cathedral and orange trees. All the sights and sounds are within walking distance from the old town, which is a perfect base for the solo female traveller.

In previous visits this is exactly where I have stayed, in the heart of the bustle and a stone’s throw from all the tapas, vino and Flamenco you can handle – and there’s a lot of it! One thing is for certain, you will not feel strange bar hopping alone here, tasting all the food in small bites with a glass of wine is part of the culture and an easy way of keeping yourself busy!

Smaller places make perfect short trips for intrepid women travelling alone.

Walk through Maria Luisa Park to the Spanish Square, book an advance ticket to the Royal Alcazar Palace, wander the unique neighborhoods across the Guadalquivir River and find a lively terrace such as EME Hotel to toast the sunset!
