Hvar is one of the most popular Islands in Croatia, certainly the most glamorous, but what really draws the visitors is the stunning natural landscape and beaches on Hvar Island!

Whenever I’ve visited Hvar, I always include extra days to spend time on the smaller postcard-perfect Pakleni Islands, beach coves, and inlets – Hvar’s clear blue seas and sunshine make a few hours on the beach a must!

After weeks of incredible (self-imposed) research, I’ve put together this guide to the best beaches on Hvar Island Croatia, from my favourite hidden gems to popular coves and beach clubs and how to get there!

So if visiting the best beaches in Hvar Island is on your radar, here’s my top picks and insider tips you don’t want to miss!

THE BEST BEACHES ON HVAR ISLAND CROATIA

Exploring the best beaches on Hvar Island and nearby Pakleni Islands, by exciting boat trip, is truly one of the most popular things to do on Hvar, and many of the stunning beach coves are easily reachable from Hvar Town! Below, I’ve listed the best Hvar beaches in each location on the island – let’s dive in!

BEST HVAR BEACHES NEAR HVAR TOWN

Pokonji Dol Beach

Pokonji Dol Beach is one of the largest and most postcard-perfect best beaches near Hvar Town, it’s a good place to start your beach-hopping adventures!

I love the nature-filled 25-minute walk to this beach from Hvar Town, where you’ll follow the path that skirts around the coast, you really can’t go wrong! Once there, you’ll be met by inviting blue shallow waters and a soft pebble beach, surrounded by pine trees; it’s very beautiful!

Pokonji Dol Beach is one of the most relaxed and surprisingly crowd-free Hvar beaches near Hvar Town that I experienced. There are also a few sunbeds for hire and two traditional restaurants on either side of the beach!

Getting here: 25-minute coastal walk from Hvar Town.

Facilities: 2 restaurants, sunbeds and umbrellas for rent.

Robinson’s Beach

Another 15-minute walk along the coastal trail from Pokonji Dol takes you to Robinson’s Beach, but first you pass through the nudist beach; Strand Mekićevica.

You can stop there if you don’t mind getting your kit off! It is actually a lovely beach and very sparsely populated except for a couple of naked Croatian seniors. But what I love about Robinson’s is even though the beach is smaller, it is picturesque with island views and has a great family-run restaurant, plus there are sunbeds for hire and a little garden with hammocks to relax!

Robinson’s Beach is in the full sun, but you can easily find shade amongst the pine trees and rock pools, my top tip because it’s so small is to go very early to claim your spot and avoid the midday sun!

P.S Bring cash for the restaurant and wear trainers for the walk!

Getting here: 45-minute walk from Hvar Town or water taxi (peak summer months only)!

Facilities: Restaurant, sunbeds, hammocks!

Bonj Beach Hvar

Bonje Beach and Beach Club Hvar is my favourite lounging spot, situated next to Hvar Town, it’s perfect for those looking to elevate their beach day with a touch of luxury!

Hvar Town is known for glamour and luxury, and Beach Club Hvar certainly has this element, from the overwater beach cabanas to the dreamy coastal decor and incredible Mediterranean restaurant – I’ve spent entire days here enjoying all the facilities.

Beach Club Hvar is ideal if you have a hotel in Hvar Town, as it’s just a ten-minute stroll away, next to the Amfora Hotel and smaller pebble beaches. Don’t miss this lovely beach in Hvar, I recommend reserving a sunbed or cabana online – and make a full day of it!

Getting here: 10-minute walk from Hvar Town square.

Facilities: Top restaurant, large bar and lounge, sunbeds, cabanas, beach huts.

Must Do! Reserve your sunbed in advance!

HIDDEN BEACH GEMS IN SOUTH HVAR

Dubovica Beach

Dubovica is the most idyllic-looking beach on Hvar Island! You’ll find a pebbly cove with a pine forest backdrop, flanked by a few traditional orange stone houses. It’s far away from the towns, which makes it a gem among the South Hvar Beaches!

