Escaping the UK’s damp weather to a place that still feels like summer is the stuff of dreams! I have travelled to many warm destinations in December within Europe, from beach stays in Marbella and Fuerteventura to exploring the cities of Malaga, Seville and Lisbon (without being swaddled in clothing!)
If you’re looking for a festive sun break, there are some amazing options for where to have Christmas Day (in the sun of course) and New Year’s. Celebrate in a fancy five-star hotel or a charming historic square lit up with fairy lights and cheer – it will be incredible!
You’ll be surprised by how many hot countries in December there are in Europe, from Malta to Spain and even parts of Italy and the best thing is they are far cheaper and less crowded, so you can splurge on that gorgeous boutique hotel you’ve had your eye on!

What is the hottest place in Europe in December?
The hottest place in Europe in December is Spain, especially the south coast of Spain, like Marbella and also the Canary Islands, where temperatures regularly hover around a balmy 21-24°C! There are many winter sun ideas for Spain in this round-up – it’s also one of my personal favourite countries!
TOP WARM DESTINATIONS IN DECEMBER IN EUROPE
If you’re looking to trade grey skies and winter coat weather for something a little warmer, here are my top tips for the warmest places in December in Europe, including what to do and where to stay!
1. MARBELLA, BALEARICS
Temperature: High 22°C / Low 11°C
Marbella is my top Spanish destination for warm winter sun in December and great vibes! I have visited this Southern Spain location many times between December and January, it’s popular for long stays with lower prices and smaller crowds, particularly along the Golden Mile, the most beautiful part!
One of my favourite things about staying in Marbella is the guaranteed blue skies and warm weather; due to the special micro-climate, it’s the warmest spot on the Costa del Sol! You can even walk around in short sleeves and sit at the beachfront restaurants, basking in sunshine – it’s glorious!

Marbella is an all-year-round destination, other than a few larger beach clubs that close from November until April, there are plenty of things to enjoy, from walking the Golden Mile, boat tours, stylish cocktails on the beach (check out Puento Romano), to visiting the pretty white washed towns of Puerto Banus and Marbella.
Speaking of which, from the 6th of December in Marbella old town’s famous orange square, you’ll find festive lights and Christmassy displays, there’s also a Christmas market in Puerto Banus! For New Years, I recommend booking ahead, Marbella is a fantastic and lively place to celebrate. I would seriously consider Nobu Hotel or Kimpton Los Monteros for parties!
Where To Stay
Stay along the beautiful Golden Mile, my top picks are Me by Marbella for quality amenities and fab pool or Puento Romano, a stylish oasis!
For an in-depth look at Marbella you can see my guide to Marbella!
2. MALAGA, SPAIN
Temperature: High 21°C / Low 10°C
Malaga is the perfect winter city break in December, you’ll fall in love with the city’s attractive Spanish streets and rich history in the warm winter sunshine, plus there are a few extra festive activities to explore in the Costa del Sol’s capital!
Walking around the 11th-century Alcazaba fortress palace is an absolute must; it overlooks the city’s old town and marina and is often referred to as the best-preserved Alcazaba in the country, and right next to it are the Roman Theatre ruins and stunning Cathedral!

Malaga’s old town lanes are equally impressive, with fantastic Spanish architecture and great restaurants peppered in between designer shops and terraces. There’s a lot of places to treat yourself, but I especially enjoyed the delicious tapas at Blossom on Calle Larios Lane, which also happens to be the prettiest street in Malaga!
Another reason to head to Malaga in December is for the festive light displays. If you like the Christmas lively spirit, a huge light display takes place every evening at 8pm from the 6th of December, which attracts a big crowd – and it’s on Calle Larios Lane!
(You can also pop into the Cathedral for more festive things!)
As for the evening, I encourage you to visit the rooftop terraces, there are some sky-high dreamy bars with bags of atmosphere, wicked views and live music – yes, even in mild December!
Where To Stay
Stay in the atmospheric old town, I recommend the boutique hotel Icon Malabar and their deluxe double rooms – this is where I stopped. For a splurge, choose Only You Hotel Malaga; it has stunning rooms and a great rooftop terrace.
Looking for more Malaga inspiration? I have the details in this complete guide to Malaga!
3. VALLETTA, MALTA
Temperature: High 17°C / Low 11°C
Often an overlooked Island, Malta in the Mediterranean Sea is actually one of the warmest places in December in Europe, where the temperature hardly ever drops below 16°C!
A fascinating place to base yourself is the heritage capital of Valletta, where you’ll love wandering the historic winding streets and discovering things like St John’s Cathedral – a Baroque masterpiece, as well as promenade walks and a handful of great boutique hotels to base yourself!

