Looking for the best restaurants in Hvar Croatia? Here’s your guide to the island’s top dining experiences!

As a seasoned traveller to Hvar Island, I’ve found some incredible spots to eat and drink, including candle-lit terraces in the charming old towns and Mediterranean lunches with gorgeous sea views in the Pakleni Islands, where you can truly relax in beautiful surroundings.

I’m excited to spill the island’s secrets, so you can save time by-passing the usual tourist trap restaurants and mediocre places and have a more worthwhile experience – one that you’ll remember!

So, here’s your guide to the best restaurants in Hvar, Croatia, from fine dining to atmospheric rooftop terraces and charming taverns, they all offer something special, it’s one of the reasons why Hvar is so popular!

What To Expect – Dining In Hvar?

Dining in one of the best Hvar restaurants is a highlight of visiting the island. You can expect an elevated experience, with beautiful settings, Mediterranean sea views and charming cobbled lanes – it’s a feast for all the senses!

You’ll find everything from chic waterfront eateries with fine wines and tasting menus to authentic konobas tucked into old town lanes serving Dalmatian classics. Portions are generous, the pace is relaxed (unless you are dining in a prime spot in the peak season), and the atmosphere extends well into the night!

Expect Mediterranean flavours with a Croatian twist, paired with local wines from Hvar’s vineyards. In fact, if you truly want to experience the island’s wine culture, consider booking a wine tasting tour in Hvar — the perfect addition to your culinary journey!

BEST RESTAURANTS IN HVAR TOWN

Hvar Town is bursting with incredible dining spots – from chic waterfront eateries serving freshly caught seafood to tucked-away courtyards where traditional Dalmatian dishes and intimate settings take centre stage, it’s a good spot to stay and have all of these things in walking distance!

Many visitors spend their days island-hopping, exploring the best Hvar boat tours, then return to town in time for a relaxed dinner overlooking the harbour, just a short stroll away. It’s the perfect way to end an adventurous day!

DALMANTINO

Dalmantino is the first restaurant I visited in Hvar Town, recommended to me by an Airbnb host long ago and it’s still one of my favourite restaurants in Hvar today. It’s popular for good reason, this well-established restaurant serves tasty and quality dishes within a relaxed environment and the service is very welcoming.

I always order one of the gnocchi dishes or the tuna steak with freshly grilled veg and broad bean puree with a local glass of white wine. You can happily turn up for lunch without reservations (the old town is generally quiet in the daytime), but for evening meals I recommend going early as this particular location can be a busy thoroughfare later on!

RESTAURANT PARK HVAR

Restaurant Park Hvar is one of the best restaurants in Hvar Croatia, it belongs to the hotel of the same name, but don’t let a hotel restaurant put you off! Park Hvar has the most beautiful flower-filled terrace overlooking the harbour. It’s very photogenic with plenty of ambience and is popular with weddings – so you know this place is also great for romantic couples!

The menu is similar to many of the restaurants – Mediterranean-Dalmatian fusion, but the setting is one of the best – I recommend booking a table just before sunset. You’ll want to catch the nice glow over the harbour and there’s an amazing jazz bar right below – it also belongs to the fabulous Heritage Park Hvar Hotel.

MEDITARRANEO

A highly rated family-run restaurant for over 70 years, Mediterraneo is widely known as one of the best Hvar restaurants and there’s no wonder with fresh local ingredients, an intimate courtyard setting and complimentary’s to create the best possible experience.

Mediterraneo is one of Hvar’s best-kept secrets, specialising in tasting plates and fresh and flavourful mains (too many ingredients to list here), but they do one of the best seafood risottos that I’ve had in Hvar. You’ll definitely want to reserve in advance for Michelin star Meditarraneo!

GIAXA

Another sought-after restaurant in Hvar Town, Giaxa is situated across a cobbled lane in the heart of the old town and housed within a fifteenth-century Gothic Palace, and honestly the setting and ambiance is as stunning as the food!

It’s perfect for evening dining with the romantic twinkly lights and charming terrace, the menu is more varied than some of the other restaurants in Hvar. For example, you can order the signature dish; rockfish with pan-fried mango, cherry tomatoes, thyme, and vegetable cream, which sounds delicious!

FIG HVAR

Fig Hvar is a must-visit lunch spot in Hvar Town, situated down an attractive 16th-century cobbled lane in a peaceful area away from the main and busy areas of the town!