For this beach on Hvar, you need towels and there aren’t any sunbed facilities, only a traditional restaurant (which gets mixed reviews) and a bar called Duba that has shade – I’d chill here if you don’t want full sun!

I actually preferred the experience of this beautiful beach on a beach boat hopping trip I went on, which covered the South Hvar beaches, including Zarace and jaw-dropping scenery! You explore so much more in one day without the hassle of navigating – or the walk down the steep rocky path to get to the beach!

Book our South Hvar Beaches private boat trip for the beautiful landscapes and visiting remote beaches on Hvar without the fuss, heat and wasps!

Getting there: car, ATV or private boat

Facilities: Bar & restaurant

Note: It can get busy in the peak summer months with local families.

Jagodna Beach

Jagodna Beach is a local insider tip brought to us by quizzing our kind receptionist at Beach Bay Hvar Hotel, and it lived up to the hype! It’s a lovely, tranquil spot, a tiny hidden gem that not many people know about!

It was, however, not super easy to find, but once there, you are treated to a small strip of actual sand, glistening turquoise sea and dramatic orange cliffs; it’s very tranquil and tourist-free! I’m not sure if it’s the best beach in Hvar, but it’s certainly attractive!

I recommend going mid-morning due to the intense sun and cliffs, which block out the sun for the morning and later from 5pm. To be honest, it’s the sort of beach to stop for a dip rather than a full day!

Must haves: An umbrella, towels, water and SPF50!

Getting here: By car, ATV or private boat

Lucisca Bay

Another beach our receptionist tipped us about was Lucisca Bay, on the photos the bay looked beautiful; it’s a shame that the beach is notoriously tricky to get to due to rugged terrain!

You’ll need a ATV, or a hire boat to get to this beach on Hvar Island comfortably. To be honest, it is a better experience and more cost-effective to hire a speed boat like we did to reach the hidden gems and best beaches on Hvar Island.

Getting here: Private speedboat (best for finding hidden beaches on Hvar Island!) or hire an ATV!

NORTH SHORE BEACHES & STARI GRAD

Maslinica Bay

A lovely secluded beach in Hvar for those staying in or next to the little village of Vbroska! Maslinica Bay is a great little spot for nature and walking along the beach trails, until you find your perfect place!

The beach itself is made up of smooth stone slabs rather than sand or pebbles, probably not the most comfortable or attractive as some of the other’s I’ve seen, but if your in Vbroska it does the job – and you can pop back to the town for lunch as there are no facilities at all, which is the norm for many of the beaches on Hvar Island!

Getting here: Car or short taxi from Vbroska

Zaraće Beach

Marlo Zarace Beach is another hidden gem away from infrasturcture and tourism, although it is not too far from Stari Grad, if you come to this beach you will likely have it all to yourselves!

The main reason for visiting this beach on Hvar is the gorgeous natural landscape, it’s hard to beat, I’ve swam here only once and we arrived via a small private boat, but the memory has stayed with me, the colour of the water is unreal!

Getting here: By car, there is a car park and stairs, ATV or small private boat!

Oslic Beach

If you’re staying in Stari Grad the closest beach to you for a quick swim and sunbath is Oslic Beach, while it’s certainly not the best beach on Hvar Island, it is the closest to the town of Stari Grad.

Oslic Beach is similar to many Croatian beaches, which are mostly rocks, concrete and a small stretch of ‘sand’ – it gets busy as the day goes on, so I recommend arriving early and bringing everything you need with you because there aren’t any facilities nearby.

Getting here: quick taxi or car ride

BEST BEACHES ON HVAR PAKLENI ISLANDS

Palmizana Beach

Palmizana beach cove is situated on one of the largest Pakleni Island; Sveti Klement, just a 15-minute taxi boat ride away from Hvar Town. It boasts a beautiful view, a small pebble beach and top quality restaurants with overwater terraces – the Mediterranean dream beach!

There are sunbeds for hire at Zori and Laganini. If you arrive early enough, I can personally recommend Zori for its excellent service, stunning sea views, and delicious tuna. I discovered it on an incredible 5 Islands boat trip from Hvar!