For nature and adventure lovers, you won’t be disappointed with a visit to the Upper Barrakka Gardens with panoramic views and boat trips to the turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon – in December it’s much more peaceful and better for photo opportunities!
If you can squeeze in more time, I recommend seeing the ‘silent’ Medieval fortified city of Mdina with golden buildings or a day trip to Gozo and finishing up your Malta winter escape with an evening in vibrant St Julians!
Where To Stay
Valletta is the best, most charming and convenient place to stay for first-time visitors, my top hotel pick is Casa Elull, a top central boutique hotel within a charming location.
4. MADERIA ISLAND, PORTUGAL
Temperature: High 20°C / Low 14°C
Madeira is often called the “Hawaii of Europe”, known for its year-round sub-tropical climate and mountainous landscape, which attracts nature and adventure lovers worldwide.
The combination of fantastic scenery, warm Portuguese culture and unusual beaches makes Madeira one of the best European winter sun destinations for a warm and diverse holiday!

Lovely Funchal is a perfect spot to stay and explore the rest of the island! As Maderia is small, you can reach almost anywhere in one hour, including some of the islands’ best hiking trails, waterfalls and viewpoints (like the incredible Ponte de São Lourenço)!
While in Funchal, there is a cable car, which takes you to the highest point for spectacular views and a colourful display of pastel buildings and orange rooftops and there’s also a beautiful palace and gardens at the top!
Madeira is definitely worth considering for your next winter sun break in Europe and if you like fire works displays – stay for New Years and Madeira’s is considered one of Europe’s best!
Where To Stay
The best place to stay is Quinta Da Casa Branca, set in gorgeous gardens, a lovely landscape and view in Funchal!
5. CYPRUS
Temperature: High 19°C / Low 9°C
Cyprus is also one of the hottest places in Europe in December, which may come as a surprise as it’s more often associated with summer holidays, but with all-year-round flights, great value and mild winters, Cyprus is definitely one to consider!
December is a great season to visit Cyprus, you can explore the island without over-heating and see some major attractions like the Tombs of the Kings and hike around Avakas Gorge, not to mention all the beaches you can find – crowd-free and golden in the winter light!

A bonus of road-tripping in Cyprus is that they drive on the same side as the UK, which is perfect and the roads will not be congested like they can be in summer, so you don’t have to fear driving in a foreign country!
Where To Stay
The best place to stay in Cyprus is the luxurious Cap ST George Hotel & Resort for stunning sea views and beachfront location.
6. ALGARVE, PORTUGAL
Temperature: High 18°C / Low 9°C
The Algarve is the warmest place in Portugal, known for its long coastline and dramatic landscapes and while it might be bustling and hot in summer, in December you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere, great weather and reasonable winter prices!
December is the perfect month to explore the numerous hiking trails that hug the coastline near the popular town of Lagos and to see the famous beach Praia do Camilo and Benagil Caves with a rare crowd-free experience!

Casa Mae is the most fabulous hotel to base yourself in this location, it’s decked out in beachy white and blues and the whole vibe is relaxing and luxurious. I stopped here and enjoyed the food and spacious rooms immensely!
Another great spot to visit or stay is the charming town of Tavira in East Algarve, with a lovely cobbled old town, sea views and a nature reserve that not many people know about, it’s the Algarve’s hidden gem!
What I love most about the Algarve as a European winter sun destination, besides the great weather, is the long-stay rates, there are so many offers and in some truly unique boutique hotels!
Where To Stay
I highly recommend the 5-star Casa Mae Boutique Hotel in the heart of Lagos, it’s fantastic! Calegio Charm House is another lovely boutique in authentic Tavira, well worth checking out for your next European sun destination!
7. LANZAROTE, CANARY ISLANDS
Temperature: High 22°C / Low 16°C
The Canary Islands are always a solid choice for winter sun and Lanzarote one of the top warm places in December in Europe to escape to, loved by many for its otherworldly volcanic landscapes and affordable pricing!
Lanzarote is a great destination for a beach holiday with plenty of beachfront resorts to unwind and swim by the sea, which is significantly warmer than anywhere else on this list for December (water temperatures are 20°C)!