While Fig is the most fun and casual restaurant on this list of best Hvar restaurants, it also offers a menu that’s totally refreshing! You’ll see tasty salads and flatbreads (try the fig and ricotta, it’s super moorish!!) in place of the usual fish and seafood dishes – I love it and visit often, it’s nice and friendly with a relaxed atmosphere.

For me this is more of a daytime place, but if you do venture here in the evening, booking is essential; Fig is casual, but the creative menu, friendly service and ambience make it extremely popular – the reviews speak for themselves!

BLACK PEPPER

Black Pepper is a well-known restaurant charmingly located across one of the stone lanes above the main town square and it still feels like a hidden gem as it doesn’t get overly busy!

It’s one of my favourite evening meal places in Hvar Town and you can even catch a good sunset here over the harbour at the bottom of the bougainvillaea-draped stairs, which is shared with the Park Hvar Hotel (see above). I love the atmosphere and attentive service; it’s a quality option.

Reserve your spot in advance, especially during the peak season and ask the on-hand sommelier to pick out a fabulous wine to go along with your Mediterranean-Dalmatian meal.

GARIFUL

Gariful is a classy restaurant with a beautiful view over the Riviera, best known for serving high-quality seafood on one of the most elegant terraces in Hvar. It has ALL the frills, including the odd celeb spot, but it’s not all showy, it’s the place to go for oysters, scallops and fresh pasta gnocchi!

I highly recommend booking ahead at this exclusive fish restaurant, especially if you’re hoping to snag a table on the outdoor terrace (which is half the reason for going) – it’s one of the best sea-view restaurants in Hvar Town. Lunch or sunset are perfect times to wine and dine at Gariful!

PARADISE GARDEN

Paradise Garden Hvar is one of the newer restaurants in Hvar Town and it already has a buzz about it! If I were staying in Hvar, I’d definitely be checking out – if not for the ‘paradise garden’ alone, it’s so stylish!

Split across two sitting areas, including an open-air rooftop terrace with views, Paradise Garden Hvar is quickly becoming one of the best restaurants in Hvar Town, if you know where to find it!

Serving both Mediterranean and Croatian, the recommendations include crab and guacamole starter or burrata and tuna steak – the cocktails are fancy as well!

SAN MARCO

San Marco is the restaurant of Hvar Town’s exclusive hotel Palace Elizabeth and as you’d expect for such a location, the service and quality food is fine-dining levels.

You’ll definitely need to reserve in advance for this one, not only is it one of the best restaurants in Hvar, but also in Croatia, even stepping inside the hotel, you can feel the elegance!

Overlooking the lively main square, this spot serves elevated Mediterranean dishes in a calm, refined setting – perfect if you’re in the mood for a slower-paced, more sophisticated dining experience in Hvar.

BEST RESTAURANTS BEYOND HVAR TOWN

BEST RESTAURANTS IN HVAR – STARI GRAD

Stari Grad is a charming heritage town and the oldest in Croatia, known for its laid-back, tranquil atmosphere and authentic settings. I love taking day trips to Stari Grad, it’s just 25 minutes from Hvar Town and is lovely to walk around and eat a delicious lunch!

ANTIKA

Antika in Stari Grad is one of the best restaurants in Hvar Croatia, offering traditional Dalmatian dishes and Mediterranean classics with an inviting ambiance.

The setting of this restaurant really stands out, it features a charming terrace with scattered tables and chairs across a cobbled lane – I was lucky enough to get a table outside at lunchtime as they were mostly reserved, so this is your reminder to book in advance!

Everything was delicious from the sharing boards, and homemade focaccia to the fresh pasta (we sharded that as well), the location, food and atmosphere make Antika a memorable experience!

TERRA RESTAURANT

Terra Restaurant is the place to go for an upscale meal in serene surroundings, its a lovely spot located at the luxurious Maslina Resort Stari Grad.

The menu focuses on quality seasonal ingredients, some of the standout mains include truffle and porcini risotto, ribeye and grilled white fish fillet. You’ll be dining on an elegant terrace overlooking the pool surrounded by sea views and tropical gardens, so make sure to pick a time in the daylight to enjoy it all.

It would be perfect for a special occasion, this restaurant and hotel is fabulous, it’s one I recommend in my Stari Grad Guide!

BEST RESTAURANTS IN HVAR – PAKLENI ISLANDS

The Pakleni islands offer beach clubs and fancy waterfront dining; it’s worth hopping across on a boat from Hvar Town to eat in the best and most serene Mediterranean restaurants and explore more of the dreamy Pakleni Islands – the best attraction in the area!