Palmizana is a popular lunch stop in the Pakleni Islands for small boats, I recommend reserving ahead if this is in your itinerary, otherwise, just enjoy the beach and view from this glam island!

Getting here: Taxi boats from Hvar Town or private boat hire/tour

Facilities: 3-4 up-market restaurants, barefoot luxury beach club, DJ & sunbeds & cabanas.

Tip! Many of the top-rated boat tours from Hvar Town include Palmizana as a stop. I recommend this small-group Pakleni boat tour (5-star rated with swim stops and snacks!).

Mlini Beach

Mlini Beach is another wonderful laid-back beach in the Paklinski Islands (Marinkovak Island), it’s my favourite for relaxing and swimming in the crystal clear shallow waters!

At Mlini Beach you’ll find two spots, one where you’ll be dropped off almost in front of the best beach bar and restaurant – Mamato and another just along the path through the trees, which is a wonderful area and free of boats, so the water is even clearer!

I recommend arriving early to grab a sunbed as the pebbles are not comfortable to lie on here – a lot of the small and scenic Pakleni Islands are made up of rockpools, shallow bays and various sizes of stones!

Getting here: Book a boat taxi from Hvar Town or join a Pakleni Islands beach hopping tour that stops at hidden coves like this one!

Facilities: 2-3 restaurants, bar, sunbeds and cabanas

Note: Infamous Carpe Diem Beach Hvar, a large vibrant beach club is situated on the other side of Marinkovak Island!

Jerolim Island

Jerolim is known for its naturist-friendly beaches and boho vibes – it’s one of the most famous FKK beaches in the world, so it needs a mention in case this is your vibe!

At this beach, you can expect rugged paths, pristine sea, and a bar-restaurant tucked into the trees – that welcomes naturists. It’s an easy, tranquil escape from Hvar’s buzz as it doesn’t get tonnes of visitors, so you can always find a relaxing spot to throw your towel – with or without shade or clothes!

Getting here: Rent a private boat or water taxi

Facilities: Restaurant

Plan Your Visit To The Pakleni Islands!

The easiest and most scenic way to explore the Pakleni Islands is by boat. Whether you join a small-group tour or hire your own for the day, you’ll be treated to hidden coves, swim spots, and views that are truly the Mediterranean dream!

BEST BEACH CLUBS ON HVAR ISLAND

If you’re looking to swap pebbles for plush daybeds and cocktails by the sea, Hvar delivers! Here are the island’s most stylish beach clubs – where the views and beach bars come together!

Beach Club Hvar

Beach Club Hvar is the most stylish and sophisticated spot – and it’s just a 15-minute stroll away from Hvar Town! You can’t miss the blue and white luxurious decor, over-water restaurant and sunbeds, it’s a beautiful location right on the waterfront – this is where I go to spoil myself, I highly recommend reserving online!

Falko Beach Bar

Falko is a low-key, breezy-white beach club with a lovely ambience along the waters edge, a 30-40 minute coastal walk from Hvar Town. It’s my go-to place for a sunset cocktail or even to spend the day on a sunbed just inches from the blue sea! You’ll love the laid-back vibe here – just be sure to arrive early to snag a sunbed inches from the water (there’s no reservations here)!

Laganini Beach Club

Laganini is on Palmizanna in the Pakleni Islands, a vibrant high-end boho beach club; dreamy white wood, shallow water, cool Balearic beats, tree canopies and a waterfront restaurant. Sunbeds are available, but must be booked in advance. It’s a busy place and the priciest out of the bunch, but the aesthetics are wonderful! You can easily stop here for lunch on your beach-hopping boat trip!

Carpe Diem Beach Club

Carpe Diem beach Hvar makes up a huge part of Marinkovac Island in the small Pakleni island group. It’s famous for being the largest and most vibrant beach club in Hvar, featuring a dance floor and DJs. During the day, you can relax on the sun loungers and sofas, then it livens up at sunset until midnight!

How to get around Hvar?

If you’re wondering how to visit the best beaches in Hvar, there are a few stylish and easy ways to explore the island at your own pace.