But reserve a day or two to explore the stunning landscapes, they really are just so beautiful and I particularly love the breathtaking views and striking black sand beaches against the turquoise blue waters, a road trip here will be unforgettable!
If you are the outdoorsy type, you can always book a hiking trip to Timanfaya National Park, it’s definitely best and safer with a guide, who shows you the best spots and routes!
Looking for a bit of December holiday cheer? Head to the small town of Teguise for a taste of traditional Christmas markets and atmosphere!
Where To Stay
Check out Cesar Luxury Boutique Hotel, a brand new experience in Lanzarote! This hotel has been on my radar ever since it opened!
8. NICE, FRANCE
Temperature: High 14°C / Low 7°C
Nice is one of the best warm destinations in December to visit for a lovely European city break that includes glamour and reasonable prices – not often associated with the South of France!
I love spending the weekend in Nice, specifically in the old town where you’ll find charming rows of orange and yellow buildings, traditional markets and winter lights alongside the turquoise blue of the Riviera!

Stay in the sort after hotel La Perouse Nice Baie des Angles with sweeping sea views and a prime location for hopping on the coastal train to beautiful Antibes and Villefranche-sur-Mer!
It might not be sunbathing weather, but you can take advantage of the cosy french restaurants, mild weather for promedade strolls and more festive feel in December – don’t miss Marché Aux Fleurs, which is Nice’s food and flower market.
Where To Stay
The best hotel in Nice for December is Hotel La Perouse Nice Baie des Angles, a chic hotel with fabulous views in Nice Old Town.
9. TENERIFE, CANARY ISLANDS
Temperature: High 23°C / Low 16°C
Another popular Canary Island on this list, Tenerife, is definitely one of the warmest places in December in Europe, with regular flight schedules and daily temperatures hovering around 24!
The warmest part of the island is the south coast, and the two main spots to stay are Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje, which offer Spanish towns to wander, long beaches and many options for where to stay from resorts to apartments!

You can spend your time swimming in the sea and sunbathing around a pool – cocktail in hand, but you can also navigate your way around the rugged landscape as well. Tenerife is well-known for its mountains and adventure activities.
Boat trips, hiking and biking are very popular in the winter months, and as December is off-season, you’ll benefit from fantastic prices and availability, so you can rent a car and discover the island!
Where To Stay
Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort and Spa, for the ultimate relaxing stay in Tenerife!
10. SICILLY, ITALY
Temperature: High 16°C / Low 12°C
A gem in Southern Italy, Sicily is one of the best winter sun destinations to visit in December, when the temperatures are still mild and the atmosphere is wonderful!
Palermo is the best place to visit at this time of year, it’s the capital and rich in culture and history, it has a whopping eight UNESCO sights in total and over 200 ancient churches – don’t miss Palermo Cathedral, it’s a real highlight!

Sicily’s charm extends to the windy, cobbled streets and small towns that are even more romantic in December with twinkly lights strung overhead. It’s perfect if you enjoy great food, wine and historical sights – you must also try the local Cannoli and tasty arancini.
A must-visit is Cefalu which is an hour away from Palermo City, it’s quieter, maybe even more charming and is known for it’s 12th Century Fortress that looms over the town!
I have yet to visit, but Cefalu is high on my list of places to explore!
Where To Stay
Vossia Luxury Rooms & Sicilian Living is the perfect place to stay in Palermo – this is my top pick for central location and high praise reviews!
11. MALLORCA, BALEARICS
Temperature: High 17°C / Low 11°C
Mallorca is usually known for summer holidays, but believe it or not, this island is one of the best European winter sun destinations that should definitely be high on the list of places to visit in December!
Mallorca is a beautiful island with bags of culture and gorgeous mountainous landscapes with epic windy roads and viewpoints for exploring by car or hiking for the adventurous!
Among the mountains are sand coloured fincas and charming villages such as Valldemossa, Alcudia Old Town and Santanyí, which are picturesque places to wander around for the afternoon and tranquil in winter!

Palma, the island’s capital is a great place to stay in December, the Jewish Quarter is particularly lovely and is home to some great boutiques like Nobis Hotel Palma! I also love the vibrant wine and tapas culture in Palma – don’t miss Bishop Wine Studio, it’s super cosy!
You really can’t beat sitting in an atmospheric square in the afternoon, sipping wine, which you can totally do even in December, while wearing a shirt, and the evenings come alive with festive lights and music!
Where To Stay
For a chic stay in Palma, I recommend the beautiful Nobis Hotel Palma or Calatrava Hotel Palma for gorgeous rooms and sea views!
12. THE AZORES, PORTUGAL
Temperature: High 18°C / Low 10°C
The Azores is a unique and stunning location, made for those who are looking for a nature filled trip in December with warm weather and lots of hiking trails!
A true natural beauty, the Azores are made up of tiny islands that are one of the warmest places in Europe in December, where temperatures regularly hover around 19°C!