ZORI – PALMIZANNA

Zori on Palmizanna is among one of the best restaurants in Hvar with a view, offering a range of Mediterranean terraces within the centre of the bay where every chair boasts a beautiful sea view!

The lush tropical setting and relaxed terrace creates an unbeatable atmosphere. I love this spot for lunch as the menu is fresh and light, I thought the Tuna steak was particularly good and well-presented and you are not at all rushed!

LAGANINI – PALMIZANA

Laganini is one of the better-known upscale seafood restaurants on Palmizana Island, and while it definitely caters to the jet-set summer crowd, it still manages to impress with its modern Mediterranean menu and gorgeous, tucked-away terrace with stunning sea views.

I ordered the ceviche and it was super fresh and well presented. The service, however, was a little too efficient as there are quick table turn-overs at busy or ‘peak’ times. You’ll want to plan ahead for this one, as both the restaurant and lively boho luxe beach club are very popular in the height of summer!

MAMATO – MLINI BAY

There are many reasons to visit the Pakleni Islands from Hvar Town and Mamato Restaurant is one of them! Located right on the beach in the picturesque bay of Mlini with island views and a nice chill vibe, this restaurant is a favourite for tasty dishes and welcoming staff.

It offers tables that are set back among the trees with picturesque waterfront views. It’s stylish and relaxed – you can definitely linger here and enjoy your pasta, salad, sharing boards and more!

You can even arrive in style on one of these Hvar boat tours – this is how I came across it, our guide stopped here for lunch, honestly, this boat tour was hands down the best thing we did in Hvar!

TERACA BAR

Start your evening high above the harbour at one of Hvar’s chic rooftop bars! Teraca Bar is a tranquil newcomer above St Stephens Square, a prime position with panoramic views of the Hvar Fortress and the Adriatic, it’s the perfect spot for a pre-dinner aperitif or a sunset cocktail.

BACKLANE CRAFT BAR

Nestled along the most charming cobbled street in Hvar Town, Back Lane Bar is a gem with a relaxed atmosphere – welcoming tourists and locals alike! The botanical cocktails here are the tastiest in town – I highly recommend visiting this spot!

TIPS FOR DINING IN HVAR!

Book Ahead In Summer

Hvar’s restaurants fill up fast in July and August – especially the waterfront spots and top restaurants in the old town. If there’s a place you’ve been thinking about, make a reservation a few days in advance.

Eat Like The Locals

Don’t be afraid to skip the tourist menus and try Dalmatian classics like pasticada (slow-cooked beef stew) or gregada (a fisherman’s fish stew). Pair it with a glass of local Plavac Mali wine for the full experience.

Time Your Meals

Locals often dine later in the evening, so if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, aim for an earlier sitting around 6:30–7:00 pm, which is actually my preferred time!

Try More Than One Spot

Hvar is small enough to enjoy appetisers, tapas and wine in one restaurant, mains in another, and dessert wine somewhere else. A delicious mini food crawl among the best Hvar restaurants!

Bring Cash (Just Incase)

Most restaurants take cards, but smaller, family-run taverns (konobas) sometimes prefer cash.

BEST HVAR RESTAURANTS FAQ

Are Hvar restaurants open throughout the year?

No, many restaurants in Hvar will be closed from October until the following May, Hvar Island is very much a seasonal summer destination. July and August are the busiest times to visit, May to early June and the end of September are considered the best months to stay. You can even visit one of the best restaurants in Hvar without a reservation!

What food is Hvar known for?

Hvar is most known for its diverse cuisine of Mediterranean and Italian influences alongside traditional Dalmatian dishes. Seafood and freshly caught fish, tuna and squid in particular and stews like peka (meat and vegetables) – along with wine straight from Hvar’s vineyards!

Fish Tip! Ask the waiter how your fish is going to be presented!! I recommend the filet if you’re going for white fish or ordering tuna, which is usually excellent; otherwise, you’ll likely get the whole fish on your plate with bones, head the lot!

Are restaurants in Hvar expensive?

Yes! Hvar is similar to Dubrovnik for top and popular restaurants; prices are high, especially now with the Euro adding to the costs. I’ve noticed a huge spike in price on the menus in recent years – you can expect €35-40 for a meat or fish main in fancy places, but there are some quality mid-range options too!

Where to eat in Hvar Old Town?

If you just want to eat somewhere nice and atmospheric, Mediterraneo or Black Pepper are in my opinion the best restaurants in Hvar Old Town, they are hard to beat! The authenticity, locations, service and ambience really stand out!