Coastal Walk

If you’re staying in Hvar Town, you can easily reach a handful of beaches by walking along the coastal path in either direction towards Beach Club Hvar or Robinsons Beach, where you’ll walk through many pebbled beaches.

Rent A Car

For beach hopping or hidden gem beaches on Hvar Island, renting a car is a great option, especially if you’re heading to beaches like Dubovica, Zarace, or Jagodna.

Hire A Boat

Hvar is made for boat trips! You can rent a private boat to explore the Pakleni Islands and other coastal gems, for me, its the BEST way of getting around!

I highly recommend you rent a private boat with a skipper for a luxurious day at sea. It’s the most scenic way to discover Hvar’s secret beaches and famous Red Rocks – you can swim anywhere!

Rent a private boat here!

Rent An ATV

Renting an ATV is better than a car to reach the more rugged and remote beaches, such as Lucisca Bay – there are lots of dirt roads to navigate and an ATV is the only way to drive safely!

Rent an ATV here!

Taxi & Transfers

Taxis are available around Hvar Town and Stari Grad, though they can be pricey. But for quick trips between beaches and towns, they’re convenient – just agree on a (return) price first – note most won’t drive to the remote beaches due to the terrain.

When is the best time to visit Hvar beaches?

The best overall time to visit Hvar beaches and the islands are the shoulder months mid-May – June and mid-September.

The days will be warm and sunny, but with few crowds the island and beaches of Hvar will be quieter and much more pleasant to visit, especially the beaches closer to Hvar town!

INSIDER TIPS FOR VISITING HVAR BEACHES

When To Go

I recommend visiting the best beach in Hvar Town or nearby early in the morning, by mid-day, they can be busy with day-trippers and very hot! If you want to catch a lovely sunset the late afternoon on the south beaches of Hvar is a nice time to visit.

You can head to the hidden gem beaches on Hvar Island at almost any time of day, depending on your preference, as they are mostly tranquil, but in the afternoon, the sea turns from shimmering to a deep turquoise blue, not to be missed!

Access To Beaches

Hvar has a rugged terrain, it’s mountainous with windy roads and unforgiving dirt tracks down towards many of the beaches, which makes accessing them by car very difficult!

If you are exploring the desirable southern beaches on Hvar, I highly recommend that you book an ATV, this is the only way to access them! You’ll also be walking down and up big hills – this needs to be factored in when making your beach day itineraries!

For the ultimate Hvar beach day, hop on this top-rated speedboat tour that takes you to Zarace, Dubovica, and the stunningly secluded Lucisca Bay. You’ll also stop at the dramatic Red Rocks, a hidden coastal gem that’s only accessible by boat!

What To Expect

If you haven’t been to Croatia before, you might be expecting the usual white sand beaches of the Mediterranean, but unfortunately, the beaches on Hvar Island (and in Croatia) are somewhat different; they mostly consist of pebbles, rock pools and man-made concrete with sunbeds balanced on top!

(The pebbles and lack of sand is the reason why the water in Croatia is crystal clear in the first place, no debris clouding the sea colour!)

It doesn’t take away from the beautiful scenery, clear turquoise sea and natural beach coves, but it does mean you’ll need to prep for it!

What To Bring

For a day out on the beaches of Hvar, it pays to prep your beach bag – more than usual, think light, stylish and sun-ready!

Must-Haves:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen – The sun is strong, bring your SPF30-50!
  • Towel or travel towel – Thick, quick-dry options are perfect for pebbles & boats.
  • Water shoes – Great for pebbly coves and slippery boat steps.
  • Dry bag – Essential for keeping your phone and valuables safe on boats.
  • Reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated – I take this water bottle everywhere.
  • Sunglasses & hat – For shade while sailing or lounging on the beach, sunglasses are an essential!

THE BEST BEACHES IN HVAR: FINAL THOUGHTS

That wraps up my guide to the best beaches on Hvar Island!

From secluded coves with crystal-clear water to stylish beach clubs, Hvar’s beaches offer crystal clear waters and lovely landscapes that promise a wonderful day on the island!