Naturally, there’s plenty of outdoorsy activities to get stuck into from chasing waterfalls to climbing mountains or you can simply relax at your luxury hotel with gorgeous surrounds and a glass of local wine!
If you stayed at White Exlusive Suites and Villas, you probably wouldn’t want to leave. It’s a brand new property in an absolutely stunning location, I think it’s perfection! But I do recommend checking out the nearby waterfalls and rockpools!
Tip! For an extended trip you can easily combine The Azores with the island of Madeira!
Where To Stay
Stay at the White Exclusive suites, a gorgous chic property with invinity pooll set within a stunning location!
13. BARCELONA, SPAIN
Temperature: High 15°C / Low 7°C
Barcelona is a fantastic city in Northern Spain, and December is a great time to visit when the days are warm and the sun is bright and the streets are not jam-packed with tourists and cruise ship day trippers!
What I love most of all about Barcelona is that you can spend hours walking around the beautiful streets taking in all the wonderful architecture and eating delicious Spanish tapas as you go!

Barcelona has plenty of Christmas markets to see in December, Fira de Santa Llúcia in front of the Gothic Cathedral is the main one to visit; it sells traditional Catalan gifts, which are cute keepsakes!
But you’ll also have to visit the city’s top attractions built by Gaudí, such as La Sagrada Familia, which is unmissable yet still very popular no matter what the season, so pre-booking is still advisable!
I also recommend taking advantage of the cheaper December hotel rates – book that fancy hotel, it’s almost half the price of summer!
Where To Stay
Miiro Borneta, a stylish boutique situated in the sort after Gothic location with a superb rooftop terrace!
Winter sun without the festivities? Check out my guide to the warmest places in Europe in January, for more inspiration!
14. SEVILLE, SPAIN
Temperature: High 20°C / Low 10°C
Seville is the capital of the Andalusia region, a picturesque city steeped in history with spectacular architecture and plazas! It’s also one of the warmest cities for winter European sun, a perfect weekend cultural break and one of my favourite places to stay in Spain!
In the summer months, this bustling city scorches under 40° temperatures, but in December, the weather is much more pleasant for strolling around the cobbled lanes and photographing beautiful sights like the mesmerising Seville Cathedral and elegant Alcazar Palace without wilting under the heat!

Seville also celebrates Christmas festivities with a series of events throughout the city centre and main shopping streets, which are decorated with sparkling lights. You might also see Christmas concerts, street musicians, and parades during your stay in December.
Pick a gorgeous boutique hotel in the charming old town, also known as Barrio Santa Cruz next to the cathedral, it’s the ideal spot for tapas hopping or taking in a Flamenco show, which is a must!
Where To Stay
Casa del Poeta is the perfect place to stay in the heart of Seville old town!
If you’re looking for more inspiration, check out my full guide to Seville here!
15. FUERTEVENTURA, CANARY ISLANDS
Temperature: High 22°C / Low 14°C
If you’re looking for warm destinations in December, you will love Fuerteventura, it’s one of the quieter and most unique of all the Canary Islands listed in this post, in which I discovered in the week before Christmas of last year!
I stopped in the adult-only Barcelo Fuerteventura Royal Level, which offers a laid-back atmosphere and excellent sunbathing weather for lounging on the balanise beds by the infinity pool with a cocktail in hand. It was absolutely idyllic, but there’s more to this island!

Fuerteventura can be described as dry and desert-like with beautiful beaches, cacti, mountains, volcanic craters and some of the best sand dunes in the whole archipelago, the diverse landscape is worth leaving the sun lounger!
Check out the island on this incredible panoramic tour – I think it must be one of the most underrated destinations for winter sun!
Where To Stay
There are plenty of resort-style accommodations in Fuerteventura, adult-only Barcelo Fuerteventura Royal Level is where I stayed. It offers a seafront location with a gorgeous infinity pool and has undergone a recent renovation, plus it’s only 15 minutes from the airport!
16. LISBON, PORTUGAL
Temperature: High 15°C / Low 9°C
Lisbon is one of the warmest places in Europe in December for a cool city break, where you can expect blue skies and pleasant temperatures, perfect for tackling those hills and viewpoints!
One of the things I love most about exploring Lisbon is that the attractions and feel of the city are every bit as vibrant in winter as they are in summer, and the pastel buildings, tiles and terraces are just as eye-catching!

