Last updated on June 8th, 2026 at 06:58 pm

Are you a fan of Game of Thrones? If you’re wondering whether the Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Tour is worth going on in 2026, I’m sharing a complete run down of my recent experience with official private tour guide Katia who walked me through the key filming locations, photo ops and shared trivia along the way – but was it worth it?

I’m not typically a city guide person, but the Game of Thrones filming locations is not just any tour as I found out, and to cut to the chase, yes a Game of Thrones tour in Dubrovnik is well worth your time if you’re into the show and you like visiting film locations, as far as these go Dubrovnik is one of the best – and I’ve seen the Hobbiton set in New Zealand!

I’ve visited Dubrovnik Old Town several times and this tour is one of the few things I hadn’t done, so in the name of research I was interested to know more about it, and was keen to learn the show’s epic filming sequences along with their difficulties and which backdrops looked incredible on screen (they also look incredible in real life), it did help that Katia had worked on set and could share insider detail!

This Game of Thrones tour, takes you to the best and most dramatic filming locations including Fort Lawrence and the iconic city walls, even the Iron Throne and it only takes two hours of your time, here’s how my experience unfolded so you can decide if the Game of Thrones tour is worth including into your own Dubrovnik Itinerary!

Key Dubrovnik Game of Thrones locations You’ll See!

If you’re wondering where exactly in Dubrovnik the world of Westeros came to life, here are some of the most iconic filming locations!

Pile Gate & Harbour (Blackwater Bay)

Pile Gate is a great place to begin, a number of scenes where filmed at Pile Gate and its harbour also known as Blackwater Bay, where Myrcella sets sail for Dorne, and you’ll easily spot it – see the image below near the kayaks or you could rewatch season 2 episode 6 (riot on King’s Landing) to jog your memory!

Katia walked us around this jaw-dropping area (pointing out the exact filming scenes with stills), one of the most prominent places in Dubrovnik Old Town, between the outer wall and the drawbridge entrance to the Old Town – you will likely walk up and down these steps a few times as it’s also a area for upscale restaurants and the gateway to Fort Lovrijenac on the top of the hill!

Lovrijenac Fortress overlooking the Adriatic, one of the most iconic Dubrovnik Game of Thrones locations used as the Red Keep in King’s Landing

Fort Lovrijenac – (The Red Keep)

Fort Lovrijenac follows on from Pile Gate and some of the best scenes at The Red Keep including King Joffrey’s name day were actually filmed here, a worthwhile steep hike and one of my favourite lowkey sightseeing areas in Dubrovnik – although the actual structure of the fort was embellished somewhat for the show – we were shown the remarkable transformation!

Fort Lovrijenac is still a magnificent landmark and viewpoint in its own right and it offers one the best panoramas over Dubrovnik’s walls and ancient buildings (in my opinion), if you have already walked the walls the entry ticket also allows you to go inside the Fortress (it’s not big my any means, but worth a look!).

Jesuit Stairs (Walk of Shame)

Jesuit Stairs is probably the most well known and popular Game Of Thrones location, who can forget Cersi walk of shame, this iconic scene in the finale of Season 5 was filmed in the heart of the old town starting at beautiful Saint Ignatius (church) before walking down the Jesuit Staircase, you will recreate these steps – it’s actually one of the best attractions in Dubrovnik Old Town, although not everyone will know the strong filming link! (Yes, I stopped for an iced drink beforehand).

Rector’s Palace (Spice King’s mansion)

Do you remember Qarth? Well this Game of Thrones city was actually filmed in multiple locations within Dubrovnik Old Town, it takes an expert to point them out and tell you the behind-the-scenes gossip, which is where a private GOT tour guide comes in useful to bring it all to life and take your photos!

Katia did let slip that a scene that lasts just a few minutes could take days of filming – those poor extras had a lot of waiting around to do and one of those tricky Old Town filming locations include Rector’s Palace, a landmark in Dubrovnik Old Town, which played a part in the scenes where Daenerys meets the Spice King and asks for ships – I recommend going inside this beautiful building!

Minceta Tower (House of the Undying)

Minčeta Tower next to Ploce Gate was used as the House of the Undying where Daenerys is searching for her stolen dragons, you’ll have to access the old city walls to get to this exact spot! An easier filming location, where I am posing on the church steps below left is where a man speaks out against the Lannisters in front of a crowd of people – lots of visitors have their photo taken here, so you might have to hustle!

Tip! Ploce is actually one of the best areas to stay in Dubrovnik if you are looking to be situated somewhere upscale, but close to the action, it’s famous for luxury, views, overwater terraces and tranquillity – pop by Villa Argentina for a drink afterwards!

City Walls (King’s Landing walls)

Instantly recognisable as the King’s Landing walls – Dubrovnik’s magnificent city walls were a regular filming location in Game of Thrones and Bokar Fortress, especially with its cinematic-like backdrop (see above right), it is an epic filming location and impressive to see in person – the photo ops here are endless as you can see in my Dubrovnik Old Town guide! (The wall walk is a separate activity that you can easily do yourself at another time).

Group Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Tours Vs Private

Private Tours

A private tour is 100% worthwhile, no waiting around, you can linger at your favourite filming sites, pose and take as many photos as you want, and you’ll get all the juicy behind-the-scenes gossip first hand! Book a private tour (ask for Katia).

Group Tours

A small group tour is ideal for solo travellers or those who don’t mind sharing! Prices are from as little as €24 per person, and they are a great way to meet fellow Thrones fans who’ll add a bit more fun and enthusiasm! Book a group tour

Are Game of Thrones Dubrovnik Tours Worth It?

Yes, absolutely! While usually I like to walk around historic places and discover things by myself, I couldn’t imagine finding those exact filming locations of the Game of Thrones tour alone – especially not in 2 hours! If this is your aim, a tour is well worth it!

Our guide, Katia was a wonderful host and what made it extra special was her enthusiasm, the fact she worked on the film sets and knew the best photo spots, it saved a lot of time and effort and I was reminded of the wonderful backdrops and scenes played out in this epic series, trust me, its fool proof!

You can find some of the main locations like Jesuit Stairs yourself, but I definitely think it’s easier with a guide who shows you around and explains the scenes with a few personal anecdotes and film stills!

Practical Tips for a Dubrovnik Game of Thrones Tour

Book in Advance

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tours are super popular, especially in summer. Booking ahead guarantees your spot and often gets you better time slots (like early morning before the crowds). I booked with Get Your Guide for flexibility (cancel or change dates with 24 hour notice)!

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The Old Town and Fort Lovrijenac is full of steep stone steps and uneven cobbles – comfortable shoes are a must – you don’t want to end up slipping in King’s Landing.

Go Early or Late

The midday heat can be intense, and the streets get busy with cruise ship crowds. Early morning or late afternoon tours are cooler, calm and far more atmospheric.

Bring Water & Sun Protection

Dubrovnik Game of Thrones tours are outside, with little shade. Bring a refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat to stay comfortable while you explore.

Know Your Scenes

It helps if you refresh your memory of the episodes filmed in Dubrovnik before your tour. Guides will point them out, but it’s extra fun if you recognize the locations instantly!

Extend Your Day

Many Game of Thrones tours start early in the morning, afterwards, I highly recommend lunching in the old town and then taking a half-day boat trip to maximise your day – check out my detailed guide to the best boat tours from Dubrovnik!