For the best things to do in Lisbon, be sure to stop by the colourful and oldest neighbourhood Alfama, where you can catch the infamous No28 tram through the main street that continues up to the historic 11th-century São Jorge Castle for panoramic views over the city.
Shopping is also amazing in Lisbon, Avenida da Liberdade is a must-do, you can get some incredible buys along this gorgeous tree-lined street peppered with luxury stores (much cheaper than the UK) and coffee stops – check out the Coffee House Experience!
For spare days, go on a day trip to Casias, a pretty seaside town. It has a nice central cobbled square and prom to walk, this spot is also where the wealthy own second homes, so you can be sure it’s worth seeing!
Where To Stay
My top pick for Lisbon is the Vintage Hotel & Spa set in a perfect location, with a great vibe and fab rooftop over looking the city!
17. GRAN CANARIA, CANARY ISLANDS
Temperature: High 22°C / Low 16°C
Gran Canaria is the fourth Canary Island in this list and for good reason, it’s the hottest place in Europe in December!
With Gran Canaria having an all-year-round sunbathing temperature, everything on the island remains open, even in winter and the best thing is the accommodation prices are lower in comparison to summer, so you can stay a little longer and explore the island more!

Driving along the winding coastal roads is the perfect way to reach the fantastic beaches and hiking spots on this island and see the rugged island landscape that looks straight out of Jurassic Park, it’s spectacular – and something many visitors miss out on!
Where To Stay
Boutique Hotel Cordial La Peragrina has a fantastic viewpoint and pool in the historic centre of Las Palmas.
18. MARRAKESH, MOROCCO
Temperature: High 20°C / Low 9°C
Okay, so Marrakesh isn’t technically Europe, but with a short three-and-a-half-hour flight from the UK, I couldn’t resist adding it in as an option, as it’s even closer to get to (from the UK) than the Canary Islands!
Marrakesh is an exotic destination with plenty of culture and life, it will be a shock to the system arriving here from the UK winter, which is exactly why you should go and check it out, it’s one of the top warm destinations in December!

Stay in a chic Riad like Botanica for a memorable experience, visit the souks and gardens (don’t miss Le Jardin Secret) and take a day trip to the desert or Atlas Mountains to make the most of your stay, but don’t forget to pack layers for the evening, as the temperature drops as soon as the sun goes down!
Go to Marrakesh for something totally different this December!
Where To Stay
The best place to stay is Raid Botanica, a sanctuary and also a riot of colour with a gorgeous rooftop and setting!
TRAVEL TIPS FOR ENJOYING WINTER SUN IN EUROPE
Planning a sunny December escape to Europe? Here are a few helpful tips to make the most of your winter sun getaway!
1. Pack for Mixed Weather
Even Europe’s warmest winter spots can have cooler evenings and the occasional cloudy day in December. Bring lightweight layers, a warm wrap or jumper/light jacket for nights out, and a pair of comfortable trainers for wandering through historic old towns, hiking or walking Marbella’s famous Golden Mile!
2. Book Accommodation Early
Popular winter-sun destinations like Marbella, Madeira and the Canary Islands fill up fast in December – especially boutique hotels. If you’ve got your eye on somewhere special, book ahead to secure the best rooms (and sea views!).

3. Dine Al Fresco (When You Can!)
Outdoor dining is still big in sunny coastal towns like Marbella and Palma, and nothing beats a glass of wine in the sun while watching the world go by – leave some gaps for long lazy lunches on restaurant terraces when planning your itinerary!
4. Embrace the Off-Season Pace
One of the best things about visiting hot places in Europe in December is the slower, more relaxed atmosphere. Without the summer crowds, you can expect shorter queues, prettier photos and better restaurant availability – bliss!
5. Add Nearby Day Trips
December is the perfect month for exploring, when it’s not too hot, a lot of the destinations on this list offer fantastic day trips to off-the-beaten-path places like hiking in Mallorca or Tenerife and visiting smaller charming towns in Spain – you can easily pop over to Marbella old town or Ronda from Malaga, for example.
Planning a Spanish trip? I’ve shared what to do in Malaga and curated the best two-day itinerary for Seville to help you choose.
6. Enjoy Lower Prices
Flights in December are low, you can grab seats for as little as €35 for Malaga and Fuerteventura, while hotels and apartments offer reasonable winter rates and discounts for longer stays!
